Digital Anvil have released a demo of the soon to be released Freelancer.
This demo dosn't required a subscripton to Fileplanet, unlike the demo released last Friday.
The 150Mb file, "offers the chance to explore the entire Liberty System, giving access to more than a dozen bases and five flyable ships. Experience the trading system, sample the open-ended nature of the game and immerse yourself in the intense combat of Freelancer today"
You can download it <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/games/freelancer/downloads_05.asp">here</A>

I've had a bash on Freelancer and in my opinion the mouse controls work well and I'm actually glad, because I can't really be arsed using a joystick in games. Graphics are nice and stuff, and combat is fun.

OMFG!!!!
There is NO joystick support at all....you have to use the mouse, which for someone who plays a lot of flight sims is unfogivable.
They better add joystick support and release another demo or I have a feeling the flight sim community will be in uproar.
Also this has been developed for a X-Box port, that is obvious :(

This game is quite impressive..
Things I like....
Space feels populated,alive... There's radio chatter, there are traders with escorts going from and to places. Rogue's attacking space stations, other ships. Makes you feel a small part of a larger picture. Atmosphere ..
Multiplayer I reckon this game could rock.
Control system is very simple to use.
Things that bother me...
Control system is very simple to use.
3rd Person ship view, it works, but it does make you feel detached from the action.
Trading is too simple, there is no risk involved. Not only will the game tell you if the price you are paying is a "good" price or not, it also tells you where to get the "best" price for selling the goods. This is info. you should have to find out yourself by visiting places.
No radar scanner (well not that I could find), thus to find something you need to select it in the list of ships/waypoints.
Are their illegal items in the game ?, I couldnt see any to buy.
Cutscenes are very pretty, but I reckon they will get very boring very quickly.

There are illegal items, and I got randomly stopped and searched by the Liberty Police. I hid it all in the glove compartment, so it was all OK though.

RAR 50 tonnes of Narcotics and another 50 tonnes of fruit and veg to hide it in!

Did anyone else have any sound issues?
Most of the time, I could not hear speech in the cutscenes. And I noticed what seemed like inflight radio messages that I could not hear.
A way to skip some of the tediously repetative scenes (such as talking to peple for rumours) would be nice.

Yes yes yes... in game speech in some cut scenes (and whilst flying) was missing, i assumed it was cut from the demo.. I might be wrong..

I assume the fact that there is absoloutly no joystick support bothers noone then.

Played the demo, by the time I got to level 2 I wanted to play the full game. At first I thought mouse control hmmmmmm but it actually does work v well, had the same prob with the sound voice etc, guess that will b sorted in the final game. If this is just a very small part of the final game i.e ships etc then it will be worth the wait. Although I did used to like landin on planets meself in frontier, ah well.

keys were fine for that, but these guys seem to have integrated the mouse v well into space sim. wp imo.

I'm not saying that they shouldn't of made the mouse control, I actually agree, WP to them for opening the genre up to the masses.
What I ment was that it was a bit stupid not having joystick input for those who have a joystick and wish to use it (e.g. me). I just think the option should be there to use either.
