I'm stuck in the middle of know where. I had a power cut last nite (lasted 17hrs!!!). Luckily I wasn't doing any college work, otherwise I would have lost it :(
I know u an buy a battery pack of some kind that you plug into your plug socket, and then you plug your PC into the "battery pack", so if there is a power cut, the PC will still be running.
Allowing me to save my data, and shut down the PC properlly (and find a torch)...
Anyone know where I can get one???
Looked on Dabs, but as I don't know what I'm really looking for it's kinda hard :(
Thx :)

You want a UPS
Uninteruptable Power Supply
Several people make them, APC, Belkin, Compaq.... and they can be had quite cheaply.
If memory serves i think you need a UPS that is 1.4 x Watts
I.e. if you have a 400w psu in your pc, and you monitor draws 150w then you need (400 + 150) * 1.5 = about 700va
You can get a 500 va UPS for about 40 quid... and that would probably be more than enough for the main PC.

Ta for that info, but I can't find any that are as cheap as you say :( Any chance of letting me know your sources :D
I'm looking at about a 700-800VA
I've found them for about £200-£300 :( :( :(

you can pick them up on ebay cheap....but the batteries may not be as good as in a new unit.

I'll have to get by without one then.
I'm just paranoid about my HDD, I can't get over the fact that most drives won't screw up like my IBM did :(

yes in the event of a power cut, my stereo, tv, computer and server all continue running for hours joy
Obviously the fact that the server that routes the adsl downstairs isn't on it doesn't help a huge amount ;)

ill give you the link I paide 195 quid for a petrol generator that runs about 15 pc setups for around 30 minutes to and hour on a full tank .... or just enough to boil a kettle.
Im trying to remember what they are actually called something similar to a UPS but a lot more efficient and gives a cleaner supply of power which a UPS generally dosen't.

I read an article on how to do this and im tempted to give it a go. :D
in testing the car batters UPS lasted 2 hours longer at full load than a normal UPS ;)

yea but the UPS plugs into the mains and then to your pc and is being charged up perminatly!
then when you get a power cut it runs off the stroed power in the UPS!
were as i guess the car baterry wouldn't be perminatly connected but just for a supply in a power failure! so whats the point? we talking about saving your pc from loosing information in the event of a power failure/cut!
