they've now said that DooM won't be with us this year. although the engine looks spanky, is the game going down the tubes, the way of john romero's daikatana? i hope not, but you know id have/will licence their engine to a lot of people who can make great games

the q3 engine was pretty good in its time, as was the q1 one (and the hacked q1 one for q2 :) )
however, for doom 3, the engine is damn nice, but its not as impressive as the hl2 engine (or at least, from what ive seen)
still, good graphics dont make a good game, we have to wait and see how both do :)

Actually, Doom was a great game - Quake 1 wasn't too sloppy either. It's just the next two efforts (Q2, Q3A) that have failed to rock the single player world, but that has primarily been because id worked out how much they could make from engine marketing and made games solely to sell the engines.
It would appear that they are once again concentrating on a Single Player experience, and that they are trying to resurrect the original "don't play with the door closed" feeling of Doom.... it remains to be seen if they can get back into the swing of things after a long break from groundbreaking single player, but Im confident that Doom 3 will be a good game.
I also think HL2 will be pretty good, but I think so far that the hype is greater than the product.... though I expect their Source engine will spawn an amazing number of mods and probably be a competitor to ids new engine for Doom 3.

Neither. "Theme Theme" is the next big thing. You get to play a simulation of a simulation of "The Sims". Through a intuitive interface your control a hand (modelled in jaw dropping 3D with true physics) to control a virtual mouse to play the sims on a virtual PC. It's as close to the Sims as you can get without buying the real thing! Comes with a bumper pack of pro-plus to give that real Sims (sh*t yet somehow addictive) feeling.
I hear a team are already working on a mod that lets you play on a virtual XBox version. Just imagine it - why play the Sims on PC when you can get this and play a simulation of the XBox ported version on your PC?!? It's exactly the same as the original "Theme Theme" except much harder to control and with two extra job classes.
Oh, and I vote for HL2 - but only because it's coming out first and it's engine looks more versatile than Doom 3 (which looks like it's concentrating on interior only).

i think id days of great games are over, if John Carmack and John Romero came back and made Doom 3 together HL 2 imo wouldnt stand a chance, and from what ive seen the doom 3 engine looks better than the Half Life 2 one..

I'm sorry, but did you play Daikatana? John Romero can go shove his various overpriced supercars up his oversized arse before he comes back to id.

Indeed, Ion Storm just went to show that Romero was nothing more than fluff at id.

If doom is just jumpy jumpy scary scary and no plot then tbh imho it can smb. Both engines are spectacular but I'll prefer the one with a storyline and plot that makes be want to keep going till I finish.

Not all of Ion Storm though :)
Specter and Carmack, now that would be a hell of a team :)

like i said before, ive seen more of hl2's engine, so i cant compare the actual looks of the two engines, but what can be done within hl2's engine is amazing (physics engine etc)
hl2 certainly seems that it will spawn the more popular (to be lisenced for other games) engine because of this, and we should see some good mods for it (alas, we'll no doubt see cs on it, which will probably suck as much as before :))

From what I've seen it seems the Doom 3 engine is more about very high and fine detail, while the HL2 engine is about the physics and overall look. Then again, this could be because I'm comparing the Doom 3 alpha which just contained interiors (i.e. you're looking for detail) and the HL2 videos (which lack fine detail but show more of the game). So maybe I'm talking b*ll*cks.
^ That's what you get when you think while typing :)

iD only make games to show off their new engine.
Their games don't have to be that good cos the engine licenses is where the money is.
Although it'll still be better than Half Life 2, but then so would watching paint dry.

i don't care how nice the HL2 engine looks, it's not going to stop me from shooting the scientists
although for some reason i do feel that i'd like it more than doom 3, weird that....

hmmm.... 10-1 against. one of the side issues to this is is the production standards of games companies.
<rant>
first up: "done when it's done" - in no other comparable industry would this be tolerated on the scale that it is by gamers.
shipping unfinished products - ever had a game that needed a patch before you could run it properly? ever had a car that needed a service before you could run it?
one fallback for these should be to the gamers though, we must be the secondmost vocal group of moaners when it doesn't EXACTLY fit our expectations, next to windows users. and we overhype games without prompting.
Case1: Daikatana - Hyped and a big letdown
Case2: DooM 3 - not really that hyped, we've just had a few (lot?) of tech titbits from carmack, the rest is down to us.

Doom 3 will ROCK
HL2 will ROCK
why is one exclusive of the other? buy both ffs....

Pah
Doom3 will rock
HL2 will ROCK!
HL2 will be one of the most successfull fps of all time whether you like it or not, even if it is horribly pants in single player there will be enough mods and addons to make it a worthwhile.

HL2 will be just as boring as the 1st
So what if it looks nice?
SWOS (Sensible World Of Soccer) never looked nice but it's amazing to play.

I think he's saying that about most modern games. EA Games (Challenge Everything) seem to be worst for this. BF, Generals, heck, i'm sure there's loads.

But surely you should still see it as a great game despite this. BF was designed primarily for online play and even unpatched it was pretty special in terms of gameplay.
Also in no other industry are the publishers as demanding. Developers could spend years tuning up a game to near perfection but becuase of costs and time constraints this often isn't tollerated, therefore shoddy poorly finished products are shifted onto the shelves which require patches to get up to standard.

Preaching to the converted. BF is the best game out there atm imo
