Okay - I know noone here will use them - bit of a niche ISP.

I use AAISP - www.aaisp.net.uk - they do 1Mbit home for about £37/mo, and 512Kbit for 27.50

Note there is a cap, but ONLY during working hours.... AAISP is primarily a business ISP - and I use stacks of data 6pm-8am. On the 1Mbit service cap is 40Mbyte/hour - though its averaged over the month and they don't mind. They have a usenet group on uk.net.providers.aaisp where customers post.

Advantages are as many IP's as you need free of charge - so you can run with no nat. Great for lan parties and the like for friends, IPV6 available.

Amazing pings for online gaming, as the network seems to be basically unused out of business hours... 20-25ms is the norm on counter strike, peaking at around 35ms.

You could do a lot worse than eclipse. 1Mbit is a bit excessive at £38 a month, but 512k Flex is £24, and gives you the option to bump it up to 1mbit for 9p / hour. How often do you really need the 1mbit?
They have a no capping pholosophy. Up to 8 static IP's on request and justification with no additional charging. 1 month contract

i'm migrating to www.xifos.net

1 meg uncapped unlimited is currently £25
1 month contract
and if your not happy they'll pay ur migration fee to leave.

Nildram. OTOH £35/mo with a cap but very VERY large cap.

Nildram was a serious contender, but i've gone off um since they got bought out by pipex.

BT Broadband 1mb (not the Yahoo one) is now £27-28/month, with 30gb a month cap though that isn't being put into place until feb 2005 with options for upgrading the cap.

Nildram or Eclipse

Both consistently in the top 5 for speed, at www.adslguide.org.uk , and Nildram host Jolt servers so could be good for gaming, reasonable price, and am considering moving over to them soon, I am researching at the moment and Nildram seem to be my likeliest bet at the moment, Eclipse a close second and upgrading my BT line third.

Another notch for Plus.net here, excellent service, tells you if and when they go down for maintainence so you can plan in advance (though it's usually from 3-6am)

I love Bonkers for bringing me to them :)

Mmmm, Bulldog.

Even better, if you live in London, they give you 4 meg downloads plus a phone line for £40 a month - which is why I've told BT to FO.

For £52 a month you get the same service but ALL local and national calls are free! (I just never use the phone)

I've got the leetor homeworked 2mb package from PlusNET and they're the best ISP i've ever had dealings with. Can't rate em highly enough.

You get a WORLD of extra stuff with an account and the support is really really impressive.

Bulldog currently have HHUUUGGGEEE ipstream capacity issues, and have been rather poor at sorting things out. Unless you can get LLU based products in london, in which case its kick ass (Although imho, them cherrypicking exchanges for LLU is worse than BT deciding what the enable and not)

Plusnet - good package, but too cap happy for my liking

Boffykins

PlusNET as well. Wishy, what you talking about? They don't cap at all?

wishy
22nd September 2004, 18:11
Boff - Theres a basic 2gb package, then you pay for more, (Up to unlimited)

Given they were one of the first ISP's to kick off 0800 dialup heavy users, and they've already started implementing capping, I would rather steer clear myself.

Mouse_On_Mars
22nd September 2004, 18:12
They give you the option of a download cap, and you pay less.

Boffykins
22nd September 2004, 18:12
Yeah, so you pay for the unlimited, which is on a par pricewise with other providers. What's the problem?

wishy
22nd September 2004, 18:17
Boff, agreed, at the moment they have unlimited caps, but i just don't trust after killing off 56k accounts. (If we look at recent history, the companys that killed 0800 dialup accounts have been the first to implement capping on their broadband. They're after profit, not looking after customers)

As i said, i'd prefer to go with eclipse who have a complete no cap policy, and offer a generally more flexable package.

GeeDee
22nd September 2004, 19:08
Don't assume Wishy.

It's the whole point of having the option of paying less, with cap or paying more without a cap. :p:

tbh I've gone off bulldog...they may do a 4meg line...but they're not the most reliable...as in my work's web was down for bout 1/2 hour and slow for bout 3 days cos of probs with them, although that was only once, I have no idea if it happens often :p

Been with Pipex for a couple of years, service has been great. Though just about finish my special price for being a tester of there 1mb service (28.99), and now looking for 2mb service. Bulldog are generally rated as one of the best. Though there recent network issues have upset alot of people.

Also if your planning on using newsgroups on Pipex, note they have just implemented a 10gb download cap a month, just on newsgroups. but for £2, you get an extra 5Gb.

well i havnt recieved my email yet and i've managed to use up 55Gb in a little over 5 days. I average around the 45Gb mark a month for 7 months and still nothing.

They are only moving 0.3% of users who are using about 10% of their total bandwidth. Seems fair enough to me. I use a 2Mb HomeWorker package without a limit. £66 a month. Fantastic isp.

btw. I think this thread was dead but now it lives. Frankenstein tread. :)

I'm only on the 512k but you get a static IP and unlimited downloads for £22 inc. VAT 1mb is £11 more a month.

GeeDee
19th November 2004, 09:33
I push more than a fair amount of traffic via my 2mb PlusNET homeworker account and i've not been contacted. I think it's only fair that people who run their connections at 100% 24 hours a day are shunted off. With an ADSL account, you do not pay for a 1:1 connection. Bandwidth costs the ISP money - therefore they have to contend it. I commend them for making the decision to sort it out before it becomes a problem for other users -- as the service they provide is very very good indeed. You can't expect an ISP to soak up the cost of that kind of usage. I imagine that 0.3% are people who leave P2P apps running 24/7 maxing out their connections. If you want to do that, buy a private circuit and pay for it.

:)

wishy
19th November 2004, 10:09
I'm not an excessively heavy broadband user, however to me, chucking people off because they use it too much is against the whole ethos of broadband, unlimited always on connections.
Its also the start of a very slippery sloap

Cabe
19th November 2004, 10:12
not since the whole BT "unlimited 0800 access" has anyone put unlimited in an advert.

you dont buy into a mobile phone contract and expect infinite free minutes talk time why should your internet be any different?

GeeDee
19th November 2004, 10:47
I bet you'd complain if your ISP hiked the price of your connection by £30 a month though Wishy. How do you expect an ISP to support that kind of usage? Bandwidth in the UK is certainly not cheap, especially international transit -- and if 0.3% of a userbase is using 10% of resources, I don't understand why you complain when an ISP takes action to retain a good quality of service for 99.7% of it's users.

And besides, PlusNET hasn't even terminated anyones contract, they've just pushed all the heavy users together onto their own platform. If the heavy users curtail their usage, they won't even see any change in service.

Nivek

i use the blueyounder 3mb (between 3 im the flat) the other 2 dont really use it.

i am not a heavy user, but when i want something i want it NOW, even if it is a linux iso at 650mb!

anyway if you can cable is cheap for the bandwidth you get, i am on 512 nildram at home, which i have had no problems with
