College AND work? what is this concept?

college is designed to give the younger generation of the workforce a headstart in how to slack

When i was at college, they banned the use of IRC and the forums on the library computers, so of course everyone still used them, but then they disabled them. So i left college.
I think tbh, the only thing i looked forward to was getting to use the college computers to spam, it was sitting at the college computers i worked my way into the top 5 posters, and i was one of the reasons he staff disabled post counts, so as soon as college disabled it, i lost all motivation and went to get a job instead.

Perhaps you should have chosen a course you wanted to do, or change if you soon found the one you had started to be crap, or perhaps even... tried?
Ruth
27th April 2004, 10:59
Well, no, not just for the net, i did have lessons every now and again, but i lost intrest in them quickly, so being able to doss on the computer made college worth going to.
And then i met boys and was introduced to beer and parties and i decided i need money to go see more boys and to get more beer and to go to more parties so i got a job.
Ironically, i find the more i work, the less money i have.
Wish i'd stayed at college now, put the work in, stuck at it, made life worth living, but i just, tbqfh, cnbfa.

I don't see the point in going on the net much in 6th form / college. I decided that the time used to post pointless comments would be better spent down the pub or in bed (that included ICT lessons) :D

how can i get irc at college? ;)
as for doing work, i dont think so.
college is clearly not the place for work, and if it is, its not during lessons.
btw, did anyone else do AVCE ICT?

There are some online java/CGI IRC clients available, otherwise get a shell account and telnet/ssh in and use BitchX or some other text mode IRC client
If they removed 'telnet' from the start menu and disabled 'run' then typing 'telnet://' in the browsers address bar usually does a good job of getting a telnet client open, if it needs SSH then you will need 'putty' or similar and most schools/colleges block you from downloading exe or zip files, the solution - upload to free webspace and rename, then download the renamed file and rename it back to the original...huzzah

the technitions at our college do scare me a bit...our college has a pretty high budget IT centre, best in the south aprently.
all the computers run on novell (http://www.novell.com/)
they seem slightly dappy though, so i could proberbly get away with the ol' "i didn't really know what i was doing, it just did something when i pressed enter"
which almost worked at school...

Unfortunately so, and believe me I feel your pain. :)
Biggest load of crap i've ever done. I just managed to stick out the 2 years, but that course was certainly not one of my better decisions.
If your in your first year still and have the same opinions about it as me, i'd bin it and take computing (or anything else besides AVCE). Thats probably what I should have done in hindsight. However if you think you can stick it out & get the work done, good on you. :)

i'm not finding it to tough at all, the work is easy, and when i finished my work/doing it later, i just play internet games or spin around on my chair (always fun)
the modules im good at (the ones that are mildly creative and actually involve some thinking) Im getting A's in, and the rest C's, so i dont see the point in dropping now, since were getting AS computing "free" as well, were covering all of it this year anyway.
(those 2 subjects being web design and programming btw :p)
what did you find so crap about it? other than not learning anything of course...

i did the AVCE in ICT at college, although it was the 18 unit advance jobby. found it was a complete waste of time, learnt sweet FA, but it got me into uni, so thats all good ;)

Oh no, my compliant was not against it being tough. I just can't stomach "ok, here's two weeks to create a letterheard for an imaginary company. Now write 10 pages on how you created it" - and on and on and on in the same way.
I think a tiny amount of the VB was stuff I hadn't covered at school; everything else I have been doing for years and I wasn't the only one in the group in the same situation.

Well done, your probably getting it taught to you in a very different style than I got. My course culminated with the two deputy principals literally yelling at me because, "they believed I had the ability to 'hack' their network and cause damage" and therefore they did not want me bringing my laptop in any more and wanted me to to sign a piece of paper stating that i would 'be good', to which I took great offence, as they had absolutely nothing that i'd done in the past to put against me.
Seriously, well done for sticking the work out. I could have coped with the insane write ups & mark scheme if I was learning something at the same time, but I wasn't even doing that. They even asked me to teach them how to do the hardware module and set up the machines for it; they didn't have a clue.
Interesting to know it's being taught much better elsewhere.
:)

that sucks, im glad im being taught fairly well, but i see what you mean with the letter head module, 7 assignments all using different fuctions of microsoft office...great....
but my teachers are good as well, particualy one who is sort of an old techie, he was on the orignal team that invented the hard drive, so in most lessons i spent a fair bit of time talking to him about old hardware and how it all came about, very interesting really :)

Mmm college what a lovely, distant memory that is.
Strangely, it seems I went to the same college as Afty. Think we missed each other by a year or so.
First year was BAD. They had Windows 3, which meant dubious Winsock utilities and old old slow clunky netscape. And a 64k line, shared by lotssssssss of pc's
I quit at the beginning of the second year. Which was a shame, because they got a 3mbit microwave link to a better network. Never mind, it was still Windows 3 and nutscrape :) BUT we could play Network Quake 1 :)
edit - oops, I did actually do some work at college - an "advanced gnvq in Business and I.T." ah well.

I got on with my course lecturer so she was generally okay with me "abusing" the PC facilities as long as I got on with *some* work in the session.
FTP was blocked at the proxy and yet it seemed that my account (and ONLY my account on the Computing course) had FTP access to Internet. I set up an FTP server on my home PC and just mapped a shortcut to it in my college network drive. Whenever I was doing work at college, I was actually saving it direct to my machine at home. I wouldn't be surprised if my lecturer had "Had a word" with the Systems people to allow me certain protocols out of the proxy.
Oh yeah, I also used my micro-installation of Phoenix which the proxy server didn't know how to deal with. :)

I did AVCE IT and stuck it out for the two years, unfortunately i'm easily distracted so i didn't get a very good grade :)
but screw that i'm now doing the ccna which I hopefully will be able to do something with :p:

Well I did the AVCE IT with Giles, but managed about a year and then went '**** this'.
I am now 3/4 of the way through a CCNA and intend to keep paying out for 'real industry qualifications' until i get the experiance i want.

oo, no slacking today, had 2 peices of coursework to hand in!
the excel module is so stupid.
i spent about 4 hours making a fairly basic Excel program, then we spent the last 4 months documenting it in 65 pages.
it would have been quicker to send the examiners a disk with the program on it.

I wanna get msn at college, got it all copied onto my account but im having trouble finding a proxy for it to go through..
It would seem the college lets students get information using IE through a certain ip on port 80 so i tried directing it to that but it says somethin like disallowed so perhaps the network will only recieve information through that ip on internet explorer :/
Tried port scannin the network for all proxy ports but ive tried 20/500 and it seems i can only get a response from the internet one..
Suggestions anyone? Using Windows 200 pro if its any use :)

I had a 14 page A3 visual project to create analysing the city centre of Cardiff, with maps, extensive text and drawings. I was given over 2 months to do this.
I began the night before it was due in at 7.30pm and finished 9.30am the next day, handed in and passed. :)

lots of people do think its easier at uni, but it certainly isnt for me !
college i thought was fairly tough, but not uber hard.
My course at uni is so intense, if you miss a couple of lectures, ur screwed, they steam on ahead with the rest of the course and you have to spend alot of your own time catching up :)
It might be easier on other courses, but this year just gone, has been so hard for me, i've never looked forward to the summer so much before :)

You're lucky then.
Witney college - complete crap systems. 833MHz, 256Mb RAM running Windows XP. They take half a lesson to log on. And are then really slow and have loads of problems.

It makes no odds which quakenet server you connect to; quakenet has no k-lines; it's g-line only. The way it works with public cgi-irc servers is that 6 users connect, it g-lines you for 2 hours; in 2 hours you will be fine again until 6 users connect. Repeat. Mouselike will be g-lined 95% of the time, especially as it's now been posted on this public forum.
Your best bet is to set up your own cgi-irc. It's freely available here (http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/) - but you'll need a *nix based box to host it on. And if you do host one, password protect it. :)
Giles.

is it possible to get a java one?
GeeDee
17th May 2004, 18:34
There are plenty of java irc clients; but they won't work if your behind a firewall that won't let you make outbound connections on port 6667.
cgi-irc is pure HTTP IRC. The java clients make direct connections to irc.
:)

Well i couldn't get it to work at college as the port was blocked lol, so i tried changing the ports with random ones i made up, but this was no use lol. Either that or the the server for it was full.

17th May 2004, 21:22
ur college sounds like mine, basically only ports open is internet afaik!
GeeDee
18th May 2004, 15:46
All cgi-irc needs is the ability to view world wide web pages; be it proxied or not.
But don't expect the mouselike site to work; public & unrestricted cgi-irc clients are generally always g-lined on Quakenet once people find out about them. :)
Giles.
