Do we have to guess what game you're talking about?

Buffy

If you post CS problems in the CS section of the forums then someone will help and you aren't likely to get abuse.

I don't know... It would still be tempting RocketKnight. ;)

Usually pl and high pings would indicate something outside of your control (namely the route to the server you are playing on).
It is worth doing a trace route to the server you are playing on and looking for spikes within that route (tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in a dos prompt).

The reason it could have "suddenly" happened is ISPs and the like changing their routing tables and shunting you around different routes....

Worth a look anyway.

well the ping isnt constantly high it just seem to spike when i am in combat, I will attempt to aim at some one and the mouse will stop responding.
I think it more likely client side.

aye, ntl are conestently doing this to me, me spikes came back last night, again.
every 5 seconds my net graph go's summat like ___/____/____
so when it shoots up then starts back at bottem, i get draged backward the amount of time/progress that the spike was.
i get fed up of going round courers twice and clicking reload twice,
i also get summat that i have come to get used to.
_____|"""""|____|""""""|_____|"""""|_______
every 10/15 mins my net graph does this meaning what ever i do in this time will proberbly not really happen and if im moving then ill be shunted around a fair bit, it in fireing my gun i just have to start spraying cause the bullets get lost, i garentee if im in fiorefight when it happens ill die (unless im against a noob or summat)
what i have come to do is expect it to happen at any momemt, then once it does im hopefully ready for it, and ill run as best i can and hide for 6 secons untill the 3 "ntl f*ckups" have sorted them selves.
anyone else get this problem?

Buffy : check your "rate" (I assume CS has this, as it's based on the Quake engine which had it). A very low rate (set accidentally, or by a friend as a joke) can cause the problem you describe.

Also, as Culture suggested try tracerouting to the servers you are playing on:
at a DOS prompt:
"tracert gameserver.multiplay.co.uk"
or whatever the genuine address is of the server you're trying to play one. Post those traceroute results here if there are any spikes.

yea hes tried that m8, the tracerts are pritty good for his connection,
his rates are standard. eg
rate 5000 (i think, not sure about 56 standard rate)
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 20
(update and cmd rates may be each others values, i always get em wrong way round lol)
but yea, the choke obivously is summat to do with the connection, but i think the generally bt, cause he lives in a remote area,

but yea the mouse. imo he need to reinsall since he hasn't reinsalled for about 2 years. and he has alot of crap on there.
full format i mean.

the mouse "sticking" in CS and XP is a known problem. Whether your rates are fubar too is something else.

To fix the mouse problems on most machines:

run dxdiag and turn off sound acceleration in the sound tab
add -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel to your CS shortcut (and gamespy/ASE settings)

As for rates, on 64k ISDN:

rate 7000 (give or take, depending on the line)
cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 30

ahh interesting... this happened to me with CS... and ONLY HALF LIFE stuff.!

back before XP days my isdn connection was very fast.. and CS i had pings of 40-50 solid... but then i upgraded to XP when it was released and i still got low pings but in combat it shot up to 350-400... meaning you DIE!

i changed the rate, latency settings but Never got to the bottom of it! so eventually i stopped playing CS online altogether :-(

interestingly enough though... i then built a new pc! and i using same setting and modem but on a 3X faster pc and new gfx card.. and it seems to work fine now.. i tried it the other day...

i wonder what changed! hmmm.

[edit.]
i would also like to add... back in days i played CS! i went back to windows 98 and it was working fine... just XP caused it! and also when i tried running a 56k it was fine (higher ping but no spikes)
