Ok, i am moving into my new flat soon with 2 other people, one a computer gamer the other not. I can sort out networking easily, what i need help with is who to go with for the ADSL and what speed.
i was thinking 1 or 2 mbit but is the price worth it? it needs to be an isp with out usage caps.
So i am after a mixture between price and something that will work. I have checked out www.adslguide.org.uk but was after your recommendations.
Cheers!

As far as i was aware, you need to be within spitting distance of the exchange to get 2Mb, and slightly further back (roughly a foot or so) to be within the 1Mb radius. Its about time they worked out how to extend it, because I'm just outside getting 1mb :( :(

Its within 3.5K's of the exchange (Roughly, as its governed by the line loss rather than distance, and bt's wiring is seldom as the crow flies) for 1 and 2mbit products, as they are not rate adaptive. theres no difference between 1 and 2mbit for the distance they will do. 512k will do 6km.
Even if you find an ISP with no bandwidth limit you can expect one or more of:
1] bandwidth limit imposed in the near future
2] They go bust
3] Incredibly slow service
4] Port blocking/shaping
I'd find one if I was you, that had a reasonable limit rather than none at all. We're on nildram 1Mb, it's fantastic and offers some silly amount (like over a gig a day).

I'm not sure that's true afty.
I agree that will be the case with the higher bandwidth options on some of the much cheaper ISPs (who generally contend themselves very highly on BTs cheaper wholesale products), but you can buy the more expensive higher bandwidth products elsewhere and expect no usage caps.
Some ISPs even have two product options, one with a cap on usage and another, Nildram being one such ISP.

http://www.eclipse.net.uk/ i use these @ 512k
Fastest isp (apparently) in the uk. (i'm pinging 18 to 26 to our cod server atm)
No DL caps that i know of.
No port blocking etc that i know of.
i would have said 2mb is a bit of a waste of money if your a student. spend it on something else. It wont effect your game ping noticably. Just get 1mb and limit each user if only 2 of u are gonna use it for downloading stuff so if 1 is downloading u can still play games.
NTL cable
38 quid a month, 1meg ATM soon to be 1.5 :yellow:
2 heavy users here and one light user. We've never had any issues

Was with www.fast24.co.uk Had 2mbit for a house of 10 students. Never really a problem, however its a small company, so any problems....... But yea, for a year they were good, fast speeds, good pings etc.

Ahh Nilly.
Based locally here in Aylesbury. Well, Stoke Mandeville now, but hey.
Did you know, the name Nildram comes from the name of the founder, I forget his first name, but his last was Mardlin.
So, there you go.
