View Full Version : Nvidia Pixel Shader 2.0 woes

did a bit of sniffing around in regards to the det 50's and thier release date and stumbled across an interesting read.
the article was dated back to the mid/end of july
Nvidia confirms PS 2.0 driver problems
Meltdown, showdown, decapitation
Apparently, some shaders 2.0 simply do not work making Nvidia's claim that this card is DirectX 9 hardware puzzling, as Pixel Shader 2.0 is one of the essences of DX 9.
Subsequently, Nvidia staff at the conference agreed the shaders are not feeling very well, and that the recent drivers are quite buggy. But hey! They run Quake, UT and 3Dmark just fine.
We are sure that this carelessly honest Nvidia boy will be decapitated for this statement but we are sure that this will brought much more attention to making things work in future revisions.
As you might expect, there are not many ways to test these shaders as DirectX 9 games are still far away in the future. Ironically, the same shaders run just fine in ATI Radeon 9800 class hardware.
having got a hold of the beta DET 51.75 i decided to give them a whirl on something that has the option of rendering PS 2.0
i tested them using HALO on full detail across the board at 1024x768 as it uses the PS 2.0 feature to render its advanced textures
44:03 and it was piss. barley got out of single fps.
45:25 saw an improvement in PS 2.0 rendering, still died when rendering large scenes ie outside
51:75 (betas) was huge increase, while there are some major descrepencies, here it flies when rendering PS 2.0 but theres room for improvement.
im no anandtech or tomshardware but i think its not all doom and gloom for us nvidia users that everone seems to be making out.
if anyone wants the 51:75 betas find me in mirc :)

Seriously if nVidia can turn this whole thing on its head with a driver release without crippling detail etc, I'll be impressed with them for actually 'getting on with it' and not sitting back and bitching about XYZ not being 'right'.

I'd be increadibly impressed as it would be virtually impossible given the differences between the hardware of the r3x0 and nv3x.
while the ati slides here http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA2NDg1OTI2NEFrQm9pUVd0ZU5fMV83X2wuanBn and the next one are simplified they are actually accurate. ATis chips are just that much more powerful at shading.

But this would be more than a miricle though wouldnt it!! it would be a set of drivers that morphed the headware into growing more pipelines! lol
Face it gunsmith... just coz you have a 5900U... there ****!! i did the same, i brought a Voodoo 5 5500 for about 250quid when it was out... and after about 6 months it was worthless with hardly any support, so i binned it for a geforce 3.
ATi clearly are winning the battle at the moment.. infact the main man at nVidia said at a trade show the other day that nvidia are keen to get away from the 'Were only into graphics' that everyone thinks. they plan to become less graphics based and strengthen there nforce mobo stuff and video software. clearly they know they are struggling. i cant imagine the FX sales are anything nice to look at!

**** that!
voodoo 5s were quality! i bought mine for about £100 - best card i ever bought - lasted about 2 years. Fine when 3dfx went bump there was no support. But i lived on 3rd party drivers for about a year!!! Played everything pretty good

yea i was on 3rd party for ages too...
but you had to change drivers for certain games... Windows XP hated the voodoo cards..
and when i look at it at the time i brought it i could have got a Geforce 2 GTS... which would have been alot longer lasting.
both cards were 250quid at the time... i stuck with 3dfx becuase i had always HAD 3dfx cards.. even thought the geforce 2 GTS was clearly a better card!
so dont get the opinion of... well ive always had nVidia so im always gonna have nVidia as ATi must be crap if ive always used nVidia!!!
basically.. just get the better card at the time.. which everyone has to see is currently ATi Radeon's
nuff said.

****monk... Lol.
I have to say my Voodoo 3 lasted me ages. I "upgraded" from a Geforce 2 MX to a Voodoo 3 3000 and I never once looked back. My next upgrade was the Geforce 4 Ti 4400. Which, tbh I don't plan on upgrading for a long while yet.

I upgraded from Voodoo 3 budget to a won GF1 DDR and the first thing I thought was how dull the colours were.
