View Full Version : Blurry Text Problem

Gotta problem. Using 4.7 of ATI drivers, DX9c and a 9200 SE (thx to baz).

The text in Doom3 is really blurry. See above link. I've got all the advanced graphics options turned off in game. The text is only ok at 1024x768 (also true for PDA in game) which makes the frame rate unplayable. I've just re-installed the ATI Drivers to no effect.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this at all?

its just the fact that id are scaling what would be on a 1024x768 display down without keeping the same pixel size on the text, same display less pixels. it was the same with some text on Q3 iirc.

ok a friend said he'd completed it in 640x480 and it was not blurry. The text was fine and he reckoned it's a problem with drivers... either ATI or Direct X I suppose?

no problems here (not like that helps), i tried putting mine into 640x480 mode, turning off AA, setting low quality, and the text was fine on mine.

BUT when i tried changing the ATI control panel OpenGL settings to low quality/high performance, it went blurry as you had. put these to high quality/low perf, and it should go clear.

its probably another result of the whole Xbox factor...
the native res for the console is obviously 640x480, so they built the game for it... resampling to larger screen sizes is obviously going to have that effect...

ok thx for the help so far.

I've still not got any idea how to fix it. As far as I'm told the text should be perfectly rendered and readable in 640x480.

Any other suggestions are welcome (just don't take the p***)

Can anyone post a screen shot of text in doom3 @ 640 x 480 please so I can compare ???

I use the Omega Drivers myself, and with them comes a nice little tool that lets you change some graphics rendering options in the shortcut to the program. Amongst these are texture detail options. When turned right down, writing becomes very blurry. Make sure that you don't have any such options enabled, as text is in fact a texture and therefore subject to blurryness if texture detail is reduced a lot.

sorry didn't notice that first time around.

I played with these settings OpenGL and the performance is much better.

Thanks.

surely setting anti-aliasing to 0 will improve the performance even more...

Yup. If you select High or Ultra it sets you AA to 8 in the DoomConfig.cfg file. Go in there and look for
seta image_anisotropy "8" and reset it to 0.
i have fiddled about a bit and have these settings. Aint too bad imho.

seta r_multiSamples "1"
seta image_downSizeLimit "256"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "256"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "64"
seta image_downSizeBump "128"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "32"
seta image_useCache "0"
seta image_cacheMegs "128"
seta image_cacheMinK "200"
seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1"
seta image_useNormalCompression "0"
seta image_useAllFormats "1"
seta image_useCompression "1"
seta image_roundDown "0"
seta image_forceDownSize "0"
seta image_downSize "0"
seta image_lodbias "0"
seta image_anisotropy "0"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
seta g_showPlayerShadow "1"
This runs fine on my set up (see sig).
Also if you are having a problem with sound, try binding a key to this command "s_restart". This should start the sound again.

Ratty, I was suggesting it to maxrealism, who has his ATI drivers set to 2xAA

It wasnt just a reply to you, it was a suggestion. But as already stated, if drivers were set for low performance/medium quality that changes the fuzzieness.
Optimus have you tried any of the settings i suggested? If so what you think?

Thx. But I can't. The lowest available setting is 2.

See this link (http://www.maxsplace.co.uk/fast%20graphics.jpg)

I have adjusted the "Texture Preference" and "Mipmap Detail Level" to "High Performance" and I'll go try them out in a bit.

Click the aplication preference then go to the DoomConfig and reset the Antistropic to 0 like suggested and that should sort fuzziness without having to have the filters on. TBH there aint much more difference unless you have a high end card and a machine to match.

Or use the Omega Drivers ;)

I dont even have the game Ratty...

maxrealism, set the drivers to application preference and turn it off in game... that should force the bugger off :)

thanks for the help dudes.

I forgot to mention the blurry text problem went (all sorted) after shifting the Ansitropic Filters and SmoothVision(TM) down to minimum.

Just in case anyone else suffers from this problem, I've found that you can cause the blurry text problem by setting all the openGL settings to minimum (under custom settings). I've ended up setting openGL to use defaults (and getting an OK FPS).
