View Full Version : How much time is wasted at your work? (Not through choice)

I'm currently working on a helpdesk, I spend the majority of my time awaiting calls, and then it is my job to rectify the problem as soon as possible & dispatch an engineer out if necessary. I also plan where the engineers go to certain locations...
In the run up to xmas things got incredibly quiet - so much so that out of the 7.5 hours I was logged onto the phones, I was doing nothing for 5.5 hours.
It's still very quiet atm, with about 5 hours spent doing nothing...

Just wondering - does anyone else have this much wasted time at work? or.. ? :s

I am meant to be busy all the time and i always have work i would be doing... but alas i get hours of cba.. especially when my manager is working from home... at which point my productivity is very low... and there is time wasted :D

Depends how busy I am. If I can't think what to do, or there's nothing to do, I'll find a job. Usually involves me moving lots of things around and annoying people :)

I called up work at 8.30am. I was told "There's no jobs for you so far. We'll give you a buzz when there are any".
So here I am 4 hour later, slacking like a pro, just IRCing, surfing and generally taking it easy.

Dr_Dunce.. you're 1st line support for your company. I'm one of the engineers that goes out to clients for mine. :)

I have tried to get the Team Managers to give me other jobs, and because I couldnt rewrite an entire 25MB spread sheet of data in 3 days and then present it in a different way, they gave the job to some one else.

Id say I spend about 75% of my time at work, doing no work. I hate it though, I need to be busy. But we cant use IRC too :'(

mr_roll
6th January 2005, 15:20

Today i have wasted all the work day, in a 8:30 to replace the drive in one of our servers on the RAID 5 array, restart it since some updates done to it, then we get everyones fav error message

MISSING OR INVALID BOOT DISK, PLEASE ENTER SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

Oh joy, so from 9:00 till around 3pm it spend rebuilding the array, then had to look for hte scsi driver disk to install 2K Server, and oh it has to format 275Gig in NTFS and its taken 10 mins to do 5%!!!

Then have to restore the backup.

Its not too bad since all the user drives are on the server that broke no one has done much work so no one broke anything so just sat on my ass :)

My work level varies depending on what shift I'm doing generally. Weekends are always hectic for the full nine hours of the shift while on earliers (five till two) or lates (four till nine) throughout the week can be as little as 10% work.

The majority of this time is spent listening to music or playing with the products and as I am supposed to be "supervising" I don't have to worry about being caught.

The last two days, I've had a huge amount of idle time. It's all waiting for the client/customer to get back to us with information. I do actually feel guilty because I'm contracting rather than permanent, so I'd like to actually get on with something.

Oh and during Stratlan Xmas, someone swapped desks with me :( so now the two bosses can see my screens :p: so naff all internet activity.

if you count school as work then time after exams when you're forced to just sit there.

I mean, just for GCSEs, average exam bout an hour, finish in 15 mins, that's 3/4 hour. I did 19 exams I think...15*19 = 285 minutes, that's almost 5 hours ffs :/

u finished ur exams in 15 minutes? ur either really smart or about to get a little suprise when ur results come through the door.

Nes

Im a first line techy for a fairly small consultancy company. If we stop working our boss comes in and gives us training on all the new products he wants to sell :)

If there arent support calls like leading up t christmas then we can pretty much do what we like as we have a testbed consisting of a few servers and some nice expensive firewalls to play with. If we arent working, we're learning.

Out of an 8 and a half hour day i get to slack for all of about 1 hour which is generally lunch time :)

p.s. nikumba i know exactly how u feel! :p:

My last place are hiring, in Newcastle, although when people hear theres jobs in Newcastle they often shy away from the place, I dont understand why?. Then when I ask somthing like this, people often reply with somthing like there is a lot of crime, or "its crap". Nothing really constructive.

i take 36 calls... about 3-4 mins per fix per call.

i spend 2.4 hours of my day on the phone....... AT MOST!!!

the rest of the time its passing the job on to net supp teams, admin teams, ETC

i work 8 hours

minus lunch 7

7-2.4 = 4.6 hours of yawning time .... WTF i do nothing!!

I just tend to rush exams I guess...never do too badly, got 96% in maths a few years ago, although wasn;t a proper external test or anything :p:

I spent all day tuesday playing Xbox on a spare plasma screen because the network was down due to our exchange 2003 server being commissioned. I don;t see this as a waste...

Procrastination is like masturbation - it feels good, but in the end you're only f***ing yourself.

You are in a unique position in your teens and twenties with respect to your career - you are young, full of energy, have a massive capability to learn.
You also have no mortgage and no kids to support, and if you make a mistake with your choice of job, you have plenty of time to do something again.

If you sit around not working all day waiting for something external to motivate you to work, you're wasting this chance; you don't get the shiny, well-paid, non-tedious jobs by sitting on your arse.

Afty
7th January 2005, 13:46
Indeed. I do alot of that too :)

To be fair, the procrastination comes and goes, and I'm getting better as time goes by. Self discipline was never a strong point of mine, and part of working for myself was to challenge myself to improve it, or starve trying :)

ahh procrastination. I have 2 maths modules on Monday, and I know nothing...yet I can't bring myself to actually do anything about it :/
