I'd love to get a clean visual illustration of where OUR taxes in the UK go, similar to this one for America:

http://www.deviantart.com/view/9410862/

Which is simply superb... shows you just how much is spent on "defence" when compared with social programs, or services *for* taxpayers.

That is quite nice. I'm sure somebody could find the stats for a UK one.

Especially now FOI is law actually.

The Dept of Energy spends 17.269 billion on nuclear weapons functions alone.
NASA gets 15.469 billion total!

Not intending to defend the gross over spending on defence in the US, but most of their local (ie statewide) spending is done via controlling sales tax on whatever you buy. In this country VAT goes to the government not to local authorities.
I know we have council tax, but thats a drop in the ocean compared to VAT/Sales tax.

If you want to know where it all goes you should be looking at the world of documentation on the Treasury website.

http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/budget/budget_04/

Where taxes come from:
(Total receipts - £455 billion )

http://budget2004.treasury.gov.uk/graphics/tax_comes_from_pie.gif

Where taxpayers' money is spent
(Total managed expenditure - £488 billion)

http://budget2004.treasury.gov.uk/graphics/tax_spent_pie.gif

If you want a further break down it's going to involve lots more reading. All the government departments have their own websites where you can download reports explaining what they do with their share.

Oh, also, the National Statistics website put out the 2005 year book of important figures, you can get a lot of info from there about where the money goes and which departments are responsible for what.

It pleases me that we spend twice as much on Education as the Military.

Just shows how the USA is a gun-toting nation I suppose.

im more surprised how it says 'apparantly' more than 3 times gets spent on Healthcare than the Military...

that second chart is the biggest pile of shash ever...

It depends on how 'defence' and 'social protection' is defined.

That's a mistake in the common usage of the word "apparent".

Somewhere along the line, people began using the word "apparently" in place of "allegedly", they more or less mean the opposite thing, so the Government are stating that the spending is clear for all to see rather than a rumour of some kind, whereas most people would mistakenly interpret that to be the other way round.

plus, i think america have more things to defend agasint. If we got in trouble, america would be defending us with all that money.

And btw, whats the point in making all that research into a JPEG for crying out loud. Wouldn't a website make much more sence? Or at least a PDF.

So, which country is harbouring terrorists now? Who do we have a right to "act pre-emptively") against?

Ever tried to read the governments stats pdfs?

I have, I rapidly lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen to the brain.

Because you can just look at it and see straight off where things are going, it provides an easy to understand breakdown of everything. You want a pdf of tables? google, there are loads of them, and you will get bored before you extract nearly as much information as you do from a quick look at that picture.

The human brain absorbs things alot easier when they are presented in a clear, easy to understand pretty diagram like that is.

Also when looking at this you do have to remember that America is vastly different in terms of health care, they don't have an NHS, it's pretty much all private medical insurance, and each state has alot of control over most spending, congress doesn't have all that much to do in terms of controling spending.

Now that i liked :)

We i my opinion spend far too much of social security and Healthcare now dont get me wrong i think these systems are great concept however atm they are so poorly implemented and are abused extensively they need to be re evaluated and re-organised. Something need to be done about all these leachs that have like 7 kids and dont work a hard day work ever in there life (a little extreme 7kids but the same for the 15-16yr olds that get pregnant fo the money an basically a cost free life for the next 16years etc), social security is a joke when i lost my job you know how much i got for the 4 weeks i was unemployed £12.54, yet i see Mercs BMW's all parked at the job centre across from my house signing on, there are ppl i have known who are earn twice as much as me a still getting £200 houseing benefit and income support (does anybody even both checking them i mean FFS).

I apologise for the rant and any single mothers/dads that i have upset but the local area i live in is full of these little girls (and they are just girls) pushing round prams full of future townies (chavs) in groups like they were at school while i have to go to work to pay my taxes to support the stupidity of haveing a child without being able to support it fully.
