i'm useing wep on my wireless router/modem,
whats wpa and if i switch to wpa does my wifi software have to suport wpa ???

Yes, your router and wireless card need to support WPA.

tbh, wireless sucks...the amount of issues I've had with wireless....good old wired networks own :p:

i am the same, my wireless has been going nuts over the last few weeks, the only way i can get it to work is by no security! (now separated by its own firewall!)
go wired, especially for gaming
