it is essentially a normal ide drive but has special firmware on it or something so unless you get the xbox chipped it cant have another hard drive, and in windows it can read the size of the drive but cant access it for some reason

The Xbox does have a standard hard drive but it is specially formatted for Xbox.
People have put them in their PC's before and formatted them to their OS. Although you do need a special tool to format a hard drive back to something the Xbox can read.

The site below also explains why you cant read from the disk on a pc and also a good piece on installing a new hd in the xbox

don't forget though, if you modify your Xbox it wont work on Live afterwards.

No true anymore, with the more recent mods, they have a switch to disable the mod, so they will work with Live, although, you never know when MS will release an update to look for it though :(

I think with how strict Microsoft are on modding it won't be long before they get Xbox Live looking for any change on the board.
There has to be something that gives away the switchable mods that can be detected.

The xbox games can be played online without live though, using either
gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com)
or
xb connect (http://www.xbconnect.com)
i havent been able to try it myself yet (some little bastard stole halo from me) but i've been told that it works great.
[edit]Also i was told you can use the xblive headset over XB connect, which is nice[edit]
