Take generous helpings of 70's/80's metal, add dashings of punk and gothic and a sprinkle of trance or dance if the mood is right...

My top 20 list in itunes spans the depths of Death metal to the hights of classical, in between I have everything from rock to EBM.
There is no one type of music I enjoy over others. My top two most played songs are Kovenant - Bizarre Cosmic Industries and Velvet Acid Christ - We have to see we have to know. Two VERY different styles of music.

Probably say my Roots live in rock.
But i'm just after a well structured piece with a killer rythm.
But some nights you just need cheesy pop :)

I would have to say Rock is my favourite
but i like everything except rap, R&B and DnB
This includes Jazz, classsical all the way through to the odd pop tune (though i cant stand modren manufactured crap - im talking Michael Jackson era mainly) and Dance/club music.
But as i said - generally the rule is if its not rap, R&b or drum n bass then i'm willing to listen to it

Favorite genres: dance, trance, house, techno, drum & bass.
Don't mind a bit of cheese now and then.
I was listening to the Beatles yesterday and classical is about a day away in my playlist.
The only genres I really can't stand are: RnB, garage, hip-hop, rap and metal.

Depends. I couldn't name a single genre I place above all others, nor could I name one I cannot stand without exception. I'm just weird like that :)

I'm totally eclectic. My main style I listen to is the more pop-rock stuff. REM, Fountains of Wayne, Barenaked Ladies, Red Hot Chili Peppers et al.
But then I listen to some more obscure stuff, like Cooper Temple Clause, The Mars Volta or Queens Of The Stone Age.
But, it gets better! I've got bits of blues - Blues Brothers albums, some Clapton and a bit of BB King. There's a bit of more jazzy stuff in there - Dave Mattews Band, and bands like Hot Club of Cowtown - that's Swing - a violin, upright bass and a guitar!
I float around through all sorts of stuff. Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles. Bit of everything!
It all influences me in my guitar playing and in general.

i'll listen to pretty much anything, but what really "gets me going" is symphonic metal. Anything like that, that has so much depth to the music, and can also be very delicate, and moving :)
Fave band at the moment has to be any of Devin Townsends bands, absoloute musical genius :D

There are hardly any types of music that I cannot listen too including extremes of certain genres it really depends where I am and what mood I'm in.
I like dance music (funky or scouse house, techno, electro, cheesy dance and drum and bass), rap and RnB (the likes of Jay-Z, Method Man, 50Cent, Dizzie Rascal, Shy-FX and loads others), Rock (from nu metal to heavy / death metal), Classical, Classics (60's, 70's and 80's), pop and to the down right odd (Bell & Sebastian)
My favourite bands / artists at the moment are: Aphex Twin, Ultra Beat, Kanye West, The Chillies and Athlete.
So generally what ever is on the radio I will like it :)

Generally anything but pop, rap, R&B and DnB.
Mostly I seem to swing somewhere between rock, punk, metal, occasionally goth and also some far more chilled stuff depending on mood and suchlike.
A few of my favourite bands (in no specific order and all over the place genre-wise):
Nightwish
Queens of The Stone Age
AFI
Tool
Bad Religion
CKY
Chevelle
Fear Factory
Lacuna Coil
Nirvana
London After Midnight
System of a Down
Rammstein
The Mars Volta
Ladytron
Air
Tsunami Bomb
Zillah

This thread brought back memories of a time when I use to hate anything which was not rock. I use to think dance or rap were awful and really thought people who did listen to these genres were crazy.
What a uneducated **** I was!
I have learnt my lesson though, roll on Godskitchen and Creamfields! :D

i seem to go through phases, i think im too influnced by my friends, since i used to like punk a lot, then when my best friend started listening to metal (starting with metallica, moving onto iced earth then cradle of filth etc) i started listening to it too (cheers for that corky)
but maybe thats just because i liked what i listened to when i heard it...
atm i mainly like radiohead, and the streets, with a bit of avantasia.

Hardly obscure, all three are scarily mainstream :) But still good!
My top 3 'bands of the moment' (because oh lord they DO change, on a daily basis) would be Biffy Clyro, The Killers and Snow Patrol, all of whom can seem to do no wrong lately :)
LlamaMan

Biffy Clyro are good tho they were crap when I saw them live supporting Hundred Reasons...Im gonna blame it on a one off bad show and poor choice of setlist though

It's easier to say what I DON'T like rather than what I like.
I DON'T like...
Hip-hop
Rap
R'n'B
Jazz
Blues
Bluegrass
Country
Western
A majority of what gets released for the Top 40 these days.
You get some musical gems in the charts.... "In The Shadows" by The Rasmus being a recent example, but they are few and far between.

Musical gems in the charts = anything by Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, The Vines etc. Non gems are definately things like Evanescence, The Rasmus. They should learn to frigging play guitars properly.

Franz Ferdinand are great but stick annoyingly in ones head  Must agree about The Rasmus and Evanescence

Franz Ferdinand just know how to write a good hook. There's nothing wrong with that!
As for these nu-metal bands tuning down to C or even lower, I really don't see the point. Mashing out chords through a load of fuzz is a bit boring. Nothing much happens really, and its hardly a great test of skill.
Having said that, the likes of Munky and Head from Korn are actually quite accomplished guitarists. Mick Thompson of Slipknot also teaches proper music theory. I have respect for them guys.

I judge on the ability of bands to play acoustic. Heard Evanescence on Mark and Lard a few months back, and it was the worst thing I've ever heard. Most amusing.
Although Franz Ferdinand have hardly covered themselves in glory on the live music front, jury is still out for me on that. But by god can they write good pop :)

kingdave, i wouldnt associate nu-metal and tuning down guitars to be a bad thing really.
Fair enough i hate ****ty nu-metal as much as the next guy, but i'm sure i could name some bands that have 7 strings, or tune down pretty low and are still technically excellent, and good to listen to :)

Me neither, just the ones that can't actually play, and try their best to disguise it.

Queens of the Stone Age use drop C tuning, particularly back when they were Kyuss.
It's the way you play it that counts.

Don't make me get all pernickerty about how QOTSA were never Kyuss. Just 2 members :)
And after further listening to The Rasmus, I want to kill their bassist for being a talentless fop.

tbh, the lead singer looks about 8 years old..
And they sound more like a Punk Boy band than a Goth/Rock act..

Yeah, I dont like people who are too closed minded to try new stuff, if I dont listen to things there is a valid reason for it :D hence my music collection getting a bit eclectic but still being mainly rock cos I find I like some stuff from other genres but usually only a few select tracks or bands

Actually, they use C tuning, not drop C. That would be CADGBE ;)
Although I did realise it after I wrote it, and kinda hoped nobody would notice...

If we're gonna be pedantic, then C (or any note) tuning usually means that the guitar is tuned to an open C. If I'm understanding what you're saying properly, they use standard tuning dropped down 2 whole steps (if I've worked it out correctly) ;)
KingDaveRa
30th April 2004, 12:39
Yeah it is. Its standard E dropped down two steps. I always take Dropped-x to mean just dropping the lowest string, like Dropped-D or similar.
C F Bb Eb G C is what they use I think. Or at least that's what Josh Homme tends to use, whilst Troy Van Leuween will sometimes use a standard E tuning.
