My 1st impressions of BF1942 from a 56k'ers pov..
Firstly the game itself, basically its codename eagle 2. Its funny, before I started playing it, my friend kept telling me how brillant it was, and how you can do all this stuff (drive tanks/jeeps, fly planes/ shoot planes down), and i was like, so what?, you could do all that stuff in codename eagle. The more he described it the more I dreaded even thinking about installing it with all this stuff going on, my 'ittle ol' modem would never of coped... :(
How wrong was I??, this game quite simply "cheats pings". I played it last night from 7pm to 10.30pm, and only noticed "major lag" when on the aircraft carrier, and it was moving. Every now and then, I'd suffer "minor lag", an aircraft would jump in the sky, or a tank would disappear and re-appear somewhere else. That happened very occasionally, and never distracted from the overall enjoyment of the game.
So my average ping in BF1942 was 120, it seemed to occasionally peak at 160. To put that into some sorta context, my HL ping, is normally 170 to 240, my average Q3 ping is 250.
From what I've seen so far, im very impressed, this game has just jumped to the top of my "must have as so as it comes out" list. However, there is a BUT.. :(
My excellent ping (for a 56k'er) wasnt just down to the wonderful game code, the server I was playing on was also very good. Unfortantly MPUK isnt a GSP (yet) and so i'm left now wondering if I should risk buying the game?.
If I buy the game, and the MPUK server disappears, im going to have to use dodgy public servers, with the dodgy pings they offer. Basically the game wont be played...
But why would the MPUK server disappear I hear you all cry??
Lots of reasons, the main "threat" at the moment seems to be it becoming a "private" clan server. Another reason?, like I stated before, MPUK isnt a Game Service Provider. Another reason? bandwidth costs money, im sure running a server (or multiple servers) that are popular will cost money.
So really until I get broadband (soon apparently :p: ), im left in the same dillema, to buy or not to buy ??.. :(
