Ok i have had nearly all these problems. Its got nothing to do with DirectX at all

For those running nvidia graphics cards i have had the following problems:

Dumped back to desktop when i went to start it

Weird shapes appearing across my screen when i get to the menu screen in the game and also when i am playing

Laggy performance

and here is how i solved them all

Dumped back to desktop issue:

More than likely you are running detonator drivers with your card like i am and i still am. The issue with BF1942 is that it likes a refresh rate of 60hz at 800x600. If you can get the NVIDIA refresh rate fix then u need to install it and customise it so that 800x600 resolutions run in 60hz. Reboot your machine and run BF1942. It will run, if not then you have not done it correctly. Check that you have your monitor refresh rate at 60hz in your current resolution should u find that it crashes to desktop, this is because your card maybe defaulting to 1024x768 gfx for startup

Weird shapes

Ok, this was solved by clocking my GPU core speed up a tad and reducing the memory a bit. If you have clocked your card already, i am suspecting that the GF3/4 Ti users have clocked it up to be similar to that of the higher spec ones. If this is the case then reduce your memory clock a bit and those shapes will go. This is how i solved mine.

Laggy Performance

Reduce everything graphics wise to low performance, in all honesty u dont need it to be great looking to play it. The best contender for making it laggy was my soundcard as i stuck a cheap one in here coz at the time Creative were not going to support drivers and software for my old soundblaster live! coz it was the original original one, before it went to platinum. I have since changed it back for the SB Live! as creative have drivers for it and its made a big difference.
The other factor i found that made it better was clocking my CPU some more

These are my specs and BF1942 runs very very well indeed

AMD 1GHz (overclocked to 1406MHz)

512MB DDR Crucial Ram

Geforce 2 MX 400 (running at 219MHz Core speed and 180MHz memory speed, it ships at 180/166 respectively)

SB Live! (same card as the original platinum without the fancy 5.25" thing)

mine hasnt faced any problems at all (just thought id rub it in)

my spec:

Pentium 4 1.8 (clocked 2002mhz)
512 PC2700 DDR
Geforce 3 Ti (clocked 300/500)
Yamaha APU70 Amplifier USB sound system!

maybe it athlon systems!

you just had to say the sound system even though it would have 0 effect on the graphics :)... show off :D

i STILL have the weird shapes, i have Ti4200 128mb, run it at default 250/446 and still have the shapes. Previously it was at 300/550 and thge shapes were there.

Any other ideas to get rid of the shapes?

u tried changind drivers?

atm I use 40.41 nvidias, but some people think that the last stable ones were 29.42's. It's a common thing with UT.. might be with other games too, that u might have to try 4-5 different nvidia drivers to get one that leaves u trouble free.

tell me now to take a screenshot and ill send it you lol

its worst on the opening screen of starting a game, where it tells you how long till game start and pick a spawn point, where you are kind of sat in the ditch looking at the water, with sand on with side

There is another key way of fixing the dumped straight back to desktop malarkey:

With the 1.1 patch applied.

Go into c:\program files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942 Multiplayer Demo\Settings (where the above is your default install location)and right click on VideoDefault.con. Open the file with notepad and you should be presented with the following:

rem * TEMP *
renderer.setFullScreen 1
renderer.fieldOfView 1
renderer.globalLodRadius 1
renderer.globalLodRadiusScaleFactor 5
console.showStats 0
renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0

Now change the bottom line value to 1

Set refreshforce or whatever you use back to your prefered gaming refresh rates if you have changed back, run the game and enjoy :)

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Nick :)
