Okay so when i play BF with my cable modem plugged directly into my PC i get about 15-30 ping on mpuk server. Now you see i have to share my net connection so am running my cable into a win 2000 pro machine, setup as a dhcp server with internet connection sharing.

Basically now that i am playing (well trying to) with my conneciton going through my server i cant get into any games, it connects, then i get connection problem detected, itll run for maybe 3 or 4 seconds, or maybe a minute with terrible lag, then ill get disconnected from the server.

I havent had this problem with anything else, Halflife anf Q3 run fine through Win 2000 ICS.

Anyone got any ideas? Need help leik.

When you enable Connection Sharing though Win2k it automatically uses DCHP.

My guess is the 2 DCHP programs are fighting maybe.

Hope this helps.

Firstly, it's DHCP :) Secondly, there shouldn't be two DHCP servers, as he's only using one as the gateway machine from what I can tell.

Well, on all the EAUK servers, I get every 2-3 minutes a connection error lasting 4-5 seconds on my screen... and everythings fine again

multiplay is the only server that don't do that

glow_ginga: Are you running a firewall? If so, which one?

OK, let me get this straight. Are you playing from the gateway machine, or from another?

Im playing on my Windows XP machine
which is connected to a hub by a piece of cat5
then another piece of cat5 goes from my hub to my windows2000 machine which is connected to my cable modem :)

Does this happen in other games at all?

no other games, halflife pings like a dream, as does quake3. :/
one thing i have found, is that ICQ has alot of connection problems.

And have you tried running this from the gateway machine? The reason I ask is that this is a recurring problem with games which use Microsoft DirectPlay through a shared internet connection.

Allegiance also had this problem once I believe.

Try using a different router like Smoothwall

I get creditable pings with me and andy playing at the same time.

I use Smoothwall. Its pretty good and can run on older hardware and still provide a nice fast pipe. I use it on a BT ADSL connection.

Its Linux tho, but requires very little Linux knowledge, in fact if you can install a Windows OS, then you can install Smoothwall as it comes on its own boot/install cd and asks you only basic questions.

It only uses about 20meg of HDD and can use old processor/ram too. And because its Linux, less subject to script kiddies using "known" MS exploits. Actually BT themselves try to port scan it more than anyone else >:-(

I've got pretty much the same set up as you; Win2KPro, running a second computer's access to the internet through mine with ICS on my NTL cable modem. The cable modem runs through my USB port, which I know is bad, but it is the only way I can work it with my hub at the moment. I am getting the exact same problems as you describe, with my ping generally being very low to european servers, like MPUK, but suddenly spiking to levels that are literally off the scale. Those spikes are usually accompanied by total loss of control, often running on the spot kind of stupidities. It's not NTL, as I play online games all the time and have no problems with any game, be it FPS, MMPORPG, RTS, etc. It is only with this game that I get that connectivity problem, and I spend my games fearing that "Warning: connection problems detected" getting displayed, especially as it usually happens at the most inopportune of moments, like after bursting into a building full of enemy soldiers.

Unfortunately I have not found any solution to it, other than I have learned that some servers are better than others. I get very little trouble with the MPUK and jolt.co.uk servers, certainly less so than with the official EA ones, so I don't know what is up there. Something else I find that works is to select the servers that don't respond with a "9999" ping when I hit refresh repeatedly. What I do is to search the servers for "<100" pings, and then hit refresh and the ping buttons repeatedly until all of the servers that occasionally return "9999" pings are sifted out from the others. I find that any server that doesn't return that ping will never or rarely give me any connection problems, and those that return it a lot will have me hanging regularly during the game. I'm sorry I can't be of any more help than that, but at least you know you are not the only one suffering the problem :D. Hopefully they will sort it out with the next patch.

BTW, is there a way of booting people with high pings from servers automatically? Because I suspect that is why I get booted from some servers straight away whenever the ping madness starts up. Some servers disconnect me immediately, but most don't.
