Interesting article on the register..
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/31635.html
Basically to prevent addition to online games, Thailand is going to prevent access to game servers from 10pm to 6am every night.
Lets hope the UK government dont hear of this, or they might think its a good idea as well !

Our government might be a pain but we do have a decent ammount of freedom. I doubt very much that our government would attempt to bring in something like this.
Maybe Thailand are doing it because all the lady boys are playing games rather than on the streets and tourism from business men is dropping because of it.

What I fear is if they brought that law here and not worded correctly it could also effect Lan Parties as Game Servers could also be the ones not aloud to be on at them times makeing Lan Parties well... useless.

Are you sure?, if the government want it, they will find a way, doesnt matter how expensive you'll pay with increased taxes. Does the government care about riots?, I doubt it, gamers are still a small minority, riots can be controlled.
Do we have a decent amount of freedom? are you sure?, the government want to introduce ID cards soon. If you choose not to have one, you might find it very difficult to "live" in this country.
Anyways, back to ban on late night games, of course, our governemt hasnt implemented this, and chances are they never will, but there is always the "what if"..

It would never ever in a million years become law in any western country. It just wouldnt happen.
I can see it happening in the east though... i mean China blocked Google ffs
how plausable is it though? Surely you can't stop people connecting to European servers?
Though the ping time to a European server from the far east would be pretty much unplayable i imagine
And lets not forget we're talking about the old Authorities vs the online community again and we always stay one step ahead.
It's a bunch of beaurocratic idiots against the cream of the internet community... and those with skillz will ensure that they find a way around the curfew and gaming will carry on for all.
The authorities never have a chance against "us". they're trying to fight against a large number of people, in their own element who have the power of communication at their disposal. The online community will always win becuase we can do something that no other organisation or social group can do - we can talk and communicate, share ideas and organise ourselves instantly, secretly and accross geographical, racial and relgious boundries.

Thanks to the European regulations on Human Rights we could probably challenge any such law in the courts, although as people say it is unlikely to happen in Europe.
Thailand isn't so lucky, although they do have more problems with gaming addiction than we do. I believe Thailand had the honour of the first CS related death, with a young man of 21 dying of a heart attack after a 16hr straight session.
We don't appear to have quite as high an incidence of gaming addiction here, so it may well be less of an issue.

They don't have to shut down the local servers they just block the ports, at the ISP end, used by games to stop them working altogether.

The reason they are doing it is that the kids should be working the brothels from 10pm to 6am. Not doing so will adversely affect the tourism industry there and the economy.
</sarcasm>
I think thats more of an issue that they should deal with...
