ok just played doom3 multiplayer over the net

hmmmmm its just really failed in my expectations....
Doom the original was open and full of new things. It was fun.
This is a poor cousin.

Multiplayer is just dull and fustrating.......Single player, there is nothing new and I find myself wanting to play half-life again because it was so much better.

*sigh another media hyped-short-lived game.

Lets hope they find a good mod....

utterly disapointed with the Doom3

I kind of like the MP. I've never got on with the UT series, so a new Quake style game is much appreciated. Its got a nice Q2esque feel to it, which I think will actually put a lot of people off. Am I the only one that liked Q2? :)

Q2 ****ing rocked for both SP and MP

imho D3 sp rocks

my impression of D3 is that it's pretty much "run 'n' gun", walk into a room, kill all enemies, walk into next room, kill all enemies....

some people may be crapping themselves with the atmosphere, i didn't (lets spawn an imp behind him. again.). the plot is spread very thin, there is a very small variety of weapons and enemies. the graphics and sound are excellent.

i guess that a pure FPS game isn't my thing. i need some deep plot ot interaction with the game to make it interesting.

haven't tried MP yet, but plain DM gets boring fast nowadays. i think it'll be like a retarded version of avp1/2 DM

make no mistake tho. Some of the mods for this are going to f**king rock.

The engine is impressive, the game is not. New stuff needs to be brought in for FPSes, like in BF and Onslaught. That kind of innovation sells a game to me. Run and Gun is boring

Onslaught wasnt innovative, it had been done before by battlefield, and battlefield was just multiplayer with vehicles which had been done a few times (albeit, not so well).

Innovation is a very very rare thing, and its not always good. Most of my favourite games are well worn ideas that have just been polished.

OMG someone else who thought this

I thought Doom 3 was a nice cross between Doom, Half-life and Quake 2

It's got that original doom feeling, the storyline aspect of half-life (at the start i felt just like Gordon) and thePDA/mission updates felt just like Quake 2 - as do some of the sounds oddly enough

But then it also had this 'new' feeling to it with the monsters from the pit of hell being very good indeed.

As for multiplayer i tried 5 servers last night and couldnt get on any of them. The lowestping i could find was 99

however i expect this will improve in a week or two

and lets not forget that the engine is v v v powerful - other games and mods will use this to good extent.

as for me i'm, happy with my money well spent. :)

It's a very good game - not the ebst game ever, it fails in some areas, but a good buy. i would reccommend.

It seems strange to me, people are actually buying this game, admitting it isnt that "Great", but then justify the purchase with the statement "Wait until you see the mods".
I think i'll hang on and wait for some mods to be released, then if there are any decent ones, get the game. Hopefully by then the hype surrounding it will have died down and it will be for sale on play's website (nice and cheap!). :D

Buying a game for its mods is perfectly reasonable, I wouldn't have gotten UT2004 otherwise.

Also one of the reasons i'm getting HL2 :)

tbh, I think the lot of you who are slagging off the game went into it expecting something new...

when it reality all ID ever intended to offer was a remake of Doom with 2004 quality graphics, sound and interactivity that beats every game out there...

I just loved it when you found random computers that you could interact with, like laptops and stuff... and the PDA emails and voice messages were top quality... I doubt HL2 is going to have anything like this (or is this the reason for the delays? Duke4Ever syndrome?)

IMO D3 has one thing going for it, atmosphere, which doesn't scare me much personally, but opinions vary. it's things like a deep, well developed plot that draw you into a game, not 20 second bouts of deathmatch with a few imps.

this is 2004, not 1993. we should expect more from the 'industry leader', not a big tech demo like the rest of their games. hell, they can hire the plot writers with licencing fees from one game.

well, I was under the impression that the entire PDA is rendered in-engine using the same techniques as used in the monitors...
and I interacted with displays a lot, largely cos you have to... it was much more innovative than just pressing 'E' :)

by the way, are you the sort that thought Invisible War was good because they removed the need to type in the keypad codes?

as for 'this is 2004, not 93', what do you think the HL2 fights are going to be like? it just seemed like 1998 all over again to me when I saw the E3 demos :)
