You have to have the CD in the drive when registering a HL2 box copy.

I hate to dissagree with you say_ten, I got my boxed copy and registered the key to my steam account at work without putting the disk in.

I bought HL2 Collectors Edition from the USA and my cdkey is printed on the cd insert inside the cd case

You dont actually need the dvd to play the game though. I thought you might need to in order to listen to the music that plays at different times in the game, seeing as putting the HL disk into a CD player would give you access to some freaky music.

My local ITgames and GAME and virgin megastore all have dummy boxes.... :P HMV have the game sealed in the plastic with a security tag, if you take it down stairs to the exit, the alarm goes off... so you have to pay upstairs or truely leg it... i got mine off zee internetthough :P

My local pc world store has grown wise to this and actuly removed all codes from all game boxes after they clicked on that people were doing this. I don't think my local game has tho.

When I tried to register the copy that was getting posted to me the first thing it did was complain that it wanted the CD in the drive straight after entering the CD key.

Couple of guys I know got back to find boxes with no cd keys :p

Went back to HMV where all the proper boxes where in a skip.
