I know Atari did a post in the HL2 forum, but i think this subject deserves a place in the most active section of the mpuk boards!
HL2 source code leaked yadda yadda:
Catch the full story here http://halflife2.net/ , worth visiting the forums on there aswell, loads of good reads.

Sorry but I fail to see the need to post it here as well. If someone's interested in Half Life 2 then a) they've either read about it on the headline of a 3d game news site, b) they'll go the HL2 forum.

As a non-HL game player, I find this whole situation laughable. Take this quote from halflife2.net for example:To whomever it was behind this crime against a company that has supported us over the years better than any other before them; it looks like you're on your own. It's only a matter of time before you're caught, and you will be.Given what I know of a minority of players in the Counterstrike community, I am not the slightest bit surprised that some of them have broken into Valve. I would have given the situation some credence until I read the following quote:Writing cheats is one thing. Reverse engineering out how to write them is another. But, breaking into a company to steal the code is not on. I work for the software industry myself, my sympathys are with the Valve team... This is rich indeed coming from "one of the industries most despised and well established cheat developers"... you all know him better as Joolz. Yes, the same guy who was one of the admins during the Counterstrike tourney at i17. While making a public announcement about his position is to be commended, the posting has unfortunately caused a laughable scenario to degenerate into a hysterical farce.
So some people have the source code for HL2. Big ****ing deal! It's not as if they're going to compile the complete game up from the source code before it is released, are they? They would still need the graphics, models, meshes, textures, audio and music to reconstruct the game. All people have is the source code, and while it is of interest to certain people (programmers like Joolz for example) a vast majority wouldn't have the first clue of what to do with it.

There is more to it.
They release the game like it is, we'll see a flood of cheats and hacks from day #1.
Secondly, it has the source code for several major 3rd party software applications, such as havok - physics. Valve have contracts with these companies, and as such are likely to be sued over breaking them.

sure: code --> cheats
but code != game. the actual game is the levels, sound, graphics, etc.
and the code can usually be separated into 2 parts, engine and SP game / MP game. the MP game bit would be the hacked bit

I think it is important to post things like this here.
This is a forum for discussing "things" and that can mean anything. Seeing as most people reading the MPUK forums are gamers of one sort or another, the news about, possibly, the biggest game this year is news worthy and worth discussing. While you may or may not like the game others will feel they want to dicuss it, maybe more of the fact that source code was nicked. This is not just someone copying a CD its source code.
Having that will allow them to develop any amount of cheats and cracks. If you're unaware of the consequences imagine this. Someone gets hold of the source and rewrites the client. They create some clever tricks that tell the server whenever you've been shot that a millisecond before you actually moved, so you never get shot. There are lots of possible uses.
AFAIK no one has cracked the encryption used by the HL keys, however having the source could give someone the opportunity to do so. However seeing as its now generally available the thieves must know that Valve will rewrite compromised parts of code so that any cheats or cracks won't work.
It's interesting people think this is a stale subject and not worth posting here...

It's a thread about Half Life 2
Half Life 2 has it's own subforum on the board
Please can an admin move to this the HL2 forum?

Andyf, why so bitter? Its a general topic forum, the HL2 forum gets hardly any traffic etc, i thought people might miss it. I for one rarely visit the main site of mpuk, but visit these forums alot...jesus its not like its pointless spam.

And since I don't play HL or it's mods, I wouldn't have noticed this in the HalfLife section of the foums.
Defcon, your comments about releasing the game "as is". I have the feeling the release date got pushed back for a number of reasons, and this code leak just underlined it. Since the date has been pushed back, the chances are that Valve are rewriting whole sections of the code to prevent obvious cheats and patches working from day 1.
/me still remembers the day 1 patch for Tribes 2. Ridiculous.

Fair enough.
I use another BB where a lot of posts are in the wrong place every other day, it just irks me a bit.
