View Full Version : ooohh god! - rant about comp problems

Well I was modding my last case with a fan control. I was doing this with a potentiometer.

I had my computer on, testing the new mod and the cables were wrong, so i took them off and then argh! let them go! The bare metal ends of the cables hit the case side and my computer proceeded to turn off!

I was quite worried, I powered my computer up after that, no problem and was working away. Then, all of a sudden my computer went off! Not shutting down, just off, I was baffled, my computer would not scwitch back on. So i then switched off at the plug and then switched back on in about 10 secs.

My computer loaded up, no problem but it kept switching off at random points. I thought it might have been the PSU, so i swapped it with another new one that I have. Still the same problem, when it switches off I must let the power drain from all the PSU for about 10 secs before thinking about switching it back on, normally just pull the power cable from the PSU for 10 secs Oh I can also reset the CMOS with the jumpers and that will do the same.

So It wasnt the PSU, I thought ok, it might be some component, so I tested with only 1 hard drive connected, and the graphics card in, still doing it.

So I tried my "testing" graphics card, which is a 2MB PCI, still doing it.

I thought it might be the case, so I fisrt took my motherboard out rested it on an antistatic bag on the case and still, no luck, still switching off!.

So i put my computer in a new case alltogether, a nicer ATC220B case, still does it.

I have also tried another motherboard, but that caused BSODs, I tried 2 CPU's (2500XP+ and a 1600XP+) I have tried different RAM (128MB stick as well as a 256MB stick and a 512MB stick and another 512MB stick) nothing seemed to work.

I have tried 2 CPU's in the original motherboard and I cannot think of any more permutations that I could have tried with my components.

So I put it to the motherboard. Unfortunatly i will have to wait till the end of the month to get a new one as I get paid at the end of the month.

I am now just using my Mac G3 that I got from Jerky :D
Just needed to rant about that.
oh and I HATE tramps!

As im sure most PC technicians will tell you, the afore mentioned "anti-static bag" is covered in a very fine metallic layer of lines, so if the motherboard wasnt screwed before you tested it on bag it may well be now.

yeah anti-static bags are great for protecting against static electricty charges becuase they dischagre any static over the surface of the bag (rather than in one conentrated place)

this is why your motherboard was shorting out when you put it on the bag, and im guessing it's now broke

i have to say though ive never done it myself, as i thought everyone knew not to do this, so i dont know if it breaks it completely or not but my guess would be that is has

on the bright side you can have fun buying a whole new one

I could not have broke my motherboard by placing it on the antistatic bag, I have done that trick many times before in other diagnostics and it has not caused any nasty side effects to my computer.

It was me trying to mod my computer, thats when this all began.

The lesson of this rant is NEVER MOD YOUR COMPUTER WHEN ITS ON!
Hook another PSU up and use that one!

I think the antistat is unlikely to cause the problem. They tend to be sealed plastic anyway.

I managed to once pull a lead off the speaker in a case, which shorted on the bottom of the case. This resulted in the cable burning its insulation away, which then resulted in a cloud of smoke from the PC and a delightful smell of PVC burning.

I didn't know a speaker could do that!

You know what i had the same problems, but i could never attribute it to any thing, I swaped the MOBO for a new one, then the processer, then the PSU, and then the PSU Fan. After that it worked fine.
All in all it took a very long time.

If just double check that the CPU multipluyer is right.

lo all.

I've just sorted out the same problem MR Roll was having. The PC would switch off mid-game.

I've updated my ATI drivers to the latest 4.7 drivers.
The problem has cleared up... gone away.

So please try that as a solution chap !!

<edit>ok so this didn't fix anything when it comes to BF:V and it's now worse with BF:1942</edit>
