I jsut got my new ASUS 5224A CDRW drive. However im having weird problems....please help

Ok i loaded it up with
IDE1 Master: Hard Drive
IDE2 Master: DVD drive
IDE2 Slave: New cdrw drive

It had an error installing the drive and under properties in the device manager said 'Cannot start device'

Now before anyone says i have made sure cdrw was on slave and dvd drive on master.

So i swapped them round and it didnt work again (dvd as slave, cdrw as master). Basically I can only get my new drive to work when i unplug my dvd drive so its the only one connected to that IDE cable as master

It also takes a while on bootup to detect IDE devices now....

Please help i need to get this working before i go to uni in 2 days

I could put it as hard drive master dvd slave and then have cdrw by itself as master on IDE2 but id prefer it if i didnt

I had a wierd problem I had a IDE HD on Primary Master and CD On Seconday Master it would take an age to detect the devices ... I then added (just this sunday gone) another harddrive as the Primary Slave and a dvdrw as the secondary slave ... now all devices a found in a split second and it gets past post so much quickers. My addvice is trail and error

I recommand moving the dvd to become a primary slave and leave the cdrw on secondary master. Also check the cables, I have had a few problems recently with rounded ide cables on asus boards .. dont know why being rounded should make any difference but it obviously did!

stupid short ide cables....gnona have to move my dvd drive right down so the cable reachdes the HD and the dvd drive

I think that should work but i dont understand whats the problem in the first place.

Also if the drive shows up in my computer and it doesnt work it says ' I/O device error'

i find that whenever you put 2 cd drives on one IDE you MUST make sure the jumper on the back of the drive/spade is set to slave (on the slave device obviously)

it doesn't seem to matter if its slave to a hard drive, but when its a slave to another cd reader it fecks up unless the spade is in the right place.. look at the label on the top of your drive. it will tell you were the spade goes for slave devic..

unless of course you have already done this.. in which case i would have the dvd as master 2 and the cdrw as slave 1 on the HD.

yeah its already done

I think im just gonna have to put one drive with the HD but that means shifting the drive right down to the bottom slot

Is the master at the end of the cable and slave in the middle?

ok ive saorted it now so it works:

Primary Master: HD
Primary Slave: DVD drive
Secondary Master: cdrw

that works fine although it seems to take forever to boot on the windows xp loading screen. Bit strange. Oh well 4minutes to burn a full cd \o/
