Anybody know any companies that are good for Colocation with a midi/mini tower?
I would ask Multiplay but i don't think they do that.

MPUK, as with 99% of other ISPs, WILL accomodate you for this, however you will get charged an arm and a leg for it.
Co-located rack units are very expensive, so servers are designed to be "rack optimised" to fit this setup.
As a result, ISPs charge PER U, for co-located hardware, and most mini towers take about 10 to 12 u when upright, and at least 4u when laying down.
Basically, just re-case the server.
Rack chassis can be had for under £200, and you`ll save many times that in the first years worth of hosting if you put it in a smaller case.

UKSolutions when I worked the (www.uksolutions.co.uk) done Colocation in normal servers at no additional charge. Basically as they have their own fully owned facility near Birmingham space wasn't an issue, so they didn't charge anything additional.
I don't work for them anymore and work for an Insurer in Ipswich now btw.
Just looking now
I think they do 50Gb of bandwidth with limited support under their Ukshells brand for 50quid a month. Think that may take a normal mini-tower (phone and ask).
Oh and they are a LINX member in their own right, and have 4x 1Gb transit connections now I think. IE not a small provider.

Tbh, thats one out of thousands of ISPs. In the long run it would be more cost effective to re-case the server into a rack chassis or even just replace it with a 1u box.
That way when you inevetibly change providers, you wont have to go hunting for one that`ll take your "tower".
That said, that place looks like a pretty good deal.

i looked into getting a server colo but then i thought, why the feck do i need it? (i now use part of works server)
Think of it this way with colo you have to usually pay extra for reboots and 24 hour support. if you really screw it up you have to fix it. no take for example mpuk hosting, if you break it, they fix it! they pay for upgrades to the server. if i needed a games server i would go with mpuk.
just a point what do you want your colo server for?

Completely agree a 1U chassis is the best way to go for future use myself - and all my personal boxen are standard 1/2U devices - Its very cheap now, and easy to build into a Rack case. Not many ISPs do offer non-rackmount at reasonable prices.
On the portability front:
If you have the money when colocating to pay extra, can justify > 255IP's (a class C), and want maximum portability you also want to ask your provider to provide Provider Inderpendant IP space - which effectively means you won't have to renumber when you move IP's - as your IP's can move with your when you move to another ISP. Though it is FAR more hassle for the ISP to provide, and thus more expensive.. Its not worth doing for less than a class C of IP's as it basically won't route properly everywhere (as ISP's typically route-filter inbound on anything less than a class C). If you need ~ 8-16 class C's - its cheaper to become a Internet registry yourself - though does take a few months.
(Can't tell I used to work at an ISP can you).

starquake according to their full price list it's £250 for 50GB of data transfer per month, that's a rip off and that doesn't include the placement of the server.
how about these companies:

Mus5icMan, its £50/mo for £50Gb - look at the Ukshells colocation - its aimed at people who
1/ Don't need support
2/ Don't need an SLA.
Additional bandwidth is £1/Gb/mo.
http://www.ukshells.co.uk under Colocation (Same company - different brand).
The Uksolutions brand is/was when I worked there used by corporates who Needed an SLA, 24x7x365support, remote hands etc - if you are an individual wanting their own game server - basically you don't need any of that as the service has free rremote power cycles (via web), so as long as your box boots cleanly, no support needed. In addition most companies hosted by the Uksolutions brand buy by the Mbit/sec, not Gb...

Just be aware that if you're running a few games servers, you'd be surprised how fast 50gb of xfer will go.
Of course it depends on the games, the kind of usage they get etc etc; but just bear it in mind. :)

GeeDee - completely agree - games servers are complete bandwidth hogs for some games. Others are not too bad.
Counter strike in paricular is quite reasonable at ~ 64-100Kbit/sec/user - but thats still 750Kbyte/min per user by my calculations.
That said most Colo providers do have an online control panel to measure usage - typically measured hourly and that email you when getting near a limit/when it is broken - those that don't shouldn't be used!

Oh Multiplay do colo now too :)
Email (sales@multiplay.co.uk) for a quote. You can do bandwidth by transfer, or do a 95th percentile package.

dont go with colo, its cheaper just to get a dedicated box, someone else owns, its cheaper, and you dont need to do any maintance ect, on them when they blow up.
(and colo costs a fortune, i wanted to do the same thing my self, untill i seen the prices, - see http://www.interhouse.net/ )
