.. to be installed in the cyber shop..
At the moment I am full of a cold, so I have 2 or 3 days at home, to do some games research :)
Anyway, I am looking to add some new games into the shop when I take it over, and Savage was on my list, as is CS2, HL2, and a few others..
So today, I downloaded the demo, and I have been playing it all day.. and just now I bought it online, downloading it now as I speak. (£29.99).
But I cannot say i will be installing it within the shop, its just too .. teamwork based, and in a cyber getting people to be that organised for that long, just wont happen, I am sure of it.
Most kids we get in just want to load up and start blasting, BF1942 they like, and DC, as well as Warcraft, but Savage is just too much like Natural Selection, and that bombed.
Most kids play for 50 mins, they want to join a game, load up and kill, they like CS because no matter how the game is going, they can join, know where they are, and start blasting, having someone comm and instruct these kids is just going to hit a brick wall.
Savage is a great game, it reminds me of everquest a bit, but with a leader and teams, but it also reminds me of Allegance.
Now here is a thing, i loaded up Savage demo this morning, played a few games, found an empty server, and started a 1 player game as comm, to get my feet, after a while someone else joined the other team, also a newb, and we spent a good half hour just learning, chilling etc..
Somone then joined my team. within 3 minutes had voted me out of comm saying "learn to play first, then comm".
And that is exactly why this game will bomb within the shop.
Kids do not have the patience for this game, i suspect that this game will need people aged 14 or so to really get into the team work aspect, for the shop, the kids will load up, and just ignore what comm says and run around like idiots..
So, overall what did I think, well I liked it, i liked it alot, as I say I just bought a copy via online dload. And no doubt in 3 hours when its done, I will enjoy kicking someones butt.
however, I did find the research per team (in demo) a bit limited with only 3 levels. What would have been ass kicking, if the game had been like Populous 1, where you start as cavemen, but can upgrade to tanks..
Now that would have been just pure vanilla, and that i could have sold to the kids (play it, learn it, drive a tank etc) but as it is, with just 3 levels, I find it a bit limited.
Also, i am unsure on builder cap, maybe somneone can help me out, i noticed you can have a maximum of 10 people (builders) but does that apply to full game also.. a few times it restrcited the game a bit..
I think that Savage is a great game, but I found that certain parts of it were taken from other games to the extent I was wondering which part of Savage the games writers actually came up with as an Idea.
Comm chair - Allegance, NSelection
Warrior, rail guns- Q3, UT2003
Building houses - out of virtually every resource management game going..
Bow and arrow - predator (N64 game)
in all, I think savage is too much of everyone elses game, and not enough of its own, but I am hoping that the variety of maps, and the availabilty of mods will push this game a lot further than it currently sits at. however I dont think it pushes enough to get into a cyber shop, where every game, has to pay for itself 3 times over, per year, per machine, to be worthwhile installing..
For home users, Im loving it, 91% left to go on Dload...
