From http://www.halflifesource.com/
"Our exclusive visit with Gabe Newell and Valve Software did confirm that only a SMALL PORTION of the source code was taken. This is different than most of the reports. The entire source was not taken. Straight from Gabe Newell"
...
"By the way, just because a little bit of code compiles doesn't mean that a person has Half-Life 2. It means they have a small portion of it and that's all. "

Well, according to http://www.bluesnews.com/
"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition."
APRIL!!! FFS!!!

and on April the first they'll release a statement:
"APRIL FOOL! You're all mugs, there is no half life 2 it was all mock ups, hahahaha we're great, you all suck donkeys".

Jesus. Sounds like Gabe Newell is the kind of guy who would go to a friends birthday party and eat all the cake except the cherry on top then say "But I only ate a small portion..."

That's weird, because he looks like the kind of guy who would eat all the cake too....

Has anyone read the .nfo from the "Anon-beta-patch1" archive? It's quite damning... He points out the e3 traptown 'issue' where the door is kicked open, that the source code that was released is exactly what valve are using at the current moment, and to not tell the public the state they are at in regards to a release date is blatantly abusing their trust.
etc.

The leak is old stuff judging by the amount of room objects missing compared to the demo. Even if he is some '133t h4x0r' it doesnt mean the guy knows what he's downloaded.
What I don't get is the hacker says Valve stated that there are no scripted sequences....which he never. He said in an interview that there is "less" scripting due to the high level AI and that if you left the whole game to the AI it would be a mess.
To provide high level entertainment all developers will always need some form of scripting.

I refer you to UFO : Enemy Unknown (1994)

Probably the best game ever made, had tactical squad action sequences more detailed and intricate than *anything* since - and no scripting.
It *genuinely* puts modern day games to DESPERATE shame,

Ok I realise this will sound like im backtracking but I only really meant development of FPS games.
Honestly never heard of the game though

Go and buy UFO:Aftermath which has just come out. It's a modern remake of the first UFO. Personally I don't think it's as good as the original, but it's still a damn fine game.

It's fun, good and quite addictable yes, but it's missing about 50% of the originals features - some of the best stuff like:
The ability to enter UFOs "in-map" so you could surprise the enemy, blow holes in the roof and enter via jetpacks etc.
Buildings : the ability to use buildings and windows to your advantage. Particularly the horror of having to enter close quarters.
Better controls for manufacture + research.
Base building + planning.
Better aliens. The enemies in UFO were amazing, each one distinct with their own tactics, abilities etc.
DEFORMABLE terrain. Come on developers, get with the program!
All in all though, Aftermath is great fun.

Also I'd like to point out the E3 was one big fake by Valve.
Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the
door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?
To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that
THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no
such thing as a much better release in Valves network!
To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how
much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything
just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.
Thats what i read on my favourite 'demo' site. The last bit suggests more stuff may be leaked soon.... ??

nah, he claimed at the top that everything they had was already leaked.
I guess he's referring to internal communications that show Valve was bull****ting everybody, and don't really have a leg to stand on?
Valve have:
1] Released one decent game with its only real strengths in storyline and AI.
2] Failed to release TF2 despite getting it to the point where it won awards at shows when previews were given (RING ANY BELLS???)
3] Failed to release Half Life 2 on time.
4] Managed to mess up Steam extremely badly.
5] Cannot secure their own servers but expect people to trust them with their credit cards.
6] Seem to think an authentication system should sit on only 1 IP address, globally!!!
I'm very VERY sceptical of Valve, and have been for some time. I do wonder if the internal comms will be so damning that people do jail time for misleading investors?

Completely agree...
This whole story is boring me now and its almost as if the thing has been released sold lots and now we are waiting for another game. The hype, the media and the general fook ups have made me feel 'worn out' and waiting for another game in the sense of when it does come out i wont be interested, asuch :P:

Why do people do all this crazy ****?
yes the games gonna make RavenShield look like Wolfenstein 3D but theres no point in ruining a great game by leaking its source code and delaying its launch, thus making it longer for the actual thing to come out...
in other words, the tard who done it has spoilt it for everyone

That's a bit of a definitive statement... my opinion is that it's going to be a pretty big let down... and I know quite a number of other people are expecting it to be really poor too.

One more time for the people...
The delay has nothing to do with the code leak - it's just an excuse. The game was never going to hit it's release date anyway, we know this for a fact.

that's fact?! What about the E3 trailer (released months before the theft) that showed more complete levels/models and better AI?
PC Format this month has some up-to-date accurate info
At the end of the day you're entitled to your own opinion....even if you are wrong :)

If you'd bothered to read into it, you'd have found that most of the AI was scripted - some of the levels were "demo" levels not going to be in the final game.
Many companies mock things up for E3 that are never in the real game. Example, there's a scene where an entity kicks open the door. Someone ran that part of the leaked code, and found that if you shot the entity dead, the door still opened on time! Scripted sir, not AI.
On one final note, Can you tell me which "game" won the E3 "Best Action Game" and "Best Online Multiplayer Game" FOUR YEARS AGO?
Yes you guessed it right, that little known gem from Valve Software : Team Fortress 2.
Please, before people go spouting off about how great something or some company is, do a little research. You'll find Valve have *NEVER* hit a deadline in their life and have cancelled more products and ideas than most companies ever release.
Valve made ONE good game around '97 - and I'll bet half the people who made that game what it was are no longer there. Since 1997 *WHAT HAVE VALVE DONE WELL*?
Someone please answer me that - in the last 6 years what superb things have Valve released?

Care to back that up with some examples/links/proof to prove your side of the story?
I've posted well supported, well reasoned arguments, you've posted nothing of the sort, but your post attempts to make believe we're on a par.
POST SOMETHING THAT INDICATES YOUR ARGUMENT MIGHT BE TRUE.

I'll have to decline that invitation as I can't be arsed to go back though endless websites that I've been reading over the past few months just to prove my point.
I'm happy enough with what I know as I'm sure you are. At the end of the day neither can be 'proved' right or wrong - so whatever.
