View Full Version : Thanksgiving on RAF Lakenheath
Exegesis
16th November 2004, 18:50
When: 25NOV04 1400 at the Eagle's Landing on base.
Where: RAF Lakenheath, Brandon, Suffolk, ip27 9pn
How much: 10GBP for food, 25GBP for a room (up to two people per room).
Space is limited, only 18 slots.
Basically i'm throwing a thanksgiving bash, if you dont know what thanksgiving is, look it up. I already have invited a few people who are coming, so some of the spots are already filled, but please, express your interest here so i can begin making a list of attendees. Thanksgiving is going to be a rocking time, there will be bowling, and lots of fun things going on. Also you have the oppurtunity to be on a RAF United Air Force Installation (how many times have you had that oppurtunity).
PLEASE! Let me know if you can make it!

I would love to attend with LittleGem but it is in the middle of the school day and I probably couldn't get the time off, and she is on nights that night ... a bit of a bugger actually ... I would have loved to have celebrated Thanksgiving with you American style. Ill ask tomorrow but I suspect the answer would be a no. :(

This is a great invitation, if it wasnt for work :(, I'd be there like a shot. The Air Base is like a Mini-America, its superb and thanksgiving is a big thing, I'm sure they will celebrate in style. Just remember if you are driving on the base, when you come to a 4 way stop, STOP!! (even if it is clear). Otherwise you'll get into trouble ;)
Out of interest, what drinking laws are enforced on the base?. US style (21 & over) or UK style (18 & over)?
Exegesis
17th November 2004, 10:03
on base we've basically taken and mixed the good british laws with the good american laws. so it's legal to drink on base at 18.

Okay, i had to make up names for the rooms of the people's whose real names i didn't know, so we'll get those sorted with the correct names soon.
So far i have the following three rooms with people in them:
Room Craig Fletcher
Wizzo
Her0n
Room David White
Drarok
WeeJ
Room John Elders
Winbar
Amanda
Room Steve Sanders
CyberDrac
Dan
Room Paul Cain
Bugalugs
That means there are five rooms left.
In addition the following people will be attending:
Pos
Dam0cles
Guigsy
Pumpkin
Switch
ME!
That means we have fifteen attendees in total so far including myself. There are eighteen spots, so only three more left.
There are only four rooms left as well. Myself and Pos will not be occupying any of those, so that leaves four rooms to be sorted between the four attendees and the remaining three spots.
Hope that makes sense.
Believe me, this is going to be a rockin time!
(also, guigsy, if you plan on bringing your girl, remember, it's best to plan ahead and not have to hide in the shadows whilst the rest of us shout "GET A ROOM!" due to your poor foresight and not having booked a room ahead of time)

17th November 2004, 10:18
Hmm ... getting better ... most people are saying that I should take the time off ... a once in a lifetime oppurtunity and all that ... I'll get a definite in the next 24 hours if that's OK with you.
Edit: and if I do get the go ahead I'll probably need a room and a very early start in the morning to get back to Kent for work.
Can I have this as a provisional yes please?

I just noticed that you put LittleGem in a room with me ... unfortunately it would be just me attending since she has to work a night shift that night and will almost certainly spend the day in bed resting up and adjusting her body clock. So some other poor sod will have to share a room with me ;) So just me ... on my own ... solo ... :(

Bugalugs submitted his payment via paypal, due to my requesting payment in a previous email. This is fine, that means he has reserved himself a room as well as paid for his meal by paying me 35 pounds. Now if someone else (CyberDrac) would like to share Bugalug's room with him, then you need to sort out paying Bugalgus for the cost of the room which he has already paid 25 pounds for. Everyone else can sort out payment for their rooms once they get to the base, as the window for paypal transactions to be fulfilled has passed. So please, no more advance payments, we'll sort everyone's cash out at the visitor center on the 25th. Also I plan on sending out a briefing for everyone who has signed up before this upcoming weekend.
Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest thus far.

I've already booked 9 rooms. No one needs to pay in advance. Come monday morning though, i will be releasing all rooms that have not been filled.
So dan, if you want a room, either you can reserve your own, or you can bundle up with CyberDrac and share the cost of his room which he hasn't put forth cash for yet. Bugalugs on the other hand has already paid for his room, so if you want to bunk with him, you need to go through him.

Three rooms left though, lol, not like they are going to be used though, unless you guys want to have a room to yourself, i can switch you to a room by yourself if you want. But you'll have to pay the full 25 pounds and wont be able to pay the split cost between your current roomate.
BTW! You are SHARING a Queen Sized bed if you are currently in a room with someone else.

Everyone will pay at the front gate upon arrival, i will then go to the cashier's cage here on base and convert the money over to dollars. At which point i'll be providing for everyone throughout the rest of the evening. I tried thinking of a better solution but due to the fact that i am sponsoring everyone, i am responsible for all military related transactions while on base (as they only accept dollars). Place like Taco Bell, Popeye's, Subway, Burger King, etc, all accept pounds though, as they are ran off the british economy by british nationals.
So if you are sharing a room you will be paying 12.50 for that. Or if you have a room to yourself it's 25.00.
The meal is 10.00 per person.
Remember, i will be sending out a detailed email this weekend so that everyone is on the same page and no one has to worry about getting apprehended while on base. ;)

Exegesis, dont underprice yourself dude, I know what your like for offering too good too be true prices and hitting your own pocket. Everybody else, your going to have a rocking time, but make sure Exe. doesnt end up out of pocket (im sure your all quality and wouldn't). If he end up buying food / drinks all day/night, it is going to cost more then £10 per person...

Okay... the legend continues. Called and confirmed that we indeed will have full access to the best, hippest club in all of suffolk, no wait, all of southeast anglia... 48th Avenue (Pos can confirm my claim). I'm talking a night club that provides, wait for it, xbox live, on four consoles. Internet access, did someone say surcharge? I THINK NOT! How about playstation 2? Maybe a little foozball and air hockey while you're at it. And of course there will be brand spanking shiny new pool tables and electronic dart boards. Plush leather couches for when you find yourself too innerabated to stand due to the rock bottom beer prices, the equivalent of less than a quid a bottle (and oh the assortment!).
Wizzo, sadly they don't do straight liqour (spirits). So your options are limited to beer, wine coolers, and other assorted girly drinks. There is of course soda's as well.

As a local to the area I'd like to offer the following advice for those of you who are driving to Lakenheath..
If you are coming from the Newbury Area (or west eg. bristol, cardiff), and you wish to avoid the M4/M25/M11 route, the best route is A34, A43, A421, A14, A11.. (this is my normal route to and from I-Series)
From the South its M25 -> M11 ->A11, there is little choice in the matter :(.. Unless if you know the M11 is blocked, you could go M25 -> A1 -> A421 -> A14 route. The A12 is a poor option..
From the Midlands & North, drive to the end of the M6 (or M1J19), then onto the A14, then its A14 -> A11..
From the North you can also go A1 -> A14..
Warning, about Cambridgeshire and the A14, not only is there a lot of traffic, cambridge police regularly have speed traps on there and their are camera's there as well. So be watch your speed especially on the A14 section between A1 and M11..
Oh the other speed trap area is the road leading to Lakenheath (off the A11), its a long straight road, and it appears police like to gun that road as well.
Everybody drive safely and have fun :D

We drive on the UK side of the road on base. It's pretty much identical to what you are used to.
Also you can drive anywhere on the contollment side of base. I'm responsible for supervising everyone while they are on the installation though, so you must be under my survellience at all times. Which means we have to stick together as a group. I'll need to know where everyone is at all times (unless you need to step off for a minute to use the loo). We'll make sure everyone is informed ahead of time if we plan to shift locations around the base, so that everyone can make sure they dont miss the movement.
If anyone is found wandering around absent of my precense you may be asked to provide security with my contact information and they will try to get you back to me. If they are unable to though, you will then be escorted off the installation and i'll have to come get you back at the gate once you do get in contact with me.
There is parking on base, but just like everywhere else in the UK, it can get a bit tight. I'm a bit curious as to how we're going to get everyone parked in the Visitor's Center for processing, but i'm hoping it will be deserted due to it being a holiday. Either way, we'll sort something out.
Any other questions?

They drive on the LEFT on the base, I believe you will be able to drive on the base, dont forget to take some decent form of I.D. (otherwise it might be hassle getting on the base). All cars are normally searched before entering the base.

In addition the following people will be attending:

ME!
Total Attendees:
18/18
Meal Attendees:
15/18
Total rooms:
9/9
The balance marked next to each name shows how much the individuals have paid.
Everyone marked as "Pay on Arrival" will be expected to provide their own dollars. Same goes for spending cash for those of you who have not requested any (the bar is not going to be much fun without being able to buy drinks). All the entertainment throughout the event will be provided free of charge.

No need for car sharing, unless you really want to save petrol or something. When i say parking on base is limited, you have to remember i am speaking from an american standpoint. There's PLENTY of parking on base. Probably way more than you brits are used to in most circumstances. Also it's a family holiday, so most people will be at home with there families, and that means even MORE parking ;).

How cheap/expensive is the bar BTW? ... 'cos I have been known to have a few beers/shots and would hate to run out of the mighty dollar at a sobering moment ;)

for those of who are paying on arrival, do we pay for the rooms in dollars?
Exegesis
23rd November 2004, 20:25
beers are going to be around $1.50 each.
there will be no shots/liqour/spirits. my apologies to everyone for that. but the beer selection is pretty wide and you'll have the oppurtunity to try many drinks you've never had before.

yes, the rooms will be $45.00.
The meal is going to be $18.00.
And you'll want to bring yourself about $20.00 spending cash.

I've confirmed and recieved payment from the following individuals:
Bugalugs has sent in:
£35.00
Drarok has sent in:
£65.00
Switch has sent in:
£33.50
Damocles has sent in:
£35.00
Winbar has sent in:
£45.00
Could everyone else please PM/email me to confirm the amounts you've sent (as most people were saying they would be sending money, not too many saying that they had).
Also as a last second note, the majority of Check/Debit Cards can be used here on base at the ATM machines to withdraw dollars. I don't know why this slipped my mind before, but i just remembered that Sarah (Pos) uses her debit card here on base to withdraw dollars straight from the ATMs. Sooo, if worse comes to worse, you can try that.

Just want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Exegesis and Pos for putting up with me yesterday. I have had a superb time of it, the meal was superb, the keg rocked, the supermarkets were fascinating and I'm sure that LittleGem is itching to be invited up some time so she can share the experience that I just have ;)
Many thanks to the gang for making it a memorable experience, see you all again soon. Sorry I couldn't stay for breakfast and the bowling ... maybe next time :)

i'd say that's not unreasonable. not too many people will be downloading. only 18 of us attended, and probably not all of them will be interested in the photos. and i'm guessing not many people other than that would be interested who didn't attend.

I have returned from the US / Lakenheath ...
Excellent party, with a very win keg o beer. Some quality, pre club drinking with MPUK's finest, with only the slightest bit of drunkeness from Pumpkin and oddness from Elbonio.
The club it self was great, with free pool tables, darts, X boxes and DDR along with some OPULENT Laz E Boi chairs which RTO demonstrated how to relax and fall into.
Some great staggering by Amanda post club, followed by a little more drinking and then off to bed. Where I find out that Pumpkin was as drunk as I was, and that I dont remember him snoring. However he does steal the covers.
