View Full Version : Modem/Router Recommendations

Hi,

Once again I thought I would seek suggestions on some hardware....

I am looking for an ADSL 4-Port Router with in-built ADSL modem/firewall (Don't need wireless tbh).

I have been told I need port forwarding too...the more the better?? As a simple modem user does this mean that for all my games I will have to set up port forwarding etc? I know little on the subject tbh.

Any brands/models I should avoid/look-out for?

Cheers for the help :)

I don't have ADSL but have fitted it for alot of people

And could quite openly say i like the DG834, used it 4 times now. Easy to setup and also easy for the standard user to understand.

I've not been called back to help out yet

Not had much experience with linksys so can't comment

But defo recommend the DG834

Concur, the DG834, while not a wonderfully special product, works quite well for what it is.

You most likely wouldn't have any complaints.

Thirded on the netgear. I've got a DG814 and its a cracking router, so I say go Netgear.

Great thanks for the info, think I will go for the Netgear router.

What about games etc? Do I have to do anything extra if I move from a modem to a router+firewall?

Just throwing my 2p in.

Alcatel Speedtouch 510v4 is what I've got.
ADSL router + 4 port 10/100Mbit switch combined.
Integrated firewall, NAT, port forwarding, DMZ and web interface for configuration.

It makes setting up firewall rules easy.

I have the Netgear DG834, it is a very good router, and the firewall works very well!

And no it hasnt effected any of the games i play ( ut2004, CoD, Halo etc)

And no you don't have to do much to move from a modem to router+firewall, the small concise manual that comes with the router is very helpful

I hope that helps :)

Atari you will only need port forwarded if you are wanting to host services on you network behind NAT. To play games you just can go ahead and play em, but if you wanted to do things like host and FTP or maybe some voice comms you would have to set up the port forwarding as ppl on the net cannot see you internal IP.

I have a Netgear DG814 and its a pos. If you plan on using an application that does lots of UDP traffic, you are best staying well away from the netgear routers. Not sure if the DG834 has the same problem as its older sibbling, but it would be enough to put me off it.

There were some quite major firmware updates for the DG814, make sure you're running the latest.

DG814, ive installed about 5 of them now for friends etc

Allthough i have had to RMA 2 of them, they both stopped conenctecting to the internet, i think the built in adsl modem died :|

this only happend after updating the firmware, so id recommend NOT updating them :)
