Hi all.

Thought I'd start a new thing, Q & A.

basically its where I ask a question but answer it at the same time. To help other people who didn't know, or didn't think of asking.

I was asked this one on another forum, but it still applies here..

HOW DO I CALCULATE THE DOWNLOAD RATE, WHY DO I CONNECT AT 56K AND DOWNLOAD AT 5K?

Firstly, there is a big difference between 56Kps, and 5kbps, ..

??

Ok, there are 8 bits in a byte.

Your connection rates is measured in bits, but download rates are measured in bytes.

So, simply, your download speed can only ever be at maximum 1 eigth of your connection speed.

so, a 56K connection, will give you a maximum 7Kbps download.

Even then, with line noise, disatortion, level of server activity etc, you may only get a 4Kbps download.

So there you know.

now, then how fast does a modem download, and my mate has 1 2mb ADSL, how fast does he download?

well again, divide by 1 eigth, for a maximum possible speed, modem = 7kbps, ADSL = 250 KBPs, after distortion line noise, it will end up like this modem =4KBPS, ADSL = 220 KBPS.

hope that helped, bet some of you never gave it much thought..!
