O dear, like nearly all FPS games before it, BF1942 isnt as playable with a modem like I originally thought.

Last night it was terrible, when nothing is happing, the ping is nice and apparently low 120 (for a modem). However, the real truth was when trying to shoot a moving target.

I think the other player musta had a secret teleporter about his person, he was standing still next to a hut, I shot him (from a nearby stationary position myself), and he didnt die??. WTF??, I thought, next thing, he vanished, and it appears my bullets hit the wall behind where he was standing..

Nex thing I know, Im dead, shot by the same player, who had moved, seen where I had shot from, and thus shot me back.

MR LAG is back with avengance :(, anything more than about 8 a side, and the game isnt playable at all with the modem. When I joined the server, there was about 6-8 players a side, and I came third after the game. Once the server filled up, my lag increased my score decreased :(

"Get a Cable Modem, or ADSL" I hear you all cry!!. if only I could :(, it aint about being able to afford it, they are simply not available in my area. So it looks like BF1942 will stay on the shelf until I have a lan party to go to...

You weren't the only one last night :( I decided to disconnect due to the lag and I am ADSL'd with nothing else coming down at the time.
Playing properly wasn't really possible and I would rather not play than play and not be able to play well/properly.
One of those things.
One of those days.

One thing tho, Skidmark's ping was helping to kill it I think last night. He was having huge patches where his ping was rated above 800:eek: when his ping did settle down, it helped me out certainly for one.

Cheers,

Nick :)

If you check the requirements on the bf1942 webby, it says minimum connection of 64k.

Unlucky....

i'm sure it also specifys that modem people should only try to join smaller servers (or similar).

I think you will find its only a very small amount of people with cable/adsl in this country anyway, probably only about 10%

We're now able to offer Multiplay 0845 dialup accounts, which dial straight into the local network the server is hosted on. It should give much better pings for modem and ISDN users.

Interested? Email me (wizzo@multiplay.co.uk). Oh did I mention it's free? :)

And what's wrong with logging out of vBB and logging in as yourself? Or are you having an identity crisis? Does masquerading as a woman help you overcome issues you have with your sexuality? Do you wish you were a woman? I think you need to book yourself a session with our resident psychiatrist and expert on all matters (homo)sexual, DrFaust.

From the overall population of the country, the number of people with broadband is alot less than 10% - however from the FPS gaming subset it's probably around 70% now and growing.

I have to disagree with you there Tsunami.

i have an internal LC chip modem, and even when the server is at full strength i still have a ping of about 110 sometimes lower than 100... it really depends on where u are etc (close to the exchange, how good your modem is, the isp, length of phone cable etc)...

But i even played on a 40 player server once.. and get this..

Came top!!!!!!!!!!!

lucky probs but all the same i had a good ping throughout!

i find its good some days and bad on other days.

I currently have a 56k modem and i manage to play ok with it. You just have to be 2 moves ahead sometimes :)

For emxample on 56k you cant use the sniperrifle or the engineers also pointless...

a friend of mine was wicked playing online with his 56k and then when he came to LANs it took him a while to readjust to the lack of lag.

There's an art to playing with a ping of 200. :D
