View Full Version : I'm moving to Lebanon

This might come as a bit of a shock to some people, but i20 is going to be my last LAN. :(
I've been offered a job working for UNICEF for 5 years in a small villiage in Lebanon. UNICEF are running a porject there to get schools set up in some of the more remote villages and i applied for a position teaching PE and basic sports in one of the schools.
I dont know exactly which part of the country i'm in yet but i know they're all remote and a lot dont even have electricity so i'm afraid when i go in September this year this could be the last you'll see of me for a while.
AFAIK we get 2 short breaks a year - one at christmas and one other week when we choose. I could take this week round the time of an i-series but the cost of coming home may be too great.
I decided this is what I wanted to do because ?my university course is a mess tbh and i thought i'd do something worthwhile whilst I was able.
I'm gonna miss everyone here and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the good times and fun ;)

I doubt it :(
they can pass messages on but they wont have internet in the villages - they may not even have electricity!
i'm not quite sure what i'm going to find when i get there tbh...

We've been discussing this for the past couple of months now. I'm glad to see you've been able to come to a solution which takes into consideration the money you've already spent on university. The remaining loan money will provide an excellent springboard to this opportunity and I think it's a truly wonderful way of making the most out of a difficult situation. I wish I were able to do something like this, perhaps at the end of my degree I'll do something similar. Truly noble.
Clan Beanz will miss you, and I'm sure a lot of others in the community will feel the same way. Of course we'll need a party when we've finished our uni exams, something in the early summer. Cheers for everything. Let's just hope there's basic internet access where ever you wind up. :)

Congratulations!
I look on you with newfound respect and admiration - I've found myself keen to do something like this for years but never built up to actually getting off my rear and doing it.
Hats off to you boyo (what the hell is a PC geek doing teching physical fitness???) :)

Okay first of all, anyone who knows me will *know* that me teaching PE is the biggest joke in the world. I cant run 5 metres without coughing up phlegm and blood.
Secondly Rocketknight was in on it and nobody spotted his stroke of genius by finishing his post with the words "wind up"
I have to say though i am impressed with the amount of people that believed it and wished me well!
Though I do have an intention of doing some volunteer charity work abroad at *some* point i would really need to be in a better position than i am now - and yes my uni course is a shambles tbh but i cant really back out now  ;)
And I do feel slightly guilty now about ppl saying well done becuase i'm not actually doing it  ! but erm.. yeah.
Just to take away my guilty conscience i do do a fair amount of charity work - just not in Lebanon!! But still.. sorry to dissappoint!
/me runs away to Lebanon to hide!!

There was one thing that struck me about this: I didn't twig the whole April fool's thing. I just felt it totally impossible by the fact that probably NOBODY on here could be parted from a PC and Net connection for longer than a week without turning into a gibbering idiot.
But it was certainly a good one :)

LOL Well done :)
Unfortunatly I also in my job, do a lot of work for UNICEF, and the situation you said you'd got was either so out of date or never even exsited - good luck next time luve ;) (PLD Mark and Alex though!)

Hehehe, that's what working a 13 hour day does to you. When you finish, you should go straight to bed :)
Though the fact that I've been considering doing something similar for years probably made me feel it wasn't quite so far out of the realm of probability ;)
Give me 5 minutes and I'll come up with three more brand new excuses! ;p

it's entirely plausable that i decided to spontaneously drop everything and become a PE teacher in a small village in Lebanon.....

To be honest dude, the fact that you (obviously) think it's so far fetched from reality says alot - there are thousands of people who do just this sort of thing every year, all over the world!
Elbonio
1st April 2004, 16:52
still... it is a little unlikely isnt it :p
especially posting it in the rants/raves forum at midnight of april fools
;)
but yes you're right it's not totally far fetched
I heard a really good one on the radio this morning - There are some arch bridges near where I live - the longest of its kind apparently - anyway its quite old and on the radio this morning they said that McDonalds had boought two of the arches to put a massive "m" over them ... ie the golden arches
Afty/silk75/bonkers - this is the Stockport arches btw - over the M60!
loads of people believed it, despite the fact that this bridge is like so protected that they wouldnt let anyone breathe on it

an aprils fool made the front page of our local paper, they claime iestyn harris, who used to play for warrington in rugby was making a return, someone had edited a picture to show his head on mark hiltons body,m and ent it out, one fo the women from warrington wolves club spent 5 hours on the phone to various media companies cos they thought it was true. now they are hunting for the person repsonsible who phoned up the vclub the next day to apologise anonymously (sp? too tired)

I'm not going to dignify this with a real response.
This isn’t an April fools joke!
On April fools, I put signs on peoples back saying "hello my name is mark" when their name actually ...is mark and I tell them I'm going to do it so I don’t offend them.
This is just OTT.
