5 and 2 are both as good as each other IMHO. 3 just doesn't get a look in.

winamp 2: briliant and simple
winamp3: added loads of crap features and buggy.
winamp5: has all the features of winamp 2 and 3 plus it has cool slick skins :)

conclude: use winamp 5!

theres my crap short summary

Nullsoft said on this...

2.x was the stable, trusted version.
3.x was the new wave. It had the new theme engine, and all sorts of whizzy things built in, none of which it did particularly well.

5.x is all the best parts of 3.x bolted on top of 2.x therefore 2 + 3 = 5

That's why there was no 4.x version.

5 is good, but there's little things I think could be better.

GeeDee most likely. He used it for ages even after i installed 5 on his laptop as protest.

5 clearly wins as it has kickass Ripping and Burning built in.

With a good 5 seconds of tweak4g3, you can make Winamp 5 exactly the same as 2 in both appearance and function.

Plus, then you have the option of upgrading to all these 1337 new skins you see, ones which are all colourful, modern and fit in with your modified WinXP desktop tbh.

Not entirely true. There was going to be a version 4 of Winamp. However, the guy who did most of the work for 2 (and wasn't present for 3, hence it's suckyness) came back, and just started from scratch, even though 4 had already been started. So 4 was binned, and 5 was the next release.

I installed 3 for about a day, then went back to 2.71 the day after. Took me a while to switch what was then 2.91 to 5, but now I have, I enjoy 5 more, mainly because of its better video bits that have converted me from WMP to Winamp for video as well as music.

Yeah, I installed Winamp 3 in eager anticipation... only to findmyself removing it within the hour.
For video, I use Media Player Classic. I never did like the XP style Media Player, I always used mplayer2.exe (found in Program Files\Windows Media Player). However, when someone mentioned on these forums about Real and Quicktime Alternative, I found out about Media Player Classic. Media Player Classic to mplayer2.exe, as Winamp 5 to Winamp 2. It'll do all the same stuff, with more options, functionality, and you can even change the picture that you see when you load it up!

I really don't use Winamp as much as I used to, using Media Player Classic and iTunes keeps me going, but when I need to mess around with plugins and the rarer filetypes, I use 5.x all the way.

If 5 doesn't come with it, place _this file_ (http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~ajfogg/in_vorbis.dll) in your winamp\plugins directory.

I don't use the media library. I just add all my MP3s to the playlist and hit random.
