I am using my dell 8600
1.7 gig
1 gig of ram
a FX GO 5200
800*600 with all details off its still running like a dog!
Any ideas?

Seriously, you'd have better luck with an abacus :)
Try changing the following lines in your Doom3.cfg (back it up first)
set image_useCache "1"
set image_CacheMegs "256"
set image_CacheMinK "20480"
This should enable the pre-cacheing of compressed textrures on load (your textures should be pretty compressed on min detail) and help smooth out the game.
Otherwise check the config for anisotropy levels and anti-aliasing, which doom3 sometimes turns on on its own.

With the same graphics and ram on a Dell 5150 (though a 3.2g HT processor) I have it on high graphics and all but the super elite gfx on and it runs fine in 800*600 after forcing the drivers to the latest nVidia ones (61.77 off the top of my head) as a FX5200 (not the GO edition). Also turned the graphics to run at max performance rather than quality.
