View Full Version : Dear God! Interview Nightmare
Ryvita

I learnt today that I have an interview on the 27th with the FCO for a dream job. More to the point I am one of two people being interviewed. As a result I'm going to have to fly back mid week for a day to do the interview.
Aargh!
Flights are Easyjet from Lyon at 21.15 Wednesday, for interview Thursday, returning to Lyon Friday Morning at 09.15.
I figure I should miss about a day and a half's skiing, but fingers crossed it will be uber job joy on return.
The job is doing risk assessment and safety advice for UK embassies and high commissions all over the world. London based with lots of foreign travel. :)
Why ambassador, with this Ferrero Roche, you're really spoiling us!

Telling them that you're on holiday isn't necesserily going to be badly perceived. You should at least mention the skiing trip..
Well anyway, if you do bugger off then best of luck old pal

You deserve it after all the hard work you have put in.

Ryv, you tell them you're on a skiing holiday with 17 friends you're a trip organiser. Tell them you will need to interview a few days earlier or later.
This will not be perceived badly, and trust me, you will *NOT* want to fly back for the day once you get there for a whole WORLD of reasons.
Ryvita
9th January 2005, 15:19
I Am aware that with any other organisation, you could state all of these reasons and rearrange, but we're dealing with a branch of the civil service here, and flexibility is not really their middle name... Flights are booked.
Ryv
P.S. Yes Ping, Your biscuity gift is sat by my PC at home at the moment, I do indeed know what you are on about, if all goes according to plan the article in question (vroom, vroom) would be ready for sale in about 2 months time. :)

I'm prepared to accept this at face value. :)
For reference to anyone that may be interested. £400 worth of new Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres going onto a certain car tomorrow. :)

I've had to create a spreadsheet with all my travel movements on it. It's very, very stupid. I can't believe I'm flying back for a days worth of skiing a nd one last night party. Actually, yes I can. :)
Currently, the only modes of transport I'm not using are:
Dog Sled
Submarine
Zeppelin

I still maintain you're mad for not having them move it forward or back a few days!
Boffykins
18th January 2005, 07:40
I think if it's the "dream job" he makes it out to be, he'd be mad to ask them something which could jeopardise his chances. Good luck Ryv, sing to them, that'll get it :)
Ryvita
18th January 2005, 11:11
Afty - Trust me, I've tried. Did you think I was doing this voluntarily???
afty
18th January 2005, 14:15
I have to be honest, if someone refused to move an interview by a few days, with several weeks notice that would be the first sign to me that they are *not* the type of people I would want to work for.
Ryvita
18th January 2005, 21:58
It's crossed my mind. However, I am intent on selling my soul to the civil service: For God, Queen and Rich Tea Biscuits! So it kinda goes with the territory. :(
Trust me, I've investigated what the job itself entails and it's worth half a mile of broken glass.
Two words. Ferrero. Roche.

At least they have your name on file. If they told you why then you can work on it, if they didn't then you can at least hope to fit the profile of other similar jobs they may have open in the future.
Don't take it too badly son, it'll turn out all right

Hard luck Ryv
They lost out, tbh.... :(

3rd February 2005, 11:45
Sorry to hear it Ryv, probably for the best. If they don't give you the job after all the effort you put in, they're clearly uttercnuts - the type of people you don't want to work for.

3rd February 2005, 13:47

Pingman
3rd February 2005, 17:14
Omfg that sux much cock, after all that effort you made flying there to get the interview and the other guy not showing up. alot of wtf. Did you ask why you didn't get the job?
Take it that also means you are not selling the vroom vroom :(
Ryvita
3rd February 2005, 23:35
Thanks for the support all, it helps. Kinda low right now. Grr. I could almost taste the nutty goodness of all that Ferrero Roche.
Have called and asked for feedback, no response yet. I'm guessing I must have made some major blooper somehow, or otherwise tripped some sort of instant failure condition.
Reeeelly lost motivation to go looking now, I was so sure i'd got that nailed. Damn. :(
I'll be right as rain come StratLAN. Much stress relief to be gained in blowing stuff up... :)
Ryv
P.S. Good luck Heron! Have some of the opposite of my kind of luck!

Could this be one of those cases where they have employed someone internally but have to go thou the interview process anyway?

Very possible...although knowing sort of what Ryv does and his exp etc...not sure how likely that would be true in this case.

I believe it's the law that they have to go thou the process even thou they have employed someone.

well, perhaps your suave look (http://andyf.me.uk/media/ryv_suave.jpg) disarmed them nicely, but I still strongly suspect you unconsciously went into mad scientist (http://andyf.me.uk/media/ryv_nukejoy.jpg) mode when 'nuclear' was mentioned in passing.

Bad luck, fate and all that.
Depends on what level of security he needed as well. Civil servant jobs and more importantly MOD jobs need a world of security checks, there is also a level where they have people SHADOW you for weeks to see if your kosher.
and we all know what kind of deviant Ryvita is :)
Ryvita
5th February 2005, 10:04
Yes, that's right Cabe, There's no way I'd already be security cleared. Oh no, not at all... :)
