well, i been looking forward to eve online for a while having read a short review on the game and 2 hrs ago i handed over thirty hard earnt gbp's at my local Game store. I'll be returning it tomorrow when i wake up cos:
1. the cd key was already in use and the support team said there was nothing they could do.
2. mebe cos i never played an mmorpg before, i was unaware i had to pay to play - this sux cock imo. what's worse is that it says so on the box in tiny little writting! this should be stamped in big f**koff letters on the front of the box!
3. it took over 5 mins to get from 1 page to the next on the EveOnline support website (I'm on a 512 ADSL link). and i couldn't post my complaint because i've still not had email varification via email for my forum password (1 1/2 hrs later).

do not waist ur money on Eve online - save it/put it away for the FL expansion pack or doom III or a pissup or something.

well, that's my litle troll out the way...

1.

If the CD key is in use you _will_ get another from the store for free. Buying mmorpg game without valid cd key is like buying a car without a motor. It could be that ie. some summer trainee has nicked the key from the box and used it himself. You have to understand that the support cant tell if you bought the game with invalid key or if you are just someone trying to "hack" in another persons account.

2.

The downside of mmorpg's is the monthly subscription fee and many require credit card for payment. This still scares many away BUT in every major mmorpg's out on the market now (Ultima Online [old and outdated but still holds a fanatic player base], Anarchy Online, EverQuest, DAoC, EVE, Planetside to name a few) you will get first month for FREE. If you still want to play after the 30 days you will be charged. (usually 5$ month).

You have to pay to play because the mmorpg's (unlike ie. FL multiplay) are on static massive servers that are online 24/7 every month, every year. There is support team that keeps out cheaters, constantly works out bugs, adds new things etc.
Also the servers hold hundreds of players at the time. ie. the mmorpg that I play (Dark Age of Camelot) has 3000 on peak hours and even at 5am about 600 players online.

The mmorpg's are designed for multiplay only so there is much much more to do than in singleplayer games multiplayer options. In mmorpgs the character building takes much longer so unless you know what your doing or you get outside help there is no chance that you can "finish" mmorpg within the first month.

3.

Could be just a some router down somewhere between you and the site. Unlikely that its just downright crappy all the time.

Point in this ?
Try out the free month, you just might like it.
You really have no idea what a multiplayer game is before you try "massive multiplayer online games"

(Never played EVE myself and I doubt ill subscripe to it as im allready playing one mmorpg.)

regardless. that game is going back, and i will advise anyone who asks not to buy it. the support was ridiculous, the website sucked and if ur gonna charge people to play your game after they've already spent money buying it then it should be printed in large bold font on the box, not tucked away amongst the trademark/copyright small print. i've never played/bought an mmorpg beforeand had no idea u had to pay. as for the keycode, i never had any probs with q3 or any of the unreal game s that require them, and there must be a damn sight more of those sold.

If the key code is gone its not the games/developers fault.
Blame the store. Also the website runs perfectly when I checked it.

I agree to it that the system requirements/billing info should be clearly market on the box but its purely a marketing trick. Too big and you lose customers, no text you get sued ;)

Id still encourage you to test mmorpg's because there are many to chooce from and there are loads of them pouring on the market.

But anyway its your money so onlyone losing is the game store.

(btw. the key code is kinda different from Q3 etc. ie. your whole personal information is tied to it. Your name, address, payment method and the likes. You cant just generate it like Q3 key code)

frustrating and a ripoff. mmorpg's are probbaly great, but i'll not waste money on another.

Well i was always disuaded from these games by the monthly fee that has to be paid, i can understand why but id rather play a regular singleplayer rpg with a multiplayer bit on it, neverwinter nights, icewind dale, baldurs gate, dungeon siege, games like these are worth playing for a traditional rpg game, but i agree, i guess a months trial would be good to see if the game is any good, but i sure as hell wouldnt pay £30 for a game i can only play for 1 month, unless i cough up more cash, needs some rethinking in my opinion

this is why i am signed up to the eve online beta testing team

If you didn't do enough research before popping down your hard earned 30 quid on a game to discover it was an MMORPG with a monthly fee, you're an idiot.

Caveat emptor and all that - I'm certainly not going to listen to the opinion of someone who knew nothing about the game before purchase and has never played it.

Once upon a time children and parents would return computer games to shops complaining that they didn't know they needed a computer to play them. These people were laughed at, because it was par for the course that buying a tape or cartridge or oversize floppy disc alone required something to play it on.

In the same vein, it is par for the course (read : absolutely standard) for MMORPGs to have ongoing periodic payments for the use of their servers, I'm with bvark on this one - it's your own fault for not knowing this.

why should i have known that, afty? your analogy isn't particularly well thought out. unless, of course, you know everything?

This IS Afty you are talking to jest3r... He at least thinks he knows everything. :)

For the same reason that parents should have known "computer games" needed a computer to work in the 1980s - because it's obvious with the tiniest bit of research.

If you aren't researching products before you buy them, you deserve EVERYTHING you get.

The world is populated by hundreds of millions of idiots, these people always have more than enough kids to ensure that the idiot gene is always passed from generation to generation.

For this reason, any game that requires monthly payments regularly should be clearly marked.

Just because you know, you should not assume that the rest of the world does.

Treat the world like idiots, because, when it comes down to it, most of them are idiots anyway :)

And idiots end up wasting their money by buying things they haven't researched. They pass on their money to people who are more deserving, that's how the world works.

Protecting idiots is not a good idea.

Does anyone know anyone that has tried Eve? It looks good. I also disagree with the policy of paying to play, but if it means getting a more dynamic experience then it could be worth it. It seems to have the things missing in Freelancer, plus character development, ability to hire wing men, set up bases etc. Could be good. Someone write a review !

At first i didnt agree with the pay monthly policy that has developed. However after some thought you have to realise that the amount of effor the developers go to, to maintain the servers is very high.

Also, the fact that games such as Planetside can have up to 5000 people on a server means the bandwidth used must be phenomanol (sp)! They may not just be asking you to pay for an extra profit, dont always assume developers are the evil baby snatching organisations we tend to think they are :)

Also, £8 a month isn't exactly gonna break the bank now is it? thats three pints on a sunday afternoon :p

I bought EVE the other day. God i wish i hadnt...

It has to be the worst £30 i've spent on any game, EVER!.
The problems, lack of support and shoddy tutorial are one of the many problems in this game.

I may of forgiven it for these if the gameplay was actually good. It's not. It has to be the MOST boring game i have ever played.

Endless hours of flying around mining for asteroids and then returning to some space station to process and sell the ore.

This will go on for many hours. The gameworld is just so dull! Of what i've seen i have seen nothing but black space and planets.

And as a n00b to this game i had no idea what to do in the game. The tutorial was almost no use to me. It is the most boring game ever released!

I cancelled my account after 3 days of play. It isnt a game, it's one big chore. Plus the way one moves in the game is horrible. Point and click. Simply click in the direction you wish to go and it will then change course. It's terrible!

Another BIG BIG problem is the fact that in the vastness of the EVE universe [5,000 systems] there is a mere 3,000 players at peak times! It's simply not multiplayer most of the time. You'll find your self not having seen a single person for many hours if flying a reasonable distance away from one of the n00b starting points.

Word of advice:

Do not buy this game unless you enjoy watching paint dry.

Of course this is just my opinion...

Shame i cant take the game back.

Did i mention this game is boring?

Aha, many of you might think the game looks good. Yes, this is why i bought the game. I saw the screenshots and the things that you should of been able to do.

Sadly it just isnt much fun once you've started playing.

Hell even if the game was free and i didnt have to pay monthly i still wouldnt play it.

Storme
20th May 2003, 10:51
If you like i could go into alot more detail. However, the game simply isnt worth my time, or anyone elses for that matter.

One of the bugs stopped me from being able to continue the tutorial. So i was left with the knowledge of how to mine. That was it! Just think how boring this can become...

Any questions?

Planetside on the other hand is a good game. It has it flaws...but i believe they are working on this. For instance: You can now win! Yes, you can attack their sanctuary! New vehicles are being implemented as well. One of the main reasons i stopped playing during the beta was because you just couldnt win. It was kinda pointless. This one change has meant that i may just buy it again :)

It's a good game, especially if working as a squad. Just dont expect to become some pro like you would of done in CS or quake.

Still...tis a good game unlike EVE which cant be classed as a game as such.
