Junction 15 on the M40 the A46/M40/A429 big roundabout is currently in a stage of dire pain. You can expect 3 hr tailbacks if you are on the A roads that go over this point, between 16:00 and 19:30.
Also note that the M40/M42 interchange is also mostly taken hard !
if comming from brum airport head down the M42 to the M40 and take the A3400 to henly and then to Stratford its a direct road into the top of town and adds about 1mile to the journey
Stratford Will BE busy, so make sure you limit day time trips into town to a minimum making use of later night opening as much as you can.

Indeed J15 of the M40 / A46 etc is beyond bad. Just avoid, stay away completely. Due to roadworks and people ignoring roadworks it just gridlocks. I spent 3 hours on the roundabout the other week. If you are arriving via M40 get off before J15 and use alternative routes, and if you are planning on using the A46 ... DON'T.
You have been warned :)
THanks for that heads up guys.... most useful. I've driven the Henley road a few times, and it's a very pleasant drive, especially late at night...
For those who don't know it, exit the M40 at Junction 16 (1 junction, but quite alot of miles) before Stratfords junction 15, and take the A3400 signposed Henley In Arden, continue straight through Henley and eventually you come into Stratford - take a right at the roundabout, then a left at the next - then take a right (probably signposted Anne Hathaways cottage, whoever the hell she is, poor dear won't want everyone knowing where she lives) and follow this road (small residential) through until you reach a *fairly* major but not enormous road at a T junction (or a roundabout if you didnt follow this road right). Turn right and the racecourse is like, very very near, signposted on the left of the road.
The following are useful:

Or for back road hax route...
A45 to Stonebridge Roundabout, head toward Balsall Common, go through Balsall Common then head toward Warwick. Follow the twisty omfg its countryside roads until there is a turn for Hampton Magna, just before the A46 Warwick island.
Go into an even deeper omfg its countryside road and then go B road style to Stratford following the signs. I warn you this is a very thin lane :P
Go Through Hampton on the Hill and then head towards Norton Lindsey. Then head toward Snitterfield, and then you should hit the A46 the other side of the OMFG Longbridge Island of Traffic Hell.
Once on the A46 you need to go in the back way to stratford for easiest access to racecourse.

^^ Should see what I mean on there.

For those doing the Henly A3400 route - be warned - there are a few speed cameras on this route. Luckily they missed me returning from race night.

From the south I would get off the M40 at J12 or J13 get on the B4100 and head to the Fosse Way (B4455) which is between the 2 motorway exits. Head south on the Fosse Way and turn right somewhere to head to Stratford. There are number of options you could even avoid the town centre completely should u choose.

Coming up the A34 from Newbury/Oxford, take the Evesham turning and go along the country routes through the A3400. Avoids the motorway completely and is really rather pretty

what you really want is a helicopter, or at least a car with rotorblades
Im folowing mandy so i hope she has taken note of the advice :D
If you are coming from East Anglia and you have to travel along A14 to get to M6, then there are some road works on A14 where Kettering is! They are a tad annoying, especially at rush hour.

Now?
They've been there since it was opened.
They are not the normal gatso's they've installed the new digital types. A camera at point A takes a photo, and extracts your registration plate. Another camera at point B takes another photo and also extracts the plate. The distance between the two cameras is known.
Average Speed = Distance / Interval between pics.
You're nicked sonny!

The police have been out playing with their toys in force on the toll road recently.

Most certainly. Come off the M5 at Junc. 7 and pick up the A422.

You missed my point. You're being a resident of East Anglia explains *soooo* much ;)
Are the SPECS cameras (the average speed/distance) on the bloody M6 Toll now? Or is it just "Keep an eye out for sneaky blue in a layby" ???

m8, they've been there since it was opened.
Have you not noticed the additional camera that seems to have appeared on EVERY new overhead display board?
Not that this says it was the SPECS system but it WAS on the Toll Road.

No specs as yet, just a high police marked and unmarked prescence.

Yeah, I'm not 100% certain what they are, but I have done the M6Toll in the late late evening averaging over 110 (soon after it was opened, before all the publicity about police presence) so I guess I was lucky to not be seen by billy blue sat waiting, but I can assure you, if specs was up, I'm sure 110 is above the "threshold" and I've not had a ticket... Maybe it's getting SPECs ready, or perhaps they're part of a new traffic monitoring system, or homeland security corporate welfare scheme?

Additional warning. Warwick/Leamington this lunchtime is traffic chaos, so expect more of the same fun as people flock into their caravans.
Avoid A46 at all costs.
