Hi,
For all you fileplanet subscribers you can now grab CS1.6 using the steam update program, available on fileplanet.
Apparently Im getting the update at 250kb/s a sec, Its a shame the update engine doesnt tell me..
1. How long its going to take.
2. How big of a file it has to download.
Infact it tells me NOTHING! other than the apparent speed, which is rather annoying tbh.
Also rather annoying, is the fact I can launch the game, but becuase i havent got the update, I cannot play, it's like it think i want to sit around WAITING for the update and do nothing else on my PC..
Mmmm, apart from that, go grab it, it also has bot support :p:

I take it you never used steam the first time around? :)
Exactly the same, not knowing on time or size of files, but you didnt have the speed before
I think i'll give it a go after some more mirrors appear. :p:

Nope never 1st time around...
Starting to discover why they called it "steam".. Must have some reference to "steaming pile of crap".
After waiting for the update, I got it, YAY I could play CS1.6.. Except evertime I went to a new map it would download it.. Mmmmm I thought..
Then I discovered, on my D drive is Half-Life with CS1.5 and on my C drive it has gone and installed CS1.6. Great 400mb of my C drive taken up, with a game, I have already on my D drive. Grrrr.
Deleted Steam, retrying now... Why do these developer think they are so fricking clever, I wish to install games on the drive/directory I choose, and I DO WANT THAT CHOICE!

what steam does at the moment (or did when i tried it when it came out) is to duplicate your CS (and other various HL mods) folder so not to disturb your orgional configs.
Then when you want to play it will update it. After you dissconnect/close steam, it will the delete the files it downloaded, which is why it re-downloads everything every time.
This is only because it is a beta. When it goes final (and then a requirement for all HL users) it wont duplicate the mod folders, and will keep the content it downloads.
Steam could be a very nice tool when it's finished, i just wish they would get it sorted and release it properly. I know HL2 is a big priority, but they also want to have steam as standard for it, so they had better get it worked out first before then.

IT
IS
A
BETA
...and I think it works well at the moment, buggy yeah but its a BETA what u expect, works ok for me since day one.
I got the steam beta when it first came out and there where no mirrors, it took about 6 hours to connect lol
Got it again the other day and there are lots of mirrors and the updates download fast usuaully, although the first time i tried to play aztec it took an hour to download it.

Is it just me, or is Steam a forerunner to a "pay to patch" system. Where you cant get the new version unless you pay valve. Steam wouldnt take much changing to bring it around.
i got steam from here the other day:

I think Steam works well and is a good idea, keeps away the 56k modem scum as well :)
I just think at the back of their minds that they are thinking of a bigger picture in the end, ie pay to play, advertising and stuff, i hope im wrong.

Cheez, It has got to be the forerunner to Pay to Play, otherwise I cannot see the reason for it.
keeps away the 56k modem scum as well
I hope you said that in jest, there are still a lot of people who have no choice about the connection they use. Why should people be denied playing games based on connection speed or where they live?.
More worrying would be how it *might* effect lan parties. If the content downloads on demand, how can you play the game on a LAN?. Sure you can hope you've got all the available content, but you've got to hope everybody else has as well. Maybe the publishers have thought of this as well, and as an additional income stream sell a lan master server (software) to the lan party hosts..
Ooo the possibilities...

Sucks for a modem user. Maybe I don't want to download the update in Steam. Maybe I want to... ...USE A FRICKIN' FTP SERVER AND GET A PATCH THAT I CAN SAVE ON MY PC.

the plan for steam is to provide a way or getting games without going to a shop...cheaper
u just download them after paying valve for them.. or in the case of the free ones just download them

It has now gone public. Someone at Multiplay might like to get the 'Steam installer' on the FTP Server (only 550Kb ish).
Let's see how good it really is ....

And why is the MPUK CS1.6 server running the same map constantly?
ADSL Guide servers have em all running including Airstrip and the new Aztec so it's not cos the maps arent available.
