I saw screen shots on the FTP at i15 of Allegiance... and I also saw one of my friends playing Freelancer... They looked identical... is this the same game?
Or is this one of those mmorpg things where you have to pay monthly based on the same game engine?

Neither.
Allegiance has got to be 3 years old now... if not more. It used to have a subscription arrangement, but its no longer supported by microsoft and is now supported entirely by the community for free.
It is a multiplayer game only.
Freelancer is new. Its primarily a single player game, tho there is a multiplayer option. There is no subscription charge. The graphics are definitely better, but the multiplayer aspect does not have nearly as much structure.

Thanks for the info :) so is Allegiance free now then? can I download it from a site somewhere? or do I have to go out and find it? I guess if Microsoft aren't supporting it they won't be selling it anymore...

This is the issue that many people have faced. As far as I know, you can't download the game legally but you also can't seem to buy it either. :/
Allegiance is very popular at i-series for those that do have the game.

That's good :)
I downloaded it... but I've no joystick and I seem to be a bit crap on the keys...
Maybe I'll see if I can dig up a joystick for the next LAN.
