was a good event, i liked the cozier fbl5..dunno why, the kiddies were annoying and having them play DDR at 4am and constantly coming in and out the doors while i was trying to sleep was REALLY annoying. the DDR would have been alot better with sound that was coming out quietly from a few speakers at the front, selecting a song sound was REALLY annoying too.....erm......thats it.....erm..........the fire alarm bit was kewl.......cold...erm..yeh
was a good even other than that :) my pc is a whore and im hoping to get a new one soon (alienware mmm).
thanks to all the staff
p.s. hope Brain and Paul are ok from their little "accidents".

ddr was too loud, needs to be put down so that we rest of the event can still hear there headfones.
dc++ hub was leet, more of than next time please.
generally thought the event was great, very enjoyable. if the showers could be hot ALL weekend next time, would be great, i hate cold showers tbh.
console kids got a lil annoying after a while, esp late sat night when they should clearly be asleep at home.
but wpgg to all :D

i was freezing my ******** off under my desk with someone elses pillow and a wash towel over me, with the DDR and kiddie giggles in the background and a cold breeze coming from the open door.

This is intended as a quick response to some of the points raised above. More detailed responses to follow...
the consol kidys were anoying but they wont b at the next event
Very true. They won't be. They were only there as a safety net, as we couldn't afford to cover a £500 booking on the hall + other assorted expenses all by ourselves if we couldn't guarentee we'd reach the break-even target. Splitting the cost with another event, whilst also making it easier to get the hall in the first place, seemed an excellent option. I personally would still make the same decision, but would have to be a bit more firm with the pe0ns
also just another thing that pissed me off was the DDR, are you people like deaf of something? it was waaaaaaay too loud i couldnt hear what i had pumping in my headphones
Far too loud, I agree. There was a sort of boundary there between us as FBL Staff and the pe0ns as "TGGW" attendees, depending on what we could / couldn't do or say to them. Similar with the movies on Sunday morning. Thanks to MingTea there...
the DDR would have been alot better with sound that was coming out quietly from a few speakers at the front
Heh, on Sunday we JUST had the lappy speakers for DDR, and it was perfect! I don't know WHY we didn't just do that.
selecting a song sound was REALLY annoying too
God knows why, but that bit it so much louder than the songs themselves. No way of changing it, unfortunately. It's annoying enough when playing at home.
fbl5 was smaller therefor cozier, might do a small event in padworth again for that reason
That's always been on the cards. FBL returns to it's spiritual home to go back to its early days. Stay tuned for details of one of these, and experiance the REAL FBL.
what was with that janitor? wtf "move your sleeping stuff"
Yep, he's been an arsehole for the past god knows how many years. I can only apologise for that, and give you all the good news that he's retiring early march :D
its a great venue tho
It definately has the potential. It's a case of working out how to make the best of the room and facilities available. We're considering differing layouts, and how we're going to use the space freed up by the pe0ns.
also the windows in the roof needed to be covered, as come sunday the light was slightly blinding
The curtains that are usually there have been gone for the past 3 months whilst they replace the windows. But, of course, this being a school, what should take a couple of days takes a month or two. Expect closable curtains by FBL-7.
ok...i *think* that list is big enough to make the staff wonder why they bothered..
No, we know how much our regulars enjoy FBL, and heck, we enjoy it. If you cut out the PLETHORA of problems we had, I would say that I really enjoyed the LAN. Contrary to popular belief (/me glares at Ejacu-Leyshon), we don't run FBL for profit, we run it for fun. And that list of problems is excluding a hell of a lot more. I'm so glad to see that everyone is ignoring the whole "drunken Jonny and the Police" incident, which was unfortunate from what I gather (I was asleep at the time). I'd like to thank the various members of MPUK for their help in that.
So, again, this is only my PERSONAL response to those points, expect an official response to those and many more in the coming few days, after lots of intense discussion. It's nice to see our regulars seeing past the problems, especially those we had little or no control over, and seeing the FBL beneath, and recognising it from our Padworth days. I still reckon that FBL is one of the most fun and most social LANs I attend, and this weekend has reinforced that.
Kind regards,
Paul Bowsher

I'd have to echo whats been said already really.
1) DDR was -FAR- too loud for most of the event, but when you switched over to the laptop speakers on sunday it was fine (although they kept using the same song over and over, which I keep humming)
2) There were no decent areas to sleep. Getting the gym open next event would be outstanding as you cant hear a thing from the hall in there.
Asides from those 2 points the lan was perfect from my perspective, very social and a good laugh. Jacob, I shall be practicing my Corkscrew and own you good next event :p:
The network itself was flawless, with speeds of 10MB/sec+ the norm rather than the exception. There were no power problems AFAIK and no one had any downtime that I saw.
To sum up. A couple of teething problems with this event, as there will always be with a new venue. But overall it was a great LAN, the venue has a lot of potential, and plenty of room to expand in the future. Roll on FBL 7! :D

godamnit ;)
To echo what the others have said, and add my own thoughts
DDR was too loud
Consoles themselves didn't really bother me, they kept the volume down, except for the odd "is that the fire alarm or has a GTA player stolen the ambulance again" moments
Found a nice corner to curl up in and sleep, relatively noise free although having the caretaker walk through at 8am going "WAKEY WAKEY" is highly unwelcome ;)
Other than that showers would be nice, although that was fixed on sunday, when the showers were upgraded to luke warm and actually useable ;)

At the end of the day, i had a good time, i slept fairly well and didn't have too many objections.
I didn't actually mind the PS2 Players too much, maybe make them use headphones and keep DDR music down, but it didn't bother me too much.
The console players didn't sleep, but the teachers were saying they'd do day only if they did it again, which IMHO is acceptable. Maybe considering a seperate hall could be an idea?
My only objection was the tea had bits in it, lol, Oh yes, and maccys were open silly hours

Now I'm actually conscious, a few more things on the positive side
Network was stable and fast
Power was fine
Atomic Bomberman 0wns you as does TA and MM2 (nice to play some of the games I haven't played in a while)
DC++ was a nice addition although I only used it a little
C&C Generals netcode sucks ;)

Some very good points there Paul.
Well overall i enjoyed the event, and can definatley say i will be re-attending in the future.
I can't really say anymore for the points you address above because Paul covered it all so well.
Just remember it's only by getting some things wrong that you eventualy get them right and make it better overall for everybody.
Looking at the FBL-7 plans i can see that it is going to be a fantastic LAN and that everybody should definatley attend for a good time.
I look foward to no console, peons, better enforcment, a seperate sleeping area (Gym Maybe?) Tidier Cables, and no arsey Caretaker.
MM2 owned, as did UT Insta GIB (as always) and saturday night was a very chilled afair which i did incredibly enjoy.
Good work lads, i was happy to be a part of it.

yeh must agree with all the points being made. was an excellent lan, so wp to all who helped getting it to run. network was so fast and stable, and net connection was good once it was up (but still dont know why a primary school has a 2mg line?). had a great game of TA which i havent played in years, and bomberman and amagetron were also very pleasing. Will be buying c&c generals at end of week, altho clearly the netcode will need to be addressed if the same problems still occur.
overall a great lan, thx to all

Hello the teacher is here.
I am totally knackered.
I have read all the comments and totally agree with all of them.
The kiddies were all annoying me at night and if there is to be another event they will NOT be staying over. It is more hassle than it is worth and they were all wasted the next day and so did not have as much fun anyway. An enforced sleep in their little beds would have meant we were all a lot less crabby.
We did try to enforce the headphones rule, but so many of the old portables that they had to use dont have sockets on them, and to be fair they did keep the tvs really quiet.
As Bowsh said, we were kind of relying on each other to get this event going, from a cost and permission point of view. With a successful event undedr our belts (and it was a successful event, even though we are being terribly British, and concentrating on the negatives) we should be able to cover costs with two totally separate events.
Separate events would mean that you dont have to worry about annoying peons and we dont have to worry about wiring ("Probably best if you dont come in the control room for the next 10 mins" - GD) and drunken teenagers vomiting in the foyer plants. I know there was no problem with either, but you still worry.
To end then, great event, glad we did it, lets learn from it and move on to the next thing.
Woodsy
PS looking forward to the video, how's your shoulder brains?

FBL6 was a bit of a downer but FBL7 is gonna b so great. no kidys, no caretaker, curtins, no loud music 2 piss us off, etc, it will rock!
the consol event was there 1st 1 so they didnt no that sleepin over nite was a bad idea etc.
again i say that overall FBL6 was good and enoyed the gaming and the socializing which is mainly wut a lan should b, playing games and enjoing the company of the other gamers etc

Ok my turn ;)
Yeah about the same as everyone else.....
DDR too loud
Bit more sleeping room
Showers hot (bit cold on sat :) )
bit cleaner cabling - no biggie but someones going to kill a TFT sooner or later!
Friday night singing was ammusing
Name game rocked
The kids were not too bad, they shut up once ming locked the lappy, but then I was not in the room all night......
But more game playing could be good seemed a lack of it.
DC++ very good.... licked that....
Maybe a couple of organised games... a CTF or something....
But yeah other than that it wasn't bad....

10th February 2003, 16:04
You thought that was bad! At FBL-4, it really seemed like we leeched more than gamed. One thing about FBL, is that it's more of a lan PARTY than a LAN party. It started off with 15 people who mostly knew each other anyway, and grew from there. It still keeps its roots

I was trying to find time to set it up on the new BF server, seeing as it wasn't getting used. It seems that FBL really isn't the LAN for BF. Best leave that to SL and DL. Shame really, I spent £200 on a new server specifically for BF, and it wasn't getting used. Apologies for the late set-up of the server, but I only just received the machine on the day (Cheers Diz)

OMG! that rocked!!
some strange happenings for a lan that makes me agree with boffy about fbl being a lan PARTY and not a LAN party! /me vaguely remembers long debates with assorted people in the wee hours of saturday
also can i recomend that everyone takes up smoking for the next event because then we can all go out for a fag :D
for me personally the only thing that irritated me the most was:I'm a cowgirl, riding on my... GOD DAMN HORSE. OMFG STFU!!! DIE DIE DIE!!
but appart from that the kiddies weren't THAT irritating but the event would have 0wned much more without them!! i have to say i agree with the notion of tidier cabling, it wasnt a bad job with the gaffa tho :)
that was well worth the 6 1/2 hour journey going back up! changing trains about 20 times, ending up getting the underground in central london!! i love you all and much fluffles and strokeage was had! a huge thankyou to the sex0rs that are the FBL staff for another great event.

10th February 2003, 18:36
ohhi again Woodsy. Thanks for the comments. Were people really being sick in the pot plants?
To try and put a positive spin on this event - I would like to say that I had a great time. Yes, the consolers were annoying - but neither FBL nor any other UK LAN that I know of had tried this before. Suffice to say that I don't think it worked very well, and having FBL as just FBL is what will happen in the future!
So, not being ones to rest on our laurels :p: we are taking all of these comments on board and will be acting on them to make FBL-7 the best yet! 50 people was a big jump for us, and I think we handled it well. The PC LAN itself ran pretty flawlessly - and as far as I can see the only major complaints are:
1: Consoles - We're not sharing a venue again with them
2: Sleeping areas - This was something I should have sorted better and I apologise for that. I had honestly expected the gym to not be a problem - but Bill the caretaker was not in the best of moods this weekend - and it wasn't helped when he found that someone (don't know it it was FBL or consolers) had been getting the fold out gym equpiment out in the gym. That didn't make him and more keen to help us! I shall certainly 'officially' sort the gym as a sleeping area next time
3: Noise - Well, again I apologise. I didn't know this was still going on in the small hours. If i had still been up, or had been woken up - i would have done straight away what Minge did in the end - switched it off and told the kids to FO. It was our bigscreen and my lappy after all :D There will also be no loud DDR next LAN. Sorry. :(
Expect the coverage to be up soon - and I shall also be doing an 'official' responses thread soon. Right now however, i'm totally exhausted!!
Cheers guys for a great LAN!

FBl6 did indeed r0x0r and after reading many peoples small issues there are some i would agree with and others I tbh didnt even notice, such as the lack of gym. If im tired, I'll sleep. But in regards to the DDR, yes I was considering stealing the lappy and running away with it but I restrained myself and settled down to some MOHAA, after getting quite considerably drunk and 0wning the server for a good hour.
Which might I add would seem to have been the game of the event, if you had to say there was any gaming. Sadly there was a lack of MOHAA adrenaline and cries of "kill the jews" was somewhat absent. Although the frequent shouts of "AVE IT!" definately rose some of the good old Padworth spirit. It would be nice to go back there again, since the showers worked, there was no-one else except FBL, and there was a nice field to play our traditional game of footy on.
But tbh as long as it has FBL on the badge, you know its gonna rock.
A big up to all at FBL for yet another well pulled together event! :D
PS. I'll get my photos up and make my little coverage site, anyone who wishes to add their comments, reviews or anything, I'll stick a new post up here soon so you can make your requests.
