hiya, im hoping to get some help off u techy guys who know a million times more than me in this area (and most others haha)

so, i have a d-link 300T ethernet modem, and a westell 7400 router, i think its gona be kinda hard to explain my problem, but i will try. The modem i have works fine on its own but when i add in the router, everything goes nuts! ive managed to get it working on one pc when the router is in the chain, but when i plug in a 2nd pc, it says something about and ip conflict and knocks both pc's offline. sometimes tho i cant even get to this stage, and when i have both the modem and router connected, it wont do anything.

Im not very techy, so my explanation probably doesnt mean much to anyone, but maybe if some1 is feeling generous they cud drop me a line on irc or msn and see about helping me with my problem :) i'd really appreciate any ideas, and will listen to any u might have!!

irc @ quakenet #i0 (Tarl or JediBitch)

msn @ akito__tenkawa@hotmail.com

thanks in advance guys!

Hmm, I've got the same modem and had loads of problems.

In the end I my problem was with the IP Ranges both being the same and the DHCP mucking up.

In the end I set my modem to 192.168.1.1, my router to 10.0.0.1, set the appropriate subnets and that seemed to fix it.

I also have to connect the modem to the PC, then move it to the router for some reason. Irrating whenever there is a power cut.

Not sure if this is an ideal solution but it works for me.

yer, modem-> router-> pc

only i have to connect modem to pc first, then unplug from pc and put back into router.

Easiest solution; as there are obviously two DHCP servers or something on your network, if you can get it working with just one PC.

1: Get it all set up, get the 1 PC so it's working proplerly (whilst connected to router).

2: On that PC, do start --> Run --> cmd <enter>

3: Type 'ipconfig /all' (without the quotes). You will see a whole load of stuff come up, but you're looking for the block of info for the network card in your PC.

4: Take a note of a: The IP address b: The subnet mask (although its almost certainly going to say 255.255.255.0) c: The default gateway and d: Any entries listed for DNS servers

5: Move to your second PC (dont need to plug it into the router quite yet)

6: Open Control Panel and select Network Connections

7: Find the entry for your 'Local Area Connection', right click it and hit properties. Then select 'TCP/IP' and hit Properties again

8: Change 'Automatically assigned IP address' to 'Use the following...'. All the fields below will suddenly become active

9: Ok, the IP address for your second PC needs to be unique. Im going to assume here, that the subnet mask on your other PC was indeed 255.255.255.0. If this is the case, the IP address for your second PC needs to have the first three 'segments' the same as the first PC. The last 'segment' has to be a unique number between 1 and 254. So if your first PC has an IP of 192.168.0.1, a perfectly valid IP for your second PC would be 192.168.0.75.

For subnet mask, enter 255.255.255.0 -- this should match your first PC.

For default gateway, enter the SAME address that your first PC uses.

For DNS server(s) enter the SAME address that your first PC uses.

Click ok, then ok again.

10: Plug your second PC into the router

11: You should be all set. :)

Don't forget to get a RITA (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2321.html)

I can't believe that is the first time I've heard of RITA!

Class! :)Application Layer: Strike product vendor representative (or programmer, if available) with RITA, preferably on the top of the skull, while shouting, "Read The Fine RFC's comma darn it!"
