I had my third annual appraisal at work today, all went very well, super fun, big arguments and tantrums, lots of contructive feedback... then they told me that they felt I was a little opinionated...
Me? OPINIONATED?
Christ, it only took them three years.

lol no way - i was told exactly the same thing at my appraisal only a couple of months ago
but then she contradicted that by saying i lacked communication skillz based upon the fact that i dont say much in meetings
i dont say much in meetings becuase i'm bored out of my skull and like to just sit and drink tea whislt everyone argues.. not becuase ilack communication skillz ffs
but yeah i cant believe it took them 3 years to figure that out about you Afty
i got it after about 2 hours of joining the fourms... ;)
the thing is though you may be opinionated but your opinions contribute loads to this forum so you can tell your bosses that elbonio says to shove their appraisal up their arse....
and by the way i would pay lots of money to see video footage of that appraisal - would probably be quite amusing to hear some of the things you said!

In a recent review I was told "I get the impression that in meetings you often purposefully take an opposing view in order to encourage a debate". Luckily my manager understands my motivations and this was down as a good point :)

I've been told that many a time.
It seems to be a problem with management. They have to remain more opinionated than yourself otherwise they see that you have a potential to undermine their authority amongst your colleagues.
As for meetings, theres nothing like a spanner in the works. I'm a big spanner at most meetings. Think diversely, not in the box (to use management speak).

at the last meeting i suggested that we have a PG tips tea bag dispensing machine installed and that the pepsi machine downstairs be swapped to coca-cola instead
it was on the agenda so i dont see why everyone got so annoyed... ok so it was me who typed up the agenda and nobody had a chance to object to it begin there... and ok so i did actually say i was going to talk about "staffing issues" instead but hey it was only a little lie....
needless to say it didnt go down too well

i suggested at the last meeting we get training and certification in .net.
That caused more of a laugh than the regulatory joke.

The most amusing thing about the whole affair was what was said to me after the appraisal this afternoon.
Prior to doing the face-to-face you have to fill in a 12 page form, submit it for your manager to review, and then you "discuss" the form you filled in at your appraisal.
When my manager got mine, he asked if I minded if the Managing Director also sat in on the meeting.... I found out this afternoon that they both thought (due to what I had said in this 12 page form) that I was so pissed off that I had found a job elsewhere, and was going to use the appraisal as the place to hand in my notice!
All worked out well in the end, loads of progress, and some good plans to put alot of bad **** right.
I get criticised for speaking bluntly, being opinionated and honest, but I honestly find I get more done, and so do the people around me, when I and them are forthcoming and truthful and not intimidated. Pussyfooting around people who are easily hurt and/or insulted seems to me the best way for a company to sit still and eventually die.
