To set the sceen for you,
its a grade 2 * listed building, at the moment the bt cable come out of the ground, up the wall round the house, across on section of the roof and into the kitchen, its not been tacked properly so it draping everywhere and it sticks out like a sore thumb (its a 16th century house)

The solution would be to bring the cable in earlier, into one of the downstairs room then route it from there. The question is am i allowed to cut the BT cable re-route it and reconnect it?

If not how do i go about getting BT to change it for me?

You're not allowed to touch the cable before it comes into the house to the junction box. After that it's your responsibility (but still illegal to plug unapproved devices into sockets).

You need to get BT to do it for you, call customer servics.

Technically theres no reason why you couldnt do it if you knew what you were doing (altho the very fact that you asked sugests that you dont) as long as you wired it up correctly it shouldnt matter.

Legally however, afty is correct. Everything up until the local termination point is property of BT, and you shouldnt touch it.

After speaking to BT (and listening to the hold music for 30mins) i found out that it will cost me £133 for the first hour and £75 for each subsquent hour. the earlyest that they could do it would be the 8th of october.

Well Judging by those comedy prices BT have quoted Im glad I moved mine myself, as there is no
way I would pay BT £133 an hour to unscrew 2 wires, drill a new hole in the wall and wire them back in?

I had a second line installed a few years ago by BT for my ADSL, about a year ago
I needed to move the socket to a different room as I was moving my office in my house.
I simply unscrewed the socket from the wall, re-routed the cable along the outside of the house,
drilled a hole and fed the cable back in and voilla!

I however must agree with Afty as Im sure if I needed BT to come and do some thing to my line now they
will probably say something :D

Kevin, are you sure you asked them for the right thing ?

That looks more like the prices to run a new wire from the pole, not just relocate the master socket.

Yeah, I also found out you're not supposed to touch the cable before it gets to the master socket.... After i had added to it! Oh well, not as if they are ever gonna notice it.

Nowadays its less of an issue, if you f*k somthing up, you`ll only take out your own phone line, but the rules were put in place long ago when a short circuit at the customer end could cause all sorts of problems at the exchange.

i think i will open up the master box, see how it looks, if its not to bad, take photos (always good for referance) and write down all the connections.

if you dont hear from me for a few days you will know why
