but which one is the best?
The Titan with its 12k of armor?
The Sabre with its slightly faster handling & forward firing turret (apparently)
or The Eagle? with it being the fastest handling VHF there is.

you'll probabbly all disagree but the titan can withstand so much flack that you dont need to be that good at flying to win a fight.

well i think i'm going to get the eagle.
Well i went from a hammerhead to a Titan, then found the turning to be slow, so i tried a Sabre, granted the forward shooting turret is pretty cool, but the handling isnt that great either.
Im now back in a Titan, and the turning issues arent that bad once you learn to fly it properly.
A tip ive found usefull for flying the Titan, when doing sharp turns i.e. following an enemy, slow the ship down and you will turn quicker. Alternativly you can press and hold X i think, to go into reverse, quickly whip it round and boost away guns blazing.
Take some practice, but works okay against computer, PvP is a different story

i think of it like this:
the eagle has much faster manueverabilty (sp?) than the titan or the sabre. And the eagle can hold a lvl 10 shield just like the titan/sabre, now.. how often does your shield go down? and, how quickly do you die without your shield?
if you think, 12800 armor is what, 5-6 hits with two diamondbacks?
9900 armor (eagle) is about 4-5 hits with two diamondbacks
and thats diamondbacks alone, let alone say two nomad cannons and two reavers, thats what 4-5 hits max with titan, 3-4 with the eagle, so, in theory the titan buys you one, or two shots. obviously thats perfect, direct hits, but with a titan, its harder to evade perfect, direct hits than it is with an eagle.
so u decide, an extra one or two hull shots, or a heck of alot more manueverability.
I found, after much testing of all three ships, the eagle was the best, as both the sabre and the titan are way more sluggish, therefore i could get around and behind a titan or a sabre so much quicker, then simply follow it shooting it, and kill it.

problem with stopping in mid battle is when you have 6 or more people attacking you at once ur shield can get halved (when fighting vs ppl like bounty hunters in omicron sectors)
so if you fly chasing someone, loose them off the side of ur screen, stop to turn to find them, then get your shields halved, not good imo. why bother with that when you can keep your thruster on and turn as fast with an eagle? hence not loosing any shield :P

been freelancer for some time now, I have to agree i thinkk the eagle is the best ship. I mean a lvl 10 sheild restores quickly, and almost never goes down. The bottom line is that the Titan has a lot of prestigue (sp?!?) but moves like a lorry with no wheels. Also, if you have the titan you should be at a sufficient skill lvl to be able to pilot your ship in combat without taking too many hits.
I found with the titan the best way was to hit X quickly and im turning and then tap booster on and off till im turned, just found it quicker.
Finished Freelancer now, its got kinda boring tho :( nothing left to do, need to be able to start factions now tbh :)

i've just got the titan after having the saber and all i have to say is that you just have to fly it better and you can win a fight just as well. X and then boost turns it quick enough to not get hit if your good.
havent tried the eagle yet. Might do when i have a bit more money.

if you want money get the Dromedary (red hessian base in magellan), although you've just go tthe titan so i assume you pissed off the hessians becoming friends with the corsairs.
In that case get the Humpback. You can get it on new Berlin, 250 cargo space and do trade runs of i think its engine components from Berlin to Cambridge, if im wrong then diamonds to leeds and beryllium on the way back from cambridge to the ring :)
usually get about 700000 credits for a return journey

if youve got the titan u can do a straight swop for the eagle, but if you decide against the eagle, you will need to earn money to buy the titan back.

You are utterly ignoring the ability of the sabre's turret to fire forwards; this *is* very important (eg: I have a turret which does summat like 3.5k damage to a sheild per second).

i dont see what all the fuss about turrets is. With good weapons a turret dont make THAT much difference.

it the question of either having it nor not having it, on a titan its the latter, if two ships are easily matched, the extra weapon slot and added manouverability of a sabre will a) reduce the number of shots needed b) allow me to stay out of the crosshairs of the other chap :)

But the fact is most ppl can get in all the shots then need before even getting close to the other fighter.

Really? How many of the lvl 38s on the server have warp cruise disruptors? And out of the other half, how many can hit a ship dodging around at 300unitthingies? Its advantageous for me to be fighting at close quarters with my ship due to all the close range weaponary (cannonball missile / sunslayer torp / ripper mine) so that extra gun and manouverability are perfect :)

i tried the sabre, as i said, and yes the turret was usefull, but with diamondbacks and cerebrus do u really need it? rather get an easier faster aim with my big guns than have a turret thats slower to aim :P
Seeing as ive lost my character on the server now due to a reformat of my pc, i think that i will give the eagle a go when i get to that stage
