bvark

Hi Folks,

IFC will play us on Wednesday at 20:30. Please register your interest in playing below (you must have full retail BF1942). They think they can field a 12 vs 12 side, and I'd like to give some trialists (BGH, Lyn, Catachan and Bootz) a chance to play for at least some of it.

We will likely be playing battleaxe, so try and play it online beforehand ;)

They are #=IFC= on quakenet, IFC_Rowlow arranged the match.

Please meet in #[mpuk]bf1942 at about 19:45 on Wednesday for a tactics talk.

Yes.
yes.
yeeeeeeeees.

I'm home from footie around 8pm sweet.

re: Lyn and Bootz tho - this game is a war. In a war you have to fight and stomach things which might cause consternation. Are we sure women are up to it?

This would be terribly unfair on all the others who wish to join. My personal preference has to go to Lyn but at the same time everyone else has to try out. Its not just a case of 'oh they are good let them in'. We have to give everyone the chance to join.

Could we not trial them later tonight bvark since if we trial them in game we may lose some valuable tickets ;)

lyn (trialing) 1st or 2nd leg
andyf as reserve pending arrival of game.
kbb (trialing) as a second reserve

The map is battleaxe (first level in the single player campaign), which I'll have the server switched to for a warmup early in the evening.
Once again, please obtain and get teamspeak running with a reasonable quality microphone (no speakers bleeding back into it)

Rar!

BattleAxe. Teh Seminal!

Artillery comes in handy here, and can sit at the "lip" of the hill the base (or runway) is on, and POUND the field - maybe a scout to help *if* we're far up the map (view distance not that far) - no scout needed for defensive fire.

Airplanes are cool. I can't recall there being any decent air defence on the map? With tanks coming into the equation so much, one well placed bomb is a godsend.

Tank drivers. We *need* decent tank drivers. Stay on the move when infantry are near, the centre is a big wide open space so you can avoid lots of grens fairly easy. A little inf support is nice, but if we LOST quite a few tanks we need to use the arty to even it up, and have a fair few anti tank infantry.

Engineers - all tank drivers should be engineers. We should allocate these positions before games. Please, good tank drivers only volunteer! You have to be able to shoot.

1/2 pilots
1 arty
3+ tanks
leaves about 6 slots for assault / engie / anti tank - maybe a scout if we are pressuring well enough that the arty needs it.

A *prime* job for the arty is the destruction of the enemy spawn tank/arty/APC - he *will* need a scout for this.

Tank life expectancy is quite high on this map down in the "bowl" arena - make sure we have plenty of engineers in support. Engies can hide in buildings if being sniped/picked off by NME assault, and tanks can stay close to buildings. Engies dont forget to use EXP packs when NME tanks come knocking.

Also we might want to decide a few areas we are going to mine(just over little dips for the enemy coming at us, so they dont see them till too late) and designate these before the game starts, so our tank drivers know...

I am good when using the arty stuff, or perhaps meat !

WildThing

I will be assualt to begin with. Infantry will play havoc with tanks with the grenades doing more damage than the bazookas. I will change as things go on depending on status. I cant scout that well and cant hit moving people when scouting. Maybe someone else wnats to take that job.

On the subject of tactics bear in mind everyone can read this thread

******************************IMPORTANT UPDATE******************************

IF NEEDED I CAN PLAY TONIGHT

afty
25th September 2002, 16:39
We were briefly discussing tactics in IRC before.

Roles for planes, arty, tanks will be handed out pre-game in IRC - the rest will have to play it by ear, though Im sure some tanks will come available during the game.

Remember Battleaxe is open, and assault vs. tank will be hard to hit with grenades, the tanks are likely to be moving constantly/.

Yeah I don't think is working too well.

bvark

So, I'm sure everyone wants to know the result :)

Once again we had some server problems - the server password wouldn't change, so we started a long time late and had some public players in.

It also took a long time to get everyone in because I had to keep booting people. In the knockabout IFC were winning, but once we restarted and went for a real round, we beat them 160-0 or so. We're not counting it as an official result (whatever an official result in a friendly is :), but we will have a rematch.

Thanks to PSym, Wildthing and Andyf (1, 2 & 3, although those of us who came lower down the order also put in a fine team effort to keep the enemy totally bottled up), and everyone who turned out, and waited for a rather disappointing game. The organisation and actual play of the team for the 5-10 minutes of the real game were damn good - we did well.

Lessons learnt (apart from to fix the server) agree a double restart before the match and try and get out-of-game communications between the clan leaders, since trying to organise things with the in-game chat is terrible. We also probably want to play earlier in the evening, if possible.

Lastly also need to arrange a system of command where the commander isn't a close-in tank driver; I had almost no time to get an overview of the battle or to direct people (how much do we need in game command is a different question :-).

I think 2nd place was Lyn.

Apologies to all who wasted time tonight on this godforsaken game. I really believe that given better net and server code, this game could beat UT2k3, but the developers only have their laziness to blame if UT2k3 kicks their arses. Hopefully things will improve with the release of a Linux dedicated server

I WAS 2ND!

At least now we have the server working properly, at least thats what Wizzo sed. So now can we please have on proper organised match which will be counted? I was well pissed off last night as bvark will tell you.

On the debate on the commander thing- i dont think it is needed. Everyone has the common sense they need and everyone knows where the show map button is (i hope). Thats all u need. As well as 1337 skills but we will ignore that for now.

Well done to everyone...i believe lyn has shown her worth in the game and should become part of MPUK. I may be stepping out off line saying this but i just have done anyway:D

And btw I WAS SECOND FS!

Well played all (well staffed too aka bvark :smlove2: )

/me nods to IFC :icon12:
