With the rapid growth of the online gaming and clanserver service, we're finding ourselves putting increasing numbers of servers into our rack space. Rather than be all dull and name them "MPUK1", "MPUK2", etc. we've started off by naming them after lord of the rings characters. Currently we have:

Frodo
Bilbo
Legolas
Gandalf
Boromir
Elrond
Pippin

We need more :). Ideally a list of 20 will keep us going. So I need you people to rack your brains and list all the LOTR characters you know of. Here's a few more to get you going (taken from the Intro to the Two Towers on the website):

Samwise
Sauron
Saruman
Gollum
Aragorn
Gimli
Theoden
Wormtongue
Eowyn
Arwen
Faramir

Any characters you can think of, no matter how minor in the book or film :)

Tom Bombadil
Goldberry
Strider (Yes I Know it is still Aragorn, but it is a different name)
Gildor
Deagol
Smeagol
Underhill
Fredegar
Barliman
Nob

And thats just from the first few chapters of fellowship.

I cba to look through anymore to find out how they r spelt

This is really just a way of saying "Look how many servers we have now" isn's it. :D

But how about this for a different idea, naming them after different dictators in history:
Amin
Hitler
Stalin
Pot
etc.

Trust me, it's about 100x easier than using silly names.

Melkor - The big bad, although not mentioned in the film
Morgoth - Elven name for Melkor, mentioned in TTT

Two races

Numenoreans - Men helped in defeting Morgoth (mentioned in FOTR)
Valar - What you think it was randomly called Valinor! TTT

Two places

Yes, but try saying that one while under the influence of alcohol or in need of sleep - let alone type it.

I like place names for servers, and characters for clients (but then, there all servers)

I assume the workgroup (ok ok, im unashamedly windows based) is Middle Earth :)

simple names that relate to their posistion purpose and physical location you need.

As for names, D0c handed you all new arses

KermitTheFrag

My naming scheme:-

location-purpose-os-id

location - MR (machine room) ... DD (design dept).

purpose - DB (db server) ... FS (fileserver) ... AD (active directory)

os - 2ks/2kw/2k3/xp .... obvious

id - 1-n ... where servers are clustered in multiples ie our main SQL Cluster is

MR-DB-2KS-1
MR-DB-2KS-2
MR-DB-2KS-3
MR-DB-2KS-4

before anyone complains about using the OS name, it's easier when you are migrating as you can run both SQL clusters side by side :)

From experience NAMES ARE BAD. You need a chart to remember the purpose of the server and where it is.

Personally I agree. As long as you don't move them you'll be fine ;)

I DO hope half pint and short stuff are going back into the rack with those exact names.

You could also have Short Pint, inspired by Newbury Racecourse bar staff.

Or alternatively just call your smallest server Joey...
