might sound weird but am gunna ask anyway .....

is there any way of finding out an IP address from the NIC's MAC address?? the only thing I know is that the card I am trying to find is somewhere on the interwebby .... and the only info I have found is stuff for finding it on the local network. I have tried to ping the MAC (long shot but at least I know it doesn't work) and that came back with a big fat fluff all ....

any help greatly appreciated even if it's to tell me there's no hope :)

If what you want to do, is what I think you want to do, then the answer is no.

(Sounds like a laptop has been stolen, you know the MAC address of its' NIC and you want to find out what IP range it's on so you can contact the ISP and inform the police...)

no no and thrice no

several reasons

1) The ulimate "source" MAC address is not transmitted in packets that are routed via the internet, you would need to be on the same network segment to even see it. (See here if your interested) (http://burks.brighton.ac.uk/burks/pcinfo/hardware/ethernet/router.htm)

2) You cant be sure that its even using the network card, it might be useing the modem.

Plus its not unknown for the network card MAC address to be duplicated.
