View Full Version : Where to go on release?

With release in about a months time (unconfirmed) - Where should we play?

For the uninitiated:

PvE - limited pvp ability, you can not be attacked by the other side if you don't 'flag' yourself for pvp. Known in the business as a "carebear" server.

PvP - All out war. In 1-20 zones of your own side, you can not be attacked unless you 'flag' yourself. In zones designed for 20+ there are no rules - everyone on the other side is fair game, as are you. This is the way the game should be played :p

Horde - For all starting races it's far easier to get to Orgrimmar for the purposes of the Auction House. Has advantage of easy access to some of the high level zones like Scarlet Monastery and the plaguelands, but suffers in that there are less zones with horde town/outposts in.
You'll have to contend with Paladins, but quite frankly I'd prefer to fight a paladin than a shaman :p
Oh, and you get to kill Gnomes, always a bonus.

Alliance - It's a right pain in the back end for Night Elves to get to IronForge, having to either be portaled by a high level mage/warlock or have to be escourted past level 20+ monsters.
Have the advantage of more quests due to more towns/outposts across all zones, but suffers that some lower level zones in Kalimdor can be hard to get to due to having to travel through high level zones or horde terrority first.
You'll have to play with Gnomes and fight Shamans.

In terms of the type of server, it's PvP, no contest. The rewards you'll get (rankings, bonuses, cool gear) for being good at PvP combat makes it a simple choice for server type.
PvE is for people who wish it wasn't a MMORPG and would rather play by themselves. And RP servers are for wierdos who dressed up as Gandalf for the LOTR films and say "thou" without being sarcastic. They also do this (http://www.milkandcookies.com/links/9271/)

Generally, the Horde are outnumbered on any server you care to look at. This does mean that it's easier to find things to fight, and quests aren't crowded with 123,012 people trying to kill the 12 rats that you need for your quest. Also, Horde quests are much cooler, I don't want to be a hard-ass dwarf warrior going around trying to find the bits for a love potion, I want to find something to hammer into a thin gooey paste!

The downside of Horde, as you can guess, is that in PvP, the Horde are often outmatched, and have to resort to "hit and fade" tactics, before 107 level 60 Dwarf Paladins turn up to bash you silly. It's also a stone cold fact that you will get ganked more if you are Horde. But, it is more satisfying playing Horde and I recommend it highly.

Having played most of the races I would have to say I prefer Alliance over Horde. I have voted for PvE because I'm not sure how well PvP will work as the guild. I remember play City Of Heroes with a load of people from MPUK and that was PvE only and still fun.

Reading through the forums it looks as tho guild houses could happen which will be fun if we can get enough people in with enough money :)

Unfortunately I am probably going to lose internet access for a couple of weeks at the beginning of Feb due to moving house so I might have to catch up with you all lvl wise when I can get back online.

That actually looks like fun - I want to be the guy running around shouting "lightning bolt, lightning bolt" - everyone else is playing around, he's STONING THE GUY TO DEATH.
That looks like the way to win to me.

you will get ganked more if you are Horde. What is "ganked"?

I voted Horde PVP, btw primarily because it's no fun if there's no challenge, and we'll generally be playing as a group anyway so the PVP aspect will be more interesting with more "targets" :)

Definately Horde PVP. I've been playing to level 21 on Alliance as a Night Elf, it has been fun but when trying out the horde characters, seems somewhat more satisfying to play the other side.

Plus it shouldn't be as full as alliance is with 14 year olds all going Night Elf Rogues.

"Ganked" means that you are attacked when otherwise occupied - ie recuperating from a fight or engaged in a fight with a monster. It also means you are attacked by a player significantly more powerful than you, so you have no chance of beating them (or even hurting them) Believe it or not, but some players (especially those who have hit level 60 and ESPECIALLY Alliance Paladins/Rogues) will spend entire game sessions going to low level areas and nailing anyone who comes across their path.
Fortunately, the upcoming "honour" patch will see these idiots ceasing such activities -- you attack weaker players all the time, you will get (dis)honour, to the point where NPCs from your own side will attack you!

That honour system sounds cool, but I'd also quite fancy seeing that as just another "problem" to be dealt with.

Some asshats beating down on noobies of your own side? Form a assasination/police force and go after them.. :)

horde pvp sounds best to me :)

with them resetting all the stats on the servers on full release, starting from scratch will be good :) MPUK for horde tbh

i'm with afty on the whole anti-gank situation. ive talked to a lot of people about this, me and most others (that are playing on pvp server) consider that the manual has it down to a T: "any enemy in a contested area is fair game"

other people say that its just stupid to play like that but think about it, the whole point of the game is to destroy the opponent if you're on a PVP server, thats just what its all about.

Some1 killing you're low levels ? go kill them, or better yet go to their areas and kill their own kind... and theres so much more satisfaction with horde :D

There's problems inherent to an honour system though, which is why I'm more than happy with the way it is now. I've been ganked a few times and yes, it's annoying but you just deal with it. After all, all they have cost you is the time it takes for you to get back to your corpse. Corpse camping is another matter, but can be swiftly dealt with by reporting it on the local defense channel. I know myself that I respond to such requests when I'm in lower level contested zones.
The problems you get with honour systems are lower levels actually griefing higher levels.
You can't attack a lower level first, without causing dishonour right? But if they attack first, that's ok.
Ok fine, that's great. But what is to stop a lower level following you around, wait until you've engaged a tough monster and have a lost a load of health and then jumping you.
People do this now, except there are no rules so you just twat a lower level if you think he's going to try and take advantage.

Well I think there's a slight bias toward Horde PVP at the moment... :)

This theory (in a surprise shocker) may actually hold some weight.

If only because both of my younger brothers both went Alliance, immediatly discounting the horde. Bah to them, my undead warrior (though heavily nerfed) will dance on their graves :)

Yeh might be switching to horde for the release, night elfs suck :p

Might be a silly question why can't we have a horde guild on one server and an alliance guild on another server.

From what I can tell each server is completely seperate.

I await someone to tell me i'm wrong.

You can create alliance and horde on different servers, just not the same one.
