Ok i have had nearly all these problems. Its got nothing to do with DirectX at all
For those running nvidia graphics cards i have had the following problems:
Dumped back to desktop when i went to start it
Weird shapes appearing across my screen when i get to the menu screen in the game and also when i am playing
Laggy performance
and here is how i solved them all
Dumped back to desktop issue:
More than likely you are running detonator drivers with your card like i am and i still am. The issue with BF1942 is that it likes a refresh rate of 60hz at 800x600. If you can get the NVIDIA refresh rate fix then u need to install it and customise it so that 800x600 resolutions run in 60hz. Reboot your machine and run BF1942. It will run, if not then you have not done it correctly. Check that you have your monitor refresh rate at 60hz in your current resolution should u find that it crashes to desktop, this is because your card maybe defaulting to 1024x768 gfx for startup
Weird shapes
Ok, this was solved by clocking my GPU core speed up a tad and reducing the memory a bit. If you have clocked your card already, i am suspecting that the GF3/4 Ti users have clocked it up to be similar to that of the higher spec ones. If this is the case then reduce your memory clock a bit and those shapes will go. This is how i solved mine.
Laggy Performance
Reduce everything graphics wise to low performance, in all honesty u dont need it to be great looking to play it. The best contender for making it laggy was my soundcard as i stuck a cheap one in here coz at the time Creative were not going to support drivers and software for my old soundblaster live! coz it was the original original one, before it went to platinum. I have since changed it back for the SB Live! as creative have drivers for it and its made a big difference.
The other factor i found that made it better was clocking my CPU some more
These are my specs and BF1942 runs very very well indeed
AMD 1GHz (overclocked to 1406MHz)
512MB DDR Crucial Ram
Geforce 2 MX 400 (running at 219MHz Core speed and 180MHz memory speed, it ships at 180/166 respectively)
SB Live! (same card as the original platinum without the fancy 5.25" thing)
