" Where did everyone get thier Nicks? "
We've just had this topic over at TOS (http://www.theoverclockingstore.co.uk) , and I wondered about you lot over here.

Mine was a character in what has to be my fav book of all time, Firedrake by R.A.Knaak. After that its stuck with me ever since, Ive used it everywhere, no-one else seems to have read the book which helps.

werewolf
5th February 2001, 22:32
An old AOL screeen name (from when i was in their 0800 net trials july 99 to june 2000 when i got cable).
Started as a joke because i was always on late night and someone made a quip about me being a vampire, i replied with nope i'm a werewolf;)

SmartMonkey
5th February 2001, 23:30
I was playing very badly one day(about nov 99), and I thought I was playing like a dumb human. I then thought that SmartMonkey was a better way of putting it, changed my name and it stuck!

Renegade

Anyone ever play Sensible world of soccer? well thats where i got my name back in 93, 94 something like that and the creators were called Renegade Software so i used it for doom :)

Zenith
6th February 2001, 03:54
Mine's pretty easy to guess as well.

Zenith was a character in the magazine 2000AD about 10-12 years ago. He was a teenage rockstar superhero with an attitude problem.

When I got my Commodore Amiga 500 in 1989, I wanted a nick to put in the games. Golden rule of nicknames... for it to be noticed, it need a Q, X or Z in it.

far too cheesey for its own good

Strych
6th February 2001, 12:51
Well, my original chatting nick was candicebforeal, which was on an advert as a spoof credit card or saaaaing, but it was too girly a name, and I desperately want to hang out in the unspeakably k3wl  yahoo! hackers lounge :o :o so I had to change it to summat evil and hackerish sounding. I happened to go to college that day, only to learn about neurotransmitter agonists (thats nerve poisions n stuff) and strychnine was one that came up. Thinking it sounded suitably menacing, yet the "nene" adding a femenine edge, I adopted my new 3r33t hax0r name as "Strychnine_0000" which I changed to Mysstryss Strychnine for gaming, which, due to people hating typing it in IRC has been shortened to my now preferred version of Strych. :D

I also found out a few weeks ago that Strych ist he Polish word for attic

hehehe, one thing i did read in a book by Tom Clancy the other day as a "Wizzo" is the US Navy term for the navigator in a aircraft.

Wizzo
6th February 2001, 22:27
Spot on Cabe. I obtained the nick Wizzo at one of my very first LANs (way back in 1995) for EF2000 keyboard 0wnage. :)

Took mine from a term used in philosophy. means "Art or Technical Skill", two things I don't have :) I'm also know as CRAP_GA_Newbie when lpaying badly (Prize for whoever can tell me why), and Zaitsev in DoD (read Stalingrad).

WhiteKnight
10th February 2001, 21:12
Well ive changed mine a few times.

I cant remember what my first one was, but one of them was "Cornholio" from the Beavis and Butthead movie.. when they are in the whitehouse (do you have a Teepee for my bunghole?).

But my current one came from an old Quake skin.
I had a great quake charackter skin that was a Knight with a sword and everything, so i kept the name.

Craigath
11th February 2001, 10:58
Mine comes from the Pern Chronicles series of books.

Cant actually remember if there was a Dragon with my name or if i just made it up. (dragon names all end in th between 6 and 10 chars or somthing) Way too long ago to think about it. ever scince i started online gaming.

I used to have another when i first went online but that was soon changed. But i cant remember that either :E

What about smaug out of The Hobbit? Ahhhh.

My name was given to me from work friends because I used to always mess with their PC's

Jazza
12th February 2001, 13:10
Mine from back in the early days of C+VG. When the Editor was Juilian Rignall, and his nick was JAZ, which I used on all my high scores :) Later he changed it to Jazza, and so did I. And the rest is history ;)

Say_Ten
12th February 2001, 14:09
I originally joined the internet with "Me" but got bored with that and decided to get something else. After throwing things around with my brother for a about 1/2 an hour I got bored and thought I'd go with the cheesy and blatant "Satan" answer. However he threw "Say_Ten" at me and I've used it for years.

zhardoum
12th February 2001, 17:52
well I bet your all dying for mine..

I got my nick, not from Babylon 5, but infact from..

Starcraft...

One of the characters at one point when given an order says something like z - har- doom, which i mispelt the first time i used it, and since no one ever ever has used this name on a notice board, i never get problems remembering my username :)

bet you didn't guess that now did you..

I have thought of changing it often, but it is nice being one in a crowd, and like i said, makes signing into arenas dead easy..

Joey[kins]
12th February 2001, 19:16
Well I got the nick FearHawk from the fact that I have near perfect eyesight and can see things from a long way off, and the fact that some of my teachers wereafraid of me cos they thought I was "unstable". Someone just called me The Fear Hawk and it stuck. Again, I've never had a problem signing up to a message board. My nick before was NetSleaze, on account that in one month I random chatted 305 girls over ICQ and got either one numbers or addresses.

AH, you were the 'odd' kid who sat in the corner and didn't get bullied since everyone thought he might stab someone, probably himself :D

Joey[kins]
12th February 2001, 20:50
Oh no - I was generally loud and mental, but I could strike fear with my fake violent mood swings... having the staff think you're bordering on psychotic can be a great advantage when it comes to not handing homework in :p

Cabe

failing that actually being able to so serious damage to a techer is a good one, especially if they've seen you walking down the street with your Kung Fu gear.

afty
13th February 2001, 09:52
I was using the name Russdy a long time ago as I had no originality, but as everyone else seemed to have an alter ego (despite the fact I'm still a facetious, loud and straight speaking twat online as well as offline), I decided to grab myself a name very different from that in real life.

For my place of world domination to succeed it had to be instantly memorable, alphabetically prominent, phoenetically simple and also unique or as close to it as possible.
Hence : Afty

The upshot of having a short and catchy nickname that is not based around words from the following common libraries used to build names :
[]Gods (Zeus)
[]Violence (MastahKilla)
[]Animals (FearHawk)
[]Pshychology (FearHawk)
[]Chemistry / Physics (Strych)
[]Military characters / positions (Wizzo / Ding Chavez)
--- Is that people can use withut pissing themselves with laughter. (spose Wiz aint too bad). The downside is that Afty is so non-descript and so useable that everyone involved in computing that I know calls me Afty more often than Russ, which I wouldnt mind except for when they go introducing me to women as "My mate Afty..."

SquireMuldoon
13th February 2001, 22:07
Soooo.... Wizzos..... are them the ones that shoot down friendlies? :D

/me quickly runs for cover

So far I've found my name to be very unique. I've found people never forget it. Same thing can be said for my real name.... hmmm, a pattern seems to be emerging. I guess an encounter with me tends to leave an impression. :D

As to where it came from, well if you must know.... its from a single episode of RugRats where the dog runs away and gets picked up by a rare dog breeder renaming him Squire Muldoon the 3rd. It sounded kewl, so I nicked it :)

My Nick stands for the most common error message i get on my computer...

Un Able To Establish Connection...

Strych
23rd February 2001, 14:06
Strych tends to be quite memorable. After having to learn how to spell it, it kinda sticks. (All I need now is for people to learn how to pronounce it)

I agree with afty that being named after a poison is a bit clichéd/predicatble/naff, but bear in mind that I chose this nick when I thought yahoo! was the height of kewlness *cough* which is why I tend to stick to the more non-descript "Strych" nowadays

Chainsaw
23rd February 2001, 15:19
My name isnt that exciting, just came up with it went going for a game of lan Doom one day. Having just seen the running man, I thought of buzzsaw, but thought Chainsaw was better.

But its no where near as memorable or exciting as my real name.... anyone care to guess? (and its probably that one you've laughed about many times)

Messy
23rd February 2001, 16:23
Messy Corpse...is some sort of radley(college) saying...i never went there but i met a guy from radley...and the first thing he said to me was omg dude u look like a Messy Corpse...many connotations and meanings....i was thinking of names for myself one day to replace the frankly quite camp Lunar...so i chose Messy Corspe :D and there we are...

Phiebs
24th February 2001, 11:05
Well - when I was first introduced to th internet I thought that I was pretty good at Quake and I was also pretty quick. Now I thought that a Fibre Optic line was quick, so my name evolved into Phieber Optix. Then It got shorter and shorter until it became Phiebs.
Don't ask why?!?!?!

GameGuru
1st March 2001, 21:27
Hmm, I think my nickname just arrived through irony, being that I'm crap at most games I play :D

Groodles
1st March 2001, 21:55
"Groodles" is the real-life nickname I've had since the age of about 10 (Awwwwww, bless :)). Very few of my real-life friends actually address me by my first name as I've known am all for donkey's years.

It's individual, and I've not seen another one on the net since I registered my hotmail account with that nick back in '95.

EARTHWALKER
4th March 2001, 11:20
I won it in a poker game. I was playing in the Wireplay Poker laddfer and it was for the top spot. I won but the guy offered his name to me if I marked it down as him winning..haha
What the hell EARTHWALKER is better than what I had before so I made a slight mistake in the submission card :)

GameGuru

This is turning into a better thread than over in TOS, weve got 870 odd nickname's to get a story from :)

EasyKill
5th March 2001, 15:17
Back in the dark ages on MUD's I use to use the nick BioHazard.

After skipping the whole Doom/Quake online thing, I rather quickly found that there were a lot of Biohazards (or variations) playing Unreal online.

Seeing as I SUCKED, I changed the name to EasyKill, because I was an ...

For some reason I've never run into someone else using the same name.

Was planning to change it once I improved, but I kind of like it now. Besides, the game play hasn't improved. :-)

I stand for that name :p

Got the nick Doc from school after a slight problem with being a bit ahead of myself. We were going thru this test paper and got onto one of those rock hard ones. So after the teacher explained it all she said "now what is the answer then?" and I, thinking we were on the next question of which the answer was "doctor" yelled out "DOC! DOC!"

...and it's just stuck :) I altered it to D0c when i found out that many, many internet sites already had Doc taken, and, of course, to keep up with the l33t sp33k times :p

Cabe
6th March 2001, 16:42
"l33t sp33k" is for wannaby script kiddies who cant type fast enought to keep up so they abbreviate.

Part of your signature doesn't conform to what you said:

"Out the 100Base-T port, through the router, off the bridge, past the firewall..... Nothing but Net."

Thats more like jargon than English :p

PyscoFalcon

Well when I first started using PC's and playing over a home LAN I was Called Kamikaze :p
After a while my bro refused to let me play until I changed it cos he thought is was a **** name :(
As I developed an intrest in Birds Of Prey I changed it to Falcon but my school/work m8s and family kept saying I'm Psycho (everyday life) :)
so I changed it to PyscoFalcon (Psycho used too much) just to be different :D

no chance mate, its easier to type "GG" than some other crap spelling. Which has just occured tp me that it is quite apt looking at the venue.

JamRag
9th March 2001, 10:26
OK this is the one you have all been waiting for :)

During my gap year i worked for an engineering company that specialised in things like stainless steel hydraulically self cleaning storm drain grates (phew). These kinds of products are used so that when there is heavy rainfall, and the sewers etc flood out. They are there so that the solid items which may find their way into the sewer system do not find their way back out :)
Working in this roughneck environment, you inevitably pick up the slang term or 2 for the less pleasant things in life

Now, some of you may know what a jamrag means, some wont (PyscoFalcon :) ). I was intrigued by the way I could be extremely crude and possibly offensive with my name but many people would not even realise...

If you dont know what a jamrag is and would like to know, look at the thread "BTW...QW?", where all is revealed. Look at the end of the first page/beginning of secong page.

Note the post by Pyscofalcon where she says
"/me eats jamrag" - humourous, i think you'll agree.

Totally ignoring jam rags post, as its very hard to top something like that.

What I find amusing is at the event, its like our first names don't exist, at I series you exist as your persona is, people greet me as zhardoum, shout at me as zhardoum, and know me as zhardoum,

For those of you who haven't been to an I series I hope you like your nicks, cos its really weird when for 3 days people only use your online persona.

Funny how no one has chosen smelly or fat git as a name.. can't think why ;)
