Oh hi

ive just moved into uni accomodation and am sorting out my net connection. However, despite offering access to basic net services (web pages/msn) the port blocking is so over the top that NOTHING else works.

at all

IRC? sorry nope
Teamspeak? nah
ANY ONLINE GAME? no chance - soz

i contacted the admin team today and they have told me that they block all ports over 1024 to stop illegal file shar download scum hax.

but im not that fussed! i just want a bloody chat on irc and comms and quick blast in CoD!

so anyone that can explain how i can avoid this nasty little issue and get me back to full tasty networking strength please reply!

If i cant solve the problem - a phoneline + BB will have to go in with a wireless router - expensive!!!

Cheers all!

If its blocked, its blocked, and for good reason.

There are some funky things you can do with bouncing data off of routers and things, but that would probably violate any APU they have in place.

Failing that, you can try poking things through a proxy, assuming they run one. But even then, they might be blocking ports.

I know we do!

(I work for a uni, and do halls network stuff...)

You could run a bouncer on a shell somwhere on a port lower than 1024 or somthing for IRC.

Have had a discussion with flat mates and we have decided to go the BB/wireless router pathway, mainly due to the fact that it allows you to "aquire" things, as well as being a lot more open for any future apps.

/me goes off to find a wireless router, a 2mb ADSL provider with unlimited bandwidth and 3 pci w/lan cards

Well, the Halls network at our place is NAT-based, all on private IPs, and firewalled to only allow ports http, https, DNS and FTP internally - anything else going out on the JANET link is bunged through the proxies.

Anything that can go through proxies (i.e. MSN) will work fine. Anything else doesn't.
