View Full Version : Stuff that needs to happen

Zakalwe
20th April 2004, 09:38
Right, it's about a month to go so in preparation here's a list of stuff I want to see at the LAN.

People can volunteer below if they have the required gear.

Non-computer stuff:

BBQ's - we may or may not have FISSC style facilities, but disposable is always an option.

Frisbee - and not a ****ey indoor frisbee too. I'll bring one of these

Football - Aftychu I choose you!

DDR - necessary TBH

Poker - not for me, but other people like it. If you have chips or some other form of betting device then all the better.

Magic cards? - CBA really.

Pictionary - with a whiteboard, yes indeed.

Computer stuff:

More trackmania than god

A ban on the UT invasion server :)

Some good games of Onslaught and Assault (I'm happy to do big-screen run throughs of assault maps first so everyone knows how to play them).

A good game of generals

A patched game of Railroad Tycoon 3

A game of Civ3

Finishing SMAC from our last LAN - Afty the deadly hippy-univ-hive alliance will destroy your UN scum.

Some Far-cry, assault mode.

Some joint-ops, say 50v50? :) We'll need a server for this.

A game of NLsnipes...

Have I missed anything?

20th April 2004, 09:45
What about the alcohol?

Tbh, we REALLY need a decent Big-Screen area at the LAN

Added to that is, of course, the HIGHLY Illegal Mini-rave on one of the nights, powered by DJs Arty Ho, Mingetea and Lucicock

BBQ's - we may or may not have FISSC style facilities, but disposable is always an option.
I propose Mandy to take hold of this gem if Team Stratlan (Wizzo, Bugs) have more than enough to do :)

DDR - necessary TBH
Mandy and Towneh on it already I believe, with Mandy sorting a dedicated comp for DDR for the i-series it may be ready for Slan - honey? :)

Poker - not for me, but other people like it. If you have chips or some other form of betting device then all the better.
What was wrong with mini eggs! :p

Pictionary - with a whiteboard, yes indeed.
If someone has a LARGE whiteboard and paper at work that'd be brilliant - and has the space to transport it obv :) I can supply black markers in excess

Have I missed anything?
Monopoly Tycoon - sort it oot Afty love!

Afty
20th April 2004, 11:23
Kohan : Immortal Sovereigns will be played.
Monopoly Tycoon (even if I have to borrow someone elses PC as it disagrees with mine)
Cricket outside.
Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri is *so* on - we need a 7 player game - and everyone to have had at least a half hour practice to make sure they don't get eaten by worms or sth at the start ;)

Afty
20th April 2004, 11:24
Allegiance now that it is FREEWARE and we can distribute to everyone.
How about some Soldat

Afty
20th April 2004, 11:35
OK gents, it's time for me to propose a very old, very retro game that is still quite simply AMAZING.
Mech Commander
Not mech commander 2, not piloting mechs but instead taking in a group of mechs on a defined mission to either attack or defend an installation, or to fight to the death.

This game is SERIOUSLY good, and has a fairly distinct style of play that I haven't come across since.

Anyone got/getting the Japanese version of Four Swords for the Gamecube? This would make an excellent StratLAN game. I'm not carting my Gamecube over, but we can bring a couple of gba's and Gamecube link cables.

20th April 2004, 12:45
Farcry - Yes please
UT 2K4 - Oh yes (Assault or Onslaught)
Monopoly Tycoon - For those that have it ...

Comedy Warcraft 3 - Afty and Strych building homes for the poor

Homeworld of some sort?
I will be playing some bf1942

Non Gaming - Outside Football / Frisbee

Return of Poker Win with Psym's chips borrowed by NJ?

Considering it's a longer event, do we want to look into the possibility of trips to the outside world? (film, sports, strip joint etc.) These things have to be organised in advance or they never get off the ground.

If people want to squeeze in as much as possible, as this kind of list implies, then we may have to look at enforcing a timetable of some sort to make sure everything gets done. I know this means you might not be in the mood, but otherwise one activity takes over and sucks up aaaall your time. (Ahem, invasion, ahem)

Generals: I left the keys to my Humvee behind in there the last time I - quote - "reamed Wizzo with a patriot until he was more hole than man". I want to go back in and get them, this time as the nuke general - So many bunkers the map looks like it's got acne. :)

Also, can we have some NFS:Underground? I still remember playing so much drift at StaffLAN that my joypad thumb blistered up for a week afterwards. Much fun.

Enough, More may occur to me later

Ryv

Afty
20th April 2004, 13:35
Indeed, a timetable would rock - I might knock an "unofficial" one up actually, but frisbee and football are weather dependant, so perhaps some kind of flexible timetable? I'll think of something, but the best LANs I've ever been to have been those where someone has put the effort in to get large groups of people into one game for a while...

Nice to see another Mech Commander fan on here - you're right the sequel was mediocre, but the original out-rocks Tenacious D. Ooooh, the nights spent until 8am playing against Americans in their evening because there were only about 4 regular UK players (that and stomping over the yanks was damn good fun).

While they had the best power/weight ratio, the mission based scenarios (and the weight restrictions) tended to prevent people from abusing this too much...

Gunsmith, can you check something? I just installed MC to check the XP thing, and while the game does work, if I click on Multiplayer I only have the option of "Serial" or "Internet" - my "Network" button is greyed out.

Im wondering if it's a directX issue as MC uses DirectPlay 5.2 for network, and we're on directplay 8 now.... MC Gold used 6.1 which we might have more luck with if 5.2 is incompatible with 8... ?

Don't bother with ANY form of scheduling (except maybe external event gubbins). Just get a huuuuge tick list, and put it on a wall so we can tick things off as they get done. See how many we can get, I fear we'd need weeks to get EVERYTHING we're mentioning :)

DDR - the DDR pc of love and win will be ready for SLAN, but needs some form of projector/viewing device

Settlers 4 HUGE game - can anyone sort it out so the game doesn't de-sync? Much love will be given if so.

Pizza Hut needs doing (cheesy tunnels of love for Liz and Muldoon)

Some kind of fancy dress part of the weekend would be amusing, like tarts and vicars, or nerds and geeks? :D

Ryvita
20th April 2004, 23:11
Oh yes, (Iron) Dragon Boat Racing...

To explain. This is interesting little map usage that Andy and I came up with that allows a competition in Generals without PvP.
Two players, load up the iron dragon map and arrange thusly:

1 * * *
2 * * *

Where 1 and 2 are the two humans and all the * are random hard armies. The humans team up so you can see what each other are up to, leave the computer players un-teamed up.

The objective of the race is to be the first to get to the other end of the map by eliminating the three hard opponents on your side. You're not allowed to interfere with the other player's side and you can't leapfrog and just kill the guy at the end. The win condition is that you have a unit standing on each of the spaces where the computer players command centre's were.

Tend's to make for some fun games as people overextend themselves trying to rush things and get scuppered when they find a US superweapon general at the far end :) or a %$^:! hax stealth GLA player.

Get practicing.

Or, annoyingly, the first person you run up against is a powerful contrast to your own army and you end up fighting away for ages while your 'teammate' strolls on laughing all the way :\

OR EVEN WORSE, you rush the holy hell out of the first guy, then the second guy decides to press on straight through you and you then get stuck in a war of attrition

I don't know if you've tried Kohan or not, but if not then you should. While there is some "base" building it's the opposite of C&C style base building (centralised, sprawling urbanisation) and is instead about territory gain, and defending disparate positions...
In combat, while you don't micro manage your units (they cast offensive and defensive spells automatically, and you CANNOT control that) constantly, there is certainly some management to be done pre battle, in deciding your formations, posture, and maneuvring to be able to flank the enemy...

Of course, you're going to learn this hard when BFC take me on at Kohan... :)

Nothing, really. We can get 35-odd of you around the screen just with the equipment we've got. OTOH, if you bring a ton of PC USB, Xbox and PS2 pads, we can plug them alllll in. Seriously. We've had 60 pads plugged in so far, with plenty of capacity left over - we just run out of people first!

Afty

Your brain will overload, but that's just the beginning. TBH I was a big time FPS player in the days of Quakeworld and Tribes, but I'm almost exclusively Strategy now...

Afty
30th April 2004, 11:50
Yup, a big game of Allegiance at StratLAN would indeed be relevant and historic. The small seating areas and high concentrations of good gamers at StratLAN means we've had our best games there, I think about 24/25 a side at one of the summer FISC events once, with enormous playground pickage outside and some epic games...

Mamacita
30th April 2004, 12:14
All these games you're going on about, are they mostly strat?

Afty
30th April 2004, 12:16
Allegiance is a spaceship FPS, but Kohan and Total Annhilation are Strategy (pure)

Zakalwe
30th April 2004, 13:32
Run away from Kohan, it is the bad crack.

Wait until Kohan:Kings of war is released, then we'll see.

Allegiance isn't going to happen (really, it never does these days). However 40 a side Joint Ops is a definite option. Also more Trackmania than god intended, lots of competitive unreal games, a nice dose of TA, C&C and possibly RRT3. Some SMAC, and some CIV3 for Lucifa! :)

It's going to be a busy weekend and that's just the games...

If you used the auto patcher it doesnot work and causes this problem. Uninstall then reinstall and patch using the patch on ftp.
I had this so i'm speaking from experience.

ok will try thnx Lyn. :) ok now seems to be running ,now to praccy :)

Afty
1st May 2004, 11:01
Hmm, that seems rather strange, but then I've never used the autopatcher as such, only the direct EXEs...

Also, check the README file, there are some command line options near the bottom of it, so you can run things like:
kohan.exe -cooperative
And many other settings if you are troubleshooting your video card. It might help in this instance to set your desktop resolution to 1024x768 (cant remember the colour depth, check readme file).

lyn
1st May 2004, 11:14
No it is the auto patcher afty. It only patches 36 files when you use the patch on the ftp it patches 40 files.
Hence problem solved once ftp patch is used.

Kohan 1.3.4 autoupdate 'issues' are caused because the game installs both the English and Polish TGW files then goes into meltdown when it tries to load both simultaneously. Putting the local_pl.tgw file into a separate folder named 'Polish arse' or something similar fixed the problem for me.

Afty
1st May 2004, 12:19
Aha, excellent, I never knew that.

I have both the 1.3.4 patch here which was the "default" for a long LONG time (read year+) which is fine for play.

I also have the 1.3.7 "current" patch which contains some minor fixes and balance issues, but tbh we can play with whichever is most stable (Doc is the only person I know who now has problems running it, so I'll have a look at his install at Strat).

phil
10th May 2004, 11:45
The trick with bvark is not to ever let him have goblins. He has a tendancy to strap explosives to them and lob them at you. Play as blue, have a lot of counter spells and wait until he runs out of cards ;)

Aardvark
10th May 2004, 11:48
Do not get me started on your 'worlds most annoying thing, ever' blue deck... :)

Ryvita
10th May 2004, 12:10
Oh my. We're all obviously psychically linked! I was at Zak's at the weekend and we came across his and Phil's old decks. I hadn't played before. The conversation ran something like this:

Ryv: "Oh look M:TG. Haven't played that before, is it fun?"
Zak: "Yeah, kinda..."
Ryv: "Care to teach me then?"
Zak: "Oh go on then. Get the beers in."

Followed by about 6 hours of play, rabid land destruction, excessive health regen, Hax use of artifacts and crazy weenie rushing.

Rar. Another new addiction to swallow my entire life. I was playing a pure green deck with strong regen and some big hitters (basilisks rock your world)

Zak does land destruction and direct damage with a Red/Black and has evil, evil tendancies (Puppet strings, Pit trap and Royal assassin anyone?)

I'll be buying some decks of my own as well though I doubt if I can get enough to avoid having to borrow some of Zak's as well. Bring it on, I might even try a Rabid Wombat attack for a laugh. :)

Ryv

kalleth
10th May 2004, 12:26
i normally play red/blue with lots of counterspells and defensive creatures, a full 4 capsise cards and instant damage.

Along with a few artifacts. Urza's come to mind :P

but i'm out of practice -- maybe i should start building a deck for SL..

Zakalwe
10th May 2004, 12:27
I actually managed to kill Bvark with a rabid wombat attack yesterday, he had 2 carapaces and 3 instil energys on him, letting him hit for a lovely 10 damage, regen twice, take 14 hits and attract a fissure almost immediately...

He served his purpose though, as Herr Sykes was finished off most embarassingly by a scryb sprite the next round :)

He may point out that he won the other 3 games however :)

Clearly you're some form of Blue card whore :) Although Psym may be able to give you a run for your money in the counterspell department.

Four games took about 30 minutes. We don't have to spend Njoroge/Aardvark style eternities thinking about how the game works, and neither of the decks could be described as 'in it for the long haul' (mine had 35 cards!).
